Sony Disputing Report Suggesting May 31 Deadline For PSN Restoration

No hard deadline for the return of Sony's online service.

UPDATE: Sony has informed us that Bloomberg's wording, which was the foundation of this story, is inaccurate and the May 31 "deadline" does not exist. There does not appear to be any hard deadline established, only to return services as Sony determines the appropriate security measures are in place.

Venture Beat first broke the dispute, which we separately confirmed with Sony. It's suspected the confusion may have come from this line in the recent press conference: "We are aiming to restore full services including PlayStation Store and purchasing features for Qriocity services within May 2011."

--

Hey, remember last week, when Sony said that it planned to get the ball rolling with restoring its PlayStation Network services starting last week? Right, just a quick reminder that it's not last week anymore. It's this week now. So, to be clear, last week came and went, and now this is this week, and yes your PSN services still aren't up. I know, I was confused, too. Just trust me on this one.

So, uh... how's that SOCOM single-player, eh?
So, uh... how's that SOCOM single-player, eh?
Now, on the subject of the PSN and when-ish you might actually be able to get back online, the answer currently is: "Dunno?"

As of this morning, Sony does not have a firm timetable for getting PSN all the way back online, and is currently only stating that everything should be restored by the end of this month. This info comes from company spokesman Shigenori Yoshida, who told Bloomberg this morning that the company is currently uncertain exactly when everything will return to a live state, and that Sony has set a deadline of May 31 for all services to be restored.

Last week's plan to restore partial services fell by the wayside when Sony decided it needed to finalize testing to make sure its newly constructed system was operating correctly. So, until we get another projected time line from Sony, all we can do is sit, wait, and wonder which other version of Splash Damage's multiplayer shooter, Brink, to pick up tomorrow.

Don't bother being reasonable with these people. They get pissed for them "not putting enough into security in the first place" but then when Sony is fixing the issue to the extent of it's ability, people get pissy. Their just going to listen to all the unconfirmed rumors flying around (which seriously, are getting kinda disgusting. So many places are just pretended to have information or putting up rumor after rumor that they probably started as if it was just news.) and act like Sony is the worst company in the world.

I'd love to see who these people blame when they get a virus or their facebook/email is hacked. It's always some one else's fault, right? It's not their fault for having crappy passwords, or for using limewire, or whatever other security risks they take, but when Sony has the same thing happen on a large scale, it's 100% their fault and they should be wiped off the face of the Earth for not having the most potent and impenetrable security system imaginable by man.

I'd say if it makes good games, it'll hopefully make for a good reboot of PSN.

Companies make mistakes, as long as they fix it and ensure it doesn't happen again that should be good enough.

Those hackers could have just as easily gotten into any other consoles online service, yet I've very rarely seen people actually blame the people responsible for it, the blames just put on sony, I'm not saying that they're not to blame but they're doing all that they can and are fixing the solution along with giving out free stuff.

So, if nothing else, Sony is probably going to do everything in it's power to get everything back up and running by E3. If they can't do that, the general mood around all Sony ventures is going to be even worse than it is right now.

@Branthog: I'm with you on Brink. I'm still considering the 360 version of LA Noire. I don't really care about disc changes. The only thing that would make me choose one over the other is if there are any major performance issues. Having access to pre-order bonuses on Xbox Live is nice though.

Multiple discs wouldn't bother me, if it weren't for the fact that it's effing stupid to require after I've already installed the damn game (which is why we have "big" 250gb drives in our consoles these days, right?). More importantly, three discs means triple the risk of something getting scratched or otherwise damaged and rendering the whole game unplayable some day. :)

Also, the whole extra "agent" thing on the PS3 version sounds interesting, so I figure what the hell.

Yeah there's been a lot of false reporting on this. This story and Game Informer are the only ones that have put it into the right perspective. "
The article on Gamasutra is perfectly fine, and the one on Ars Technica is factually accurate, if not a bit loaded. But why shouldn't it be? This is ridiculous! "
Oh of course, sir, it most certainly is. Whole situation is.I'm just a touch facepalming over some websites originally reporting the "end of may" comment by Sony last week as part of "PSN back online starting this week" and only just making it a big thing now because someone reminded them of it. "

So, is PSN the new Duke Nukem Forever?  It'll come back "when it's done?"

Seriously though, man this whole thing makes me feel real bad for SOCOM.  At least MK and Portal were released on other platforms whereas SOCOM just got completely screwed.

At this rate, I really just want fucking online multiplayer back.

The sad part is (and I'll admit this is me being overly cynical for the sake of being cyincal) that this is probably Sony's #1 concern right now.

The exclusive in the PS3 version wasn't much in RDR. It was an hideout, kill a couple guys, get in the wagon and drive it back to Armadillo while more attackers come after you. Still it's better then nothing.

