Sony's E3 2012 Press Conference: A Bloody, Post-Apocalyptic Quantic Fever Dream

Light on Vita stuff but heavy on big PS3 titles, Sony makes it abundantly clear where they're headed.

After Microsoft's relatively tepid showing this morning, Sony didn't need to do a lot to "beat" Microsoft--at least insomuch as you can "beat" anybody at putting on press conferences. But that didn't stop Sony from putting on a strong showing that put a hyperfocus on games. Big ones, in fact.

The show opened with a surprise showing in Beyond, the latest game from Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream. Studio head David Cage arrived on the scene to deliver a lot of heady talk about games exploring the concept of death and existence beyond it. What that translated to was a seemingly gameplay-free demo that featured a cop talking to a bald woman. I suppose it's worth mentioning that said bald woman was played by Ellen Page. Oh, and that she seems to have telekinetic powers.

What lies Beyond? Juno does.
What lies Beyond? Juno does.

Most of the demo revolved around the cop talking at Page's character, who refused to speak or answer questions. At one point, the cop sets down a coffee cup on his desk, and in an unexplained moment of weirdness, Paige seemingly makes the cup fly off the desk and into a wall. The cop, appropriately, backs away slowly.

This leads to an apparent stand-off with a mysterious S.W.A.T. force that appears to be aware of the girl's existence and is summarily cautious of her powers. That plot thread, however, is never tied up. Instead, the demo video cut to a montage featuring more scenes of action and dialogue with Paige, who also seems to be connected to some kind of mysterious entity known as Aiden. So it's weird, it's cinematic, and heavy on befuddling dialogue. Sounds like a Quantic Dream game to me.

From there, we then moved on to the totally thematically consistent PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale. Not a lot of surprises there. Battle was shown between a quartet of characters (Kratos, Sly Cooper, Fat Princess, and Sweet Tooth) that, yeah, did look an awful lot like Smash Bros. Look, I don't want to knock a game for looking similar to another game, since making games that look like other games is pretty much the guiding ethos of the entire game industry. And, for what it's worth, the combat looked like it had some merit to it, in that over-the-top Smash Bros. way.

This led to a number of product announcements from Sony man Jack Tretton, including the revelations that PlayStation Plus would be getting a gang of free games in the coming year, and that PSOne games would be headed to Vita in the near future. Interestingly, beyond this and the announcement of cross-platform play for PS All-Stars on the Vita (yes, it's definitely coming to the handheld), the Vita was largely absent from the proceedings.

Granted, a couple of big games were announced. Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified was confirmed for the platform (though nothing was shown), and Ubisoft did reveal its new Assassin's Creed III spinoff for the system. Subtitled Liberation, this new AC features a female assassin (who I'm pretty sure is a pirate of some fashion) and is set in New Orleans in the years leading up to the American Revolution. However, beyond these two titles, Sony mostly seemed focused on PS3 and Network stuff, which is interesting, considering the recent struggles of the Vita.

Ubisoft didn't just show Liberation at the show. They also showed an additional demo of AC III, which featured a bizarre, yet cool-looking naval sequence, in which you find yourself steering a boat in the middle of a naval combat scenario. Some people seemed confused and thought this was a Liberation demo, but no, it was definitely AC III. Additionally, Ubi showed off a new four-player co-op mode for Far Cry 3 that looked...interesting? It was hard to tell based on the footage shown, but it could certainly be a cool addition. Less boobs in that demo, in case you were wondering.

I don't know that I can appropriately emphasize just how goofy this Wonderbooks stuff looked.
I don't know that I can appropriately emphasize just how goofy this Wonderbooks stuff looked.

Following the Ubi segments, the show got...weird. It was clear from the moment PlayStation Move was mentioned that we were probably in for something totally kooky, but I don't think anyone expected Wonderbooks.

That's right, Wonderbooks! They're books! Full of wonder! And by wonder, I mean AR codes.

Yes, Wonderbooks are books that use the PS3's augmented reality tech to create wondrous interactive images using the PlayStation Eye. The big get for this segment was the revelation that J.K. Rowling was working in conjunction with Sony to create Book of Spells, a Wonderbook based on the same stuff found on the Pottermore website. Interestingly, the demonstrators went to great pains to avoid mentioning Harry Potter by name, though the obvious wizarding connections are obvious once you see the thing in action.

Trouble is, seeing it in action doesn't necessarily explain what the hell is going on with this thing. The decision to cut between three different people playing the same game didn't do much for demo coherence, but the AR stuff just seemed bizarre. Also, I hate to nitpick, but when something is called a "book," I tend to presume that there are words in it. This doesn't really appear to be the case here.

