Sony Announces a New Model of PSP for Some Reason

New SKU retains for 99 Euros, has no Wi-Fi support.

If you're one of those staunchly stingy European types who out and out refuses to buy any new technology until it's gone through a minimum of four hardware revisions, has stripped out arguably its most useful feature, and dropped to a price that effectively says "seriously, just buy one of these goddamned things," then has Sony ever got a piece of news for you.

Like this, but cheaper, and less useful.
Like this, but cheaper, and less useful.

Inexplicably dropped as an addendum to Sony's PlayStation Vita portion of its Gamescom press conference, new Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head Jim Ryan chestily announced that a new piece of PSP hardware will be hitting stores in the near future. This new model will retail for 99 Euros (according to a statement from Sony, this model is only for Europe, with no American release planned), and will actually drop all wi-fi functionality from the hardware. Presumably, ad-hoc play will continue to exist, but any online connectivity will be dropped. Again, Sony has yet to specify the exact schematics of the device at this juncture.

So, there you go. Sit here and marvel at the fact that Sony pretty much just announced the PSP Go in reverse. Excitedly, even. Now excuse me, I have to return to deciphering why the hell there is a dance crew busting a move to wobble bassy electro tracks to ostensibly promote the PlayStation Move. It's just been that kind of press conference, people.

My original series PSP got a cracked screen a LONG time ago, so as crazy as this sounds I might think about picking this up.

If it's really just a 3000 model without Wi-Fi that wouldn't be a problem for me as I just want to catch up on a few PSP games I missed out on.

Anybody who calls the original PSP WiFi useful hasn't really played a PSP in a while.

I ordered a PSP3000 last week, which the mail company managed to lose, just like the previous thing I ordered. Eff you PostNL. But, postal rage aside, I ordered a PSP3000 and will soon be getting my money back.

I've actually been seriously considering this new, cheaper model. The new-PS3-like finish sounds great and other than WiFI, this model doesn't seem to be missing anything. I could live without WiFi. There's probably no worthwhile online functionality within most games and I don't care much about online gaming anyway. Downloading games would be a bit more of a pain, but I could download them on my PS3 and transfar them to the PSP. Browsing on the PSP only seems appealing until you realize it has no keyboard or battery life.

But then, there aren't really any details yet AFAICT. When is this thing coming out? How big will it be? How much on-board storage (if any)? Will it ship with a decent memory card? (Answer: No it won't.) What will the screen be like? This is clearly Sony scraping the bottom of the barrel for the cheapest parts and remove all non-essential functionality. Maximize the profit margin and push that crap on people who don't really know what they're buying. I have a feeling that I'll be much happier just getting a PSP3000. It's only €20 more and probably a superior product, even if you don't consider WiFI.

It's like some executive's nephew was on the hardware design team for Xperia PLAY, and they didn't want to completely throw out his work. Congrats kid.

I might buy this since my psp-2000 has been acting up lately. And I only used the wifi to look through the store every once in a while and then not buy anything. So I can do without that.

Still, weird move from Sony. Was definitely not expecting that.

this is stupid.... though i like the idea that they launched a system that required an internet connection to even get games and when that did work they responded with OH SHIT NO WIFI THEN. If you are downloading games you should be using the computer or ps3 anyways, but i guess a lot of kids wouldn't even notice if there was wifi or not.

Well I have never owned a PSP, I live in Europe and after six years there is a pretty decent catalouge of decent games.

This might finally push me to get a PSP. I have been thinking about picking one on the cheap for a while. Either that or I go the super cheap option of buying a used PSP off eBay.

My launch PSP battery is showing its age, and I have never used it for wi-fi, and I quite like the look of this, so pretty good news for me.

The no Wi-Fi thing sounds like a deal breaker, but I'm sure they have an audience that wants a cheaper PSP and don't have the want or the need for online connectivity.

Matte finish? Cheap? Sony, bring this to the states. Pretty please? Don't be dumb. We're in a recession here. I am finally on board with giving you money for your silly little handheld so I can get my Persona on.

...Anyone know if this thing's region-free?

I don't get the point.  We're months away from the launch of Vita.  Who cares about the PSP at this juncture.  The system's dead, Sony, deal with it.

Don't worry guys, I am sure it will be released in the U.S. eventually.

For the princely sum of $25. And yes, I am bitter about consistently inflated Eurozone prices.

I kind of wish this was coming to the US. I never bought a PSP, there are a few games for it I'd like to play, and what would I use the Wifi for anyway, other than downloading games?
Edit: You know, I just did a quick google search, and I think the PSP 3000 is actually cheaper here than this new thing will be in Europe.

I feel like this is just going to lead to brand confusion, the thing looks more like a Vita than any previous model of PSP. I do like the design of the thing though, shame it lacks one of the PSP's most useful features and is EU-only, might've been tricked into getting a matte PSP otherwise.

Precisely. Can't imagine why anyone would go near this thing. It wouldn't surprise me if SCEA decided against marketing and selling it, given they are trying to hype up interest in Vita. SCEE aren't quite as savvy it turns out.

I wouldn't want a PSP without wi-fi, but the matte finish and colored triggers are pretty slick. That's the best looking PSP to date IMO.

Maybe no Wi-Fi but a 3G subscription, hence the cheap name. Both would be crazy.

No wifi... That's weird. I mean, one minute they release the PSP Go which has no UMD's, so the only way to get games is via downloading them over wifi, the next they release a PSP with no internet connectivity whatsoever.

It seems to me like Sony are just using this as a last minute cash-in for the PSP. Reduce the cost of producing one to the absolute bare minimum, stick it out at a super low price and sell some units purely based on the strength of the PlayStation brand in Europe.

If you fire randomly in every direction enough times, statistically you'll HAVE to hit something.
