Sega Announces Phantasy Star Online 2 For PC

And then mentions little else about it.

Even though Sega neglected to bring the confetti, the kazoos, and the fireworks to the floor of Tokyo Game Show 2010, it's managed to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Phantasy Star Online in a radical and meaningful way. How, you ask? By announcing a brand installment in the long-running MMO-ish franchise called Phantasy Star Online 2. 

Details are lighter than air, despite the recent appearance of an official site, but it is known that PSO 2 will be a PC game set for release at some point in 2011.

Siliconera reports that Phantasy Star brain Satoshi Sakai is calling PSO 2 a "true successor," and more importantly, a "completely new work." And here I was thinking that Sega was just rereleasing a PSP classic under this game's name. Shucks.

As one poster said somewhere upthread, this may have been a regional thing. For my part, I owned every version of PSO (Dreamcast vanilla and 2.0, Xbox, Gamecube and Blue Burst) and can verify that they all had a $10 monthly fee here in NA. For whatever reason Sega's credit card processing system was very picky about debit cards so it was often very much up in the air as to whether or not your card would work for the game if it wasn't a dedeicated credit card and not just a Visa/Mastercard branded debit/ATM card. I also remember spending an awful lot of time with phone support working these issues out.

This is old school dreamcast and gamecube MMO.  I actually played the first and version 2 on dial up.  I even order the sammy/ascii keyboard controller to do the emotes and to type faster.  Im so buying this I love this series.  The title track played in the trailer made me weep.  I miss it.  Im down!!!!!

I remember racking up massive telephone bills during the original Dreamcast release. This was before ISPs were commonplace in the UK. 
 
Also, anyone else get one of their chracters NOL'd? It happed with my main and I remember being devastated at the time. So fucked up how many major exploits there were in that game...using Grants to KO others was pretty funny though!

I rememeber playing PSO on the Dreamcast constantly. All of these memories rushing back to me.

Considering GW2 seems to be offering a full MMO experience that even surpasses most others in almost every regard..  Being charged monthly for glorified CRPG's is pretty insulting.
But with PSU recently shut down, I think this is Sega's attempt to get back into the MMO field and get a steady income from those willing to blindly pay monthly for "server costs".
 
Otherwise I'd be all over this.
Even with all the glitches and exploits, the original PSO was a really great experience.

I'll bet good money that this thing winds up being a Monster Hunter clone. When it comes to online Japan doesn't know how to make anything else.

Tried it on the Xbox, the demo.  Read some reviews.  It was a horrid game 
& I don't know what anybody sees in it.

I played like a couple of weeks of Blue Burst, then stopped when it became Pay-to-Play. However, those few weeks were admittedly fun.
 
Never played the original PSO, but I'll give this one a shot.

If this is too much like the old PSO and they still try to charge a monthly fee then no thank you. I loved the first PSO, but no way in hell was I paying for a sub

Curious. Will it be a more hardcore version of PSO, or a more casual affair, like the original?
 
I hope it's casual, but I'm not willing to pay a sub for casual.

Ok. Well perhaps the PSO will be decent.  I'll hold out for the release/review
to see how it is.