After a very lengthy demonstration featuring people who looked like they'd been hanging around an opium den all day, the conference finally moved back to major game stuff. Namely, two of the biggest upcoming exclusives for the platform: God of War: Ascension, and The Last of Us.

Look, I'm as big of a fan of God of War as there is, but even I have to admit that the idea of yet another Kratos-brand vengeance bender seemed...unnecessary? I can't say that the Ascension demo did much to sway my feelings on its superfluousness, but hey, it sure did look pretty. Unsurprisingly, the demo was replete with gory attacks, ugly monsters (chief among them, creatures of the goat and elephant variety), and Kratos generally looking displeased with everything. The one new wrinkle shown was some manner of time-shifting craziness. Kratos has a bracelet that seemingly rewinds time, or at least restores destroyed scenery. Little context beyond the rebuilding of an obliterated dock was given, but hey, at least it's something outside of the usual square, square, triangle stabbery.

And then there is The Last of Us. My immediate instinct with this game is to try and find fault with it, mostly because I've been burned by so many games that excited the hell out of me over the years. But I can't do it. Watching the reps from Naughty Dog play through this thing, I got giddy. Straight. Up. Giddy.

I don't know that I've seen a game make hand-to-hand combat look insanely painful better than The Last of Us.
I don't know that I've seen a game make hand-to-hand combat look insanely painful better than The Last of Us.

The demo itself featured game protagonists Ellie and Joel exploring a water-logged part of the city. Evidently having just escaped a brush with some bad guys, they suddenly find themselves brushing with more bad guys, who are exploring an abandoned building they're hiding near. Joel immediately leaps into action, sneaking behind one guy and Brutus The Barber Beefcake-ing him into submission, followed by a protracted battle with the remaining bad guys.

I don't want to be that guy who champions horrible, grotesque violence, but this is my thing: violence in games is often numbing because it feels sort of consequence-less. You're just running around and your character is barely reacting to getting shot or getting hit. Enemies make these corny death animations that barely seem real. I don't know what hoodoo is going on under the hood in The Last of Us, but at the very least, Naughty Dog has found a way to make violence feel brutal. When anyone gets punched, kicked, or hit with an object in this game, I cringe in sympathetic pain. When Joel gets shot, he gets majorly knocked back. Yes, he can take multiple bullets, but shut up. Video games.

The question, of course, is how is The Last of Us going to play? No idea, and my understanding is that Naughty Dog won't be giving hands-on demos at this show. I'll be sure to stare at the controller the demoer is holding extra hard when I have my appointment with the game this week.

All in all, a relatively strong showing from Sony. They didn't show a lot of games, but the ones they did were almost all bangers. You can harp on the Wonderbooks stuff all you like--or, do as I'm doing and dismiss it altogether--but the games at least ranged from fantastic-looking to intriguing. And while some might be disappointed that Sony said nothing of its eventual next-gen console (supposedly codenamed "Orbis"), it's hard to be too mad when there are real life games that I want to be playing on the console I already have.

Random Thoughts:

  • There was a part of me that believed that Sony would mention something about Orbis, just to seem way more ahead of the game after Microsoft opted to skip mentioning anything. No dice, it seems. Again, not complaining.
  • I could listen to Andrew House pronounce the word "innovative" for the rest of time. It's an inspired pronunciation.
  • There were a number of PlayStation Blog readers in the audience of tonight's conference, which explains why people were hooting and hollering after every other sentence.
  • I do not care for the idea of a Big Daddy as a PlayStation All-Stars character. Not because I don't think he'll play well. I just don't associate the BioShock franchise with PlayStation, really. I mean, those versions of the game weren't exactly top flight, remember?
  • Jack Tretton's call out of Kaz Hirai actually felt like a genuinely sweet moment. Glad to see that running the rest of Sony hasn't erased Kaz's ability to show up and promote some games.
  • Was really betting on some kind of Syphon Filter announcement. No dice.

Tomorrow, we check out Nintendo, and then it's E3 show floor time. Prepare yourselves accordingly.

Am I the only person who just felt that The Last Of Us just looked like I Am Alive in Uncharted's engine then?

@Brodehouse: I've never found God of War's puzzles particularly outstanding, or even mildly interesting. They're usually incredibly easy, with little to no imagination put into them.

I think I just noticed that you play as a second character in AC3, here's the picture.

Sorry it's distorted, it's a PrtScn picture.

No Caption Provided

The guy with the Captain's hat on, He's definitely not the Native American that you see in the other AC3 videos.

