Spore: My Time in the Gene Pool

We take a look at the early hours of Spore ahead of its full retail release.

You'll start the game by swimming around and eating stuff to gain size and abilities.
You'll start the game by swimming around and eating stuff to gain size and abilities.
One of the many dangers that comes with taking a long time to develop a game is that the story of the game's development becomes more interesting than the game itself. Spore first came to light way back in 2005 and would probably make for an exciting tale of ambition and huge budgets. But it's a bit easier to forget the long road Spore has taken to stores now that I have a copy of it for myself. While Brad is currently playing it in much more depth for our review, I finally got around to playing a couple hours of it last night. It seems fun almost immediately, but so far I'm a little startled by what Spore is and how Spore works.

The game starts out simply enough at the cellular level. You pick a planet, name it, decide if you want to be a carnivore or an herbivore, and then watch as a meteor crashes into the planet. Life springs forth from the meteor in the form of you--a cellular organism.

The first stage is mostly about clicking on meteor chunks to eat them. This fills a bar at the bottom of the screen. As you eat, you also grow bigger, and a Katamari Damacy-like change in the scale of the world occurs every time you go up a size. If you're a meat-eater, you can also attack and eat other creatures, some of which have unlockable parts that you can use. At any time, you can sound a mating call to go into the editor, which is effectively the Creature Creator in full-game form. You can spend your DNA points to slap on additional items, such as spiked horns to defend against incoming attackers, flagella for extra propulsion, and so on. You can also remove items and sell them back at the same cost you paid--this means you're able to mess around as much as you want with all the different parts with no penalty. You can also die without fear, as you'll just reappear as another member of your species.

Over the course of the cellular stage, my carnivore got a pair of spikes, an electrical charge that shocks nearby opponents, and a jet-like propulsion system. But after 30 minutes or so, it was time to rise up out of the ooze and take to the land. You can stick around in the cellular stage for as long as you like, but once you've reached a certain size and filled the DNA meter at the bottom of the screen, you stop earning more currency to further customize your creature.

The second stage is the land stage, so the first thing I did was slap some legs on my guy. Like the previous stage, you can hit the mating call button at any time to drop into the editor and mess around. But the gameplay here is pretty different. You start out in a nest full of your species. There are other species roaming around their own nests, and it's up to you to explore. As a carnivore, I explored by fighting and eating many of the other creatures. If you go in and clear out a few creatures, you'll make the entire species extinct.

In Phase 2 you'll take on other creatures to become a dominant species.
In Phase 2 you'll take on other creatures to become a dominant species.
The fighting itself has an MMORPG-like quality to it in that you're mostly using hotkeys. Depending on which parts are on your creature, you may have a basic strike attack, a bite, or something a little more complex, like a charge that rushes faraway foes and stuns them. Each attack is mapped to a number key on the keyboard, and each one has a different cooldown time. It's pretty simple.

But it isn't all violence. You can switch out of your aggressive stance and into a social one, which lets you get close and attempt to impress other species. If you impress a set number of creatures, that species will become one of your allies. So far, the only thing I've needed to do to impress other creatures is to sing with them. Eventually you encounter better singers, so you'll probably need to team up with your allies for a full-on group session. As you fill the DNA bar in this stage, your brain gets bigger and you eventually gain the ability to recruit allies. They'll follow you around and help out with fights and singing.

That's about as far as much as I've seen so far. The DNA bar for this stage is around halfway full, so there's still more to see before moving on. The thing that really surprises me, though, is the game's approach to evolution. I sort of figured that my creature would change in accordance with my play style, so if I decided to fight a lot, I'd eventually get a meaner, tougher, battle-tested creature. Or if I decided to be really friendly, maybe I'd end up becoming an herbivore or something. Instead, I chose carnivore very early in the game, and now if I run up and click on a tree, the game says that, as a carnivore, I shouldn't be eating plants.

You get to dictate every aspect of your creature manually, yet you also seem to get locked into some of your early choices. Not to get into some kind of ridiculous debate here, but that's way more intelligent design that I expected. It's definitely interesting enough to keep me going, though. We'll have a full review next week.

I got to go to a talk from the man himself on Spore, and it just seem to be a game that has so much variety in the way you do things as well as what you do. Luckily I live in the UK and get my hands on my copy tomorrow. Nice bog Jeff!

I'm at the same stage than Jeff, and honestly hope it gets better down the road. Right now I'm really disapointed. Apart from the creature creation, there is not much to it.
Still looking forward to see the other stages.

argh, bring more Spore content, can't wait for Sunday so for the meantime i've been (re)viewing all the content I possibly can on it (Spore).

