Owners to have access to a lineup of original PlayStation games later this year.

Soon, you'll have the ability to download original PlayStation games on a Sony-branded tablet. No, I'm not sure anyone was asking for complicated controller-based games to be mapped to a touch screen, but my own snark aside, Sony revealed the first PlayStation Certified tablet at an event in Japan tonight.
Ridge Racer advocate and PlayStation lead executive Kaz Hirai was on-hand to help unveil Sony's devices. There are actually two tablets coming from Sony sometime in fall 2011, S1 and S2. Both have tentative codenames, with the former designed for home use ("rich media entertainment," says the press release), the other meant for on-the-go experiences ("mobile communication and entertainment").

It's not common for tablets to have split-screens. == TEASER ==The press release doesn't provide any indication of the lineup of original PlayStation games, only mentioning consumers will have access to "high quality first generation PlayStation titles," but games like Crash Bandicoot have already launched on other PlayStation Certified phones featuring Android.
Based on Google's Android 3.0 operating system, Sony's S1 features a 9.4-inch display, while the S2 sports two 5.5-inch displays. Both can grab onto local Wi-Fi points and access 3G and 4G networks.
No pricing information is available yet for either tablet.
I'm still trying to figure out how original PlayStation games would be any fun with touch, though.
I agree with xXDiabloFanXx Sony needs to get their stuff up and running before they loose more people. But hey that's what the guys who hacked them wanted.
Yes Sony, please do offer us old PS1 games that look apalling by today's portable standards and please let us also play these with the ultimate control mechanism; the touch screen.
I don't want to play PS1 games on a tablet, I just want a fast and powerful OS with a lot of web support in my tablet. I think how Sony is releasing old PS1 games on so many new devices they're selling is kind of dumb... games don't need to be integrated into EVERYTHING
Pretty sure everyone who wants PS1 games has them emulated somehow for free. Console games on mobile devices always seem clunky and extra difficult when you're forced to use touch screen controls (PS3 controller compatibility would be nice.) The only success I see in this for Sony is the Final Fantasy series, and even that might be dried up by now. RPG's from that generation are menu driven and don't require button mashing like some in the recent generations.
Great coverage... as for the tablet, no thank you. PS1 looks and controls bad even with on a regular system (Don't get me wrong, I used to love those games but... c'mon)
I remember those dark days before the PS1 had analog sticks, and the button configuration on that tablet looks ridiculous. Sony's trying to belatedly get into the mobile market with the playstation phone and this, but they should really be focusing their energies in avoiding the mistakes of the PSP with the new handheld.
Or I could get an NGP, have buttons, not be subjected to whatever crazy tablet price tag these will have, and be able to play games with actual, gosh-darn buttons.

The only people Sony will lose are those with no understanding of why it went down or those who were on the verge of leaving anyway and just needed one random excuse or another. I say let 'em go.
When will developers realise that on screen buttons are horse shit. Who wants to play a game when your fingers are constantly sliding off the on screen keys and causing chaos!
Tablet is fair enough, but marketing it to gamers is stupid, I've never met anyone who 'likes' touch keys.
Games these days are too easy; not only that, but games in the 90's were too easy as well. Those buttons were so easy to identify without looking at them, and you knew when you weren't touching one because of the feel. It's important that people learn to play games without such hand-holding devices such as physical buttons, and embrace rubbing their greasy fingers over screens; the way games were meant to be played.
is it just me or does this look just like a desperate attempt to get into every niche of the market? Seriously, who will buy this as their primary handheld?
Ok I'm pretty sure the sites going down was actually so they could completely redesign the back end stuff to handle Patrick's speed. This isn't idle fact, its cold hard speculation.
Stupid move on Sony's part. I don't even own a IPad, why on earth do they honestly think I'd buy one just to play PS1 games that I could play on a PS3/2/1 with a real controller? I have less then 0% interest in this thing, I think it'll fail pretty hard pretty fast.
@PatrickKlepek We already know our current PSN PS1 purchases won't transfer to Playstation certified phones. Any news on if these tablets fall into the same bull shit? Am I gonna have to repurchase my games to get them on the tablet? Are the tablet purchases at least transferable to the phones?