@Orange_Pork: They said they were thinking of including a demo for it in the HD collection, so I'm still holding a flame for that game. I wonder if I preorder The Last Guardian and Amazon is wrong about the release date would they give me some sort of credit? http://www.amazon.com/The-Last-Guardian-Playstation-3/dp/B002BSA18K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338897213&sr=8-1

@melting_window: That game's vaporware at this point. It's been three years and there hasn't been any news since its announcement trailer. I'm kind of thinking about setting up a betting pool on which game gets announced as canceled first: Last Guardian, Beyond Good & Evil 2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Ryse, or Brothers in Arms Furious Four.

I think gamers need to raise their expectations out of what they think a game should be, as the Tomb Raider demo is the only thing so far that just my juices pumping. Fingers crossed Nintendo can deliver the goods as I think Sony and Microsoft are both headed in the wrong direction.

They couldn't even show 2 minutes from The Last Guardian? Come on. I know the development is going slowly since most of the team left but they couldn't make a decent trailer? I haven't bought a PS3 game in a year and I would preorder The Last Guardian.

Honestly I thought that Sonys conference was just as bad as Microsofts. Barely anything was new and what was didn't blow me away. Beyond looks goofy as hell and their smash bros clone looked awful.

Ubisoft was far and away the best conference for me. Far Cry 3, Watch_Dogs and Rayman looked incredible.

I don't get the hype for The Last of Us, seemed very scripted and like Uncharted if set in a barren world. Will have to see more but first impressions are that it's another shooter with melee and stealth.

I'm not really sold on Last of Us. While it seems cool and all I just get the impression that it's gonna be too much like a stealth game where you either do it right or you reload, which totally goes against the mood and immersion factor. But then again if it's not, it's gonna break the survivability immersion instead. It just seems like a "rock and hard place" situation.

Gotta give Sony a lot of credit. At least they seem to care more about giving me games rather than a bunch of shit that I didn't ask for, never wanted, and will not use. Too bad Microsoft can't say the same. Maybe I'll have a reason to finally fire up the PS3 up soon.

I had a lot of different thoughts as I browsed the comments & have come up with this: Those who claim that the Vita is dead or needs more support is wrong. The correct phrase is, "The Vita should never have been attempted."

I liked the last of us and beyond however I just didn't feel the innovation in Sony so that was it's weakness. Also I am excited now for Halo 4, Black Ops 2 and Blacklist, however for me I feel Microsoft were not showing a lot of games more specifically exclusives so that was it's weakness. Overall in my scale they are the same in conferences but I didn't see nintendo so I am going to see that in action tomorrow.

Cool, I didn't see any of G4's coverage. Good point about Cage though, frankly I'll be surprised and a bit disappointed if it is a straight up action game.

True, but why couldn't all that stuff be in the main conference? Especially considering the Vita's a new console that's in dire need of some strong support.

I can't pick into the brain of Sony, but there are definitely some more stuff coming. People -there- are seeing them. Tomorrow and over the next few days you'll be getting plenty of trailers and new info. Why Sony wouldn't talk about it? Well, why does Sony do anything? They aren't exactly known for their great decision-making; they just make good stuff. We'll be seeing some interesting things from them this week. Hang in there.

I'm not sure wether the Sony or Ubisoft conference was stronger, but I guess Sony wins for way less awkward moments.

I think Assassin's Creed III continues to look phenomenal and the naval sequence really got me thinking about the scope of that game. The trailer they showed of Assassin's Creed III: Liberation looked quite good, I mean the detail and scope are both a step down from the craziness happening in the big game but I thought it looked promising for Vita. At the very least the parkouring and crowds look worlds better than AC: Bloodlines.

Disappointed they didn't show any of CoD:Black Ops Vita, has me a bit worried, but the fact that it is a different game could be a good thing, assuming that game is given the resources it needs. I generally share the same concern with Alex about Vita and it looks like a general drought of new significant Vita games will continue, which about mirrors this point in the PSP's lifecycle, but it seems a tad better than that.

At the very least Beyond is very good looking game. Alex's tweet about ghost sex months ago might actually come true. I find it a little weird that you get an actress like Ellen Page to stare into space and act mute but I'm assuming there is a bit more room for her character to breath throughout the rest of the game. It will be interesting to see how much David Cage has evolved as a writer.

GoW: Ascension looks solid but not exactly inspired. Nice to see some gameplay from The Last of Us, that looks great. I like the bit where Joel sneaks up behind a guy to do a Nathan Drake-stye stealth kill but instead of a quick neck snap the kill animation is a long prolonged tense choking sequence. Some of the scripting seems a bit too good to be very dynamic, like picking up the shotgun, being rushed by the dude, fighting him off, Ellie stabbing him in the back and then picking up the shotgun again after the struggle. But I'm hoping its a case where they have set up a bunch of combat sequence scripts that can trigger depending on the situation.