In any case, only one disc, an exclusive case, trophies will always sync later if PSN is still not back by then and DLC and pre order bonuses can always be acquired later, and especially the pre order crap which really only a tiny fraction of those you will play the game will have anyway. I think PS3 version is still the way to go since there's no immediate need for online stuff in a single player only games. People putting L.A. Noire in the same category as Brink are just overreacting.

@UnsolvedParadox:

SOE is still down and it's been a full week since they took down the servers. At least with PSN they're giving some type of estimated date of return. SOE seems tight lipped about when it'll return with the last update being the middle of last week saying the servers will be back up friday at the earliest.

but judging from GTA IV and RDR it'll have the downside of inferior framerate and visuals.

...though apparently it uses a different engine but it still looks a lot like RAGE so the above could still hold true.

I'm definitely going PS3 for it though, I got Dead Space 2 on 360 and sort of underestimated how annoying disc swapping is. I never thought I'd replay it the amount of times I did.

Maximum laziness.

I'm assuming most of them just wrote that off as a two day outage due to an unexpected amount of traffic.

I suppose some people would consider that the same as the system being shutdown for over a month and leaking personal information but you know, people set their own limits I guess.

Dude, they've lied about stuff pertaining to Playstation for years.
And I mean, not in a cagey way like most businesses do. They just plain pull stuff out of their ass.
Ever since they showed off the so-called real time sequences of the dancehall scene in Final Fantasy VIII running on a PS2 to steal the Dreamcast's thunder, I haven't believed anything from their press conferences.
I trust Kaz Hirai, Jack Tretton and the now gone Ken Kutaragi even less than Gamespot.

@Pr1mus:  That outage was maybe a week, though I think a bit shorter. This offline spell has already lasted longer, has the potential for credit card or identity theft, and there's still no end in sight.

So, you know, if you're going to try and make that comparison, might want to think about some key differences first.

I'm not an idiot, i know the gravity of stolen info, but the harm is done, the best one can do, which i did is change all password which were the same, change Credit Card number etc, this took 10mins. Once that is taken care of which everyone should have done already if they are the least bit worried about that, all there's left to do is wait for the service to come back.

Now swapping console, friends to play with and turning away from Infamous, uncharted, god of war, and Killzone isn't exactly the brightest idea in the world.

Like i said the harm is done. And changing console now isn't gonna fix this. So might as well wait, and continue playing those awesome games.

@Pr1mus: The immediate need for access to the DLC content for me is that I plan on playing this game on the 17th and I rarely ever play games more than once, as I just don't have time. With the amount of bonuses I'm getting with my Gamestop pre-order I definately want them as soon as possible. Gamestop is offering an additional case file, a Thompson Machine Gun, and some sort of collectible badge quest that unlocks a suit. That is content that I'll most likely never see if I can't access it before I finish the game. Also, I read that the 360 version is going to have some sort of tracker that shows you statistics on what decisions people make during investigations and the like. Not that the last feature is a deal breaker, but it is interesting. At this point I think the only thing that would make me switch my pre-order over to PS3 is if the 360 had some major performance issues or that one extra case somehow mattered more than shooting a few dudes and stealing their wagon.

This PSN outage has been upgraded from rub it in for a laugh to actual pity for PSN users.

I stick with xbox live over my ps3 because that is where my friends are, however if you're one of the unlucky folks to have all their friends on PSN and cant play anything online i do feel sorry for you.

@N7: That's cool. The article I read made it sound otherwise. Thought it seemed odd.

@dezvous: Short answer is: Yes. I'm just baller that way.
Long answer: I find your assessment of my habits in regards to my hobby ridiculous and a little judgmental. They may not seem prudent to your standards, but I play a lot of games and have a career that demands a good deal of my time. Besides, most games don't have enough to offer more than one play through. Once I know the story I have little interest in going through it again. My time is of more value to me than $60.

I can't believe how long PSN has been down for now. I know it's stopped me from playing Portal 2 Co-Op with a friend of mine who owns the PS3 version. He's moved on to playing Mortal Kombat in single player, spending his days pretending the AI are real people.

You and your friend should get out and spend some couch co-op time at each other's place "

I moved away from my friend to go to UC Berkeley, so that's quite impossible at the moment, then again, so is PSN.

" This PSN outage has been upgraded from rub it in for a laugh to actual pity for PSN users.

I stick with xbox live over my ps3 because that is where my friends are, however if you're one of the unlucky folks to have all their friends on PSN and cant play anything online i do feel sorry for you.

Glad to see people that think brand loyalty is a dumb part of gaming and feel for fellow frustrations. I would be pissed about PSN more if I didn't own a gaming PC, but Steam is pretty much good enough right now. Sure would like to play MK online though.