No, that's called an opinion. Also, I think you're selling Last of Us short, or don't you really get what they're going for. Nothing about that game indicates "just another zombie survival game".

What evidence do you have that Beyond will be an action adventure game? Has some gameplay footage been released or something? Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain would indicate it's not going to be that at all.

Either way, I really want to see more of both games, they should both be fantastic.

Thanks Alex. Video Games. People seem to forget when they bitch about realism. I only want my game to have so much realism but still be fun and not die with one bullet cause real life sucks! Even that would be an interesting game all in its own, hello Arma DayZ, but with The Last of Us and Tomb Raider I'm pretty excited about whats coming up.

@chriscalla: You didn't miss much; Conviction sucked.

So yeah, the Vita's fucked, huh? This is the time Sony really had to come out swinging and show that they and other people were behind the system, and they couldn't even be bothered. It's never going to take off because they're doing everything in their power to stunt it's growth. Why would you fucking spend all this money to release this stupid handheld and then just not support it? What are you idiots thinking?!

But man, The Last of Us, huh? Fuckin' A! That, Watch Dogs and AC3 have made this first day somewhat bearable.

Maybe it is the fact that Sony showed more on-stage demos, or that they arent focusing as much on the social aspect of the platform but more on the gaming aspect. Please dont read this as I am upset or anything because I really dont care who had a better conference. I am just interested about why people think one is better than the other.

I sort of agree on this. I know that sony showed more on the games and microsoft showed more of the entertainment aspect of this. Keep in min even though this is a video game convention, it doesn't mean that new innovations can happen at E3. Even though Sony showed more games, I feel that Sony should also raise the bar a little higher. For Microsoft, I wanted to see more first party games than innovative things like smartglass, I wish that E3 is just E3 and even though press conferences are a battle on who is going to win at E3, it doesn't mean that it will translate in the long run like this coming Fall or in 2013. Again tangents can happen and they might happen after E3 just saying/

I think people who reduce God of War down to the combat are the ones who have never played it.  God of War actually features some of the coolest puzzles out there, but since they take place in a game with a very angry man, they don't get as much credit than if they were in a whimsical adventure.

If all God of War was at its heart was square square triangle, then it would be Dante's Inferno.  And it's easily not.

(This is coming from a guy who only played the first and third Gods of War, and doesn't really have any interest to play more)

I'm actually super pumped for Beyond, despite not having played more of Heavy Rain than the demo. And, conversely, despite loving the shit out of the Jak trilogy and Uncharted 2 and 3, I could not give a fuck about Last of Us.

I mean, Beyond looks cool. Psychic powers (or actually Alex, I believe Ellen Paige is followed by a ghost character. That Aiden she mentioned) and a general more action packed premise make me excited. Doing a boring, grounded, gritty murder thriller is not the most exciting video game premise, which is why I sat out Heavy Rain. But putting me in an action adventure with super powers? And incorporating Heavy Rain's storytelling/game mechanic wizardry? I'm totally for that!

But Last of Us? First off, it takes place in Pittsburgh. I hate Pittsburgh, but mostly because of the idiotic morons who live there and bleed Steelers. So actually, I kinda like seeing the place destroyed:) Mostly though, it's just another zombie game. So disappointed by that. It also looks like it screws up the delicate balance Uncharted 2 hit between cinematics and playability. A line they already stumbled a bit with Uncharted 3. But this one seems to brush playability aside even more than the occasional screwups in Uncharted 3 (like, say, having procedural animation take precedence over hitting buttons. I really don't care about Nate playing a "I jumped into a wall" animation - I wanted to jump through that window, Naughty Dog). Just make a fucking movie at this point.

These two studios seem to be approaching the same problem from different angles. Naughty Dog used to be all about gameplay, and have been injecting more story into every one of their games. Whereas Quantic Dream was more about story than gameplay back in the Omikron days, and have been trying to inject more gameplay into their stories. I feel like, right now, Quantic Dream's game has hit the right balance. And Naughty Dog's has whiffed it.

And you really can't underestimate: Renegade girls with ghost powers being hunted by cops is FAR MORE INTERESTING than zombie survival game no.4,297. Anyway you look at it, that's a fact.

But whatever. Great press conference all around, Sony. All these games will be great. Just varying degrees of greatness.

Yeh, the Wonderbook shit should've just been a 1 minute demo with a JK Rowling namedrop, then use the rest of the...what...15 minutes to show Ni No Kuni, LBP Karting, P4 Golden and Soul Sacrifice.

Whoever approved that was off their rocker.

Being pretty much bored and unsuprised by any of the shows but Last of Us pretty much _blew_ my mind. Breathtaking!