VERY nice (brief) coverage on it, just those few paragraphs answered several questions that were developing in my skull.

also anxiously awaiting Brad's in-depth review (hopefully with a video review)... not that a review's going to alter my already purchased pre-order for the Galactic Edition  :)

I'd like to point out that it is possible to go from carnivore, to herbivore and back, but it does require you to throw on both types of mouths at the cellular stage and to keep at least one set of those so that you may get more herbivore mouths. On top of that, being more social to creatures they just outright wiping them out helps a great deal in gaining access to the other types of mouths as well.

Jeff, next time, try and change the mouth on your creature from carnivore to a herbivore one. This way, your creature can eat plants instead of meat.

You can also equip both mouths if you have enough DNA points, so you become an omnivore. Or you can just slap an omnivore mouth on your beast, if you have one in the creator.
You can track the evolution of your creature from the history panel (bottom right button, next to the evolution bar) and see if you're more carnivore or herbivore according to your eating habits. In the creature stage, your way of interaction dictates if you'll end up as a friendly race or a belligerous one.
So, in the end, your not THAT tied to specific choices you make in the early stages.
And besides, you can start a planet (i.e: game) from any stage, once you unlock it. So if you just want a friendly herbivore creature to play with, just create in the creator and play from the tribe stage.

That fate aspect has me worried.  I got a similar vibe when they were talking about the "friend" path and the "conquering" path in the planet mode.  I guess you could consider this as an equivalent of choosing a class or a character.  It increases replayability because you'll have definite paths to follow.  It's not an evolution simulator, really.

I wonder if you can BLEND approaches, though.  Omnivore?  Peace and War?  I guess we'll find out.  Hard to believe this game is finally coming out!  Looking forward to seeing its impact.

Apparently the game only takes about 8 hours to complete and there is a definite completion/ending point. Game trailers were saying each stage of evolution is more or a less a mini game and as soon as you get to grips with that game you are sent into the next stage. They sounded very disappointed in it and I feel disappointed too. It's not the sprawling epic everyone was expecting.

Sometimes it better if the player makes a clear choice rather than a hidden one that some developer thought made sense during the creation of the game.

Tribe stage is by far the worst for me.

It's way too stripped down: no unit types, no production queue, no units grouping...
You just tell your main building to build "eggs". Those give birth to a newborn creature of your tribe and you have to wait a couple of minute to fully grow and be useful. Then you have only ONE unit type. You can tell it do do anything, and its combat get better if you build "weapon buildings" and tell the unit to equip weapon. That is, if you want to fight and destroy other tribes. You can also go play pacifism and build "instruments buildings" ad equip instruments on your units. You then go to an opposing tribe and fascinate it using your instruments (in a similar way to the social approach in the creature stage: you have to mimic what the other tribe is doing, by playing the right instrument).
That it.  There's nothing more to it. You can fascinate tribes or destroy them. But to destroy them you have to fully equip your tribe with weapons and go on an all-out attack, hoping for the best. There's some strategy to it since you can use lances to attack from afar and torches to burn buildings, but since you start with only a certani type of weapon building based on your behaviour in the creature stage, you have to conquer/ally to other tribes to get the other buildings.
That's pretty lame. There's no strategy at all, or really little. And it's quite boring.
There are also savage creatures on the planet, but you are limited even in this regard: you can hunt them for food (if you're carnivore/omnivore) or you can befriend them. In the latter case, one of them enters your village and sloooowly produces food for you, so that you don't have to use some of your units to harvest for it. But it's never really necessary, since you start your village near plenty of food and it quickly refills, so after a couple of minutes of harvesting, you have all the food you need.
It's quite shallow for me, but it's a necessary step if you want to get the bonus skills for Civ and Space stages (which you don't get if you start directly from those stages).
Maybe it's me, but I don't really get the point in the Tribe Stage.
Besides, you only have those two strategies to go along (force or music), so if you want to end this stage in the middle rating (I don't remember the name, sorry), you have to alternate between those two tactics, or go the opposite way you went in creature stage if you ended that one on one of the extremes.
And I suggest you start befriending rival tribes, because if you attack a couple of tribes, the remaining ones won't be well versed to yours. And it'll be difficult to befriend them.

What were you expecting? Starcraft? Remember who are the primary audience for this game, it's not for the hardcore RTSer who spends their waking hours finding better ways to bum rush those unprepared for the attack, but rather casual players who may not appreciate substance over style like the rest of us.

Most of the complaints that I have seen of the game are from those expecting a game that would cater to those who play RTSes and MMOs seriously, while your average joe seems to like it just fine.

I'm having fun with the game, but I don't know for how long. spore-civ stage doesn't offer that much re playability. I havn't spent enough time at the space stage yet to decide what I think of it.

The game seems to be open for different interpretations when it comes to intel design vs evo. On the one hand, creatures evolve to survive, on the other hand, you are designing the creatures and how they evolve. You are the intelligent designer.

Surely I wasn't expecting Starcraft or something THAT complex, but Tribe stage is TOO dumbed down that there's very little replayability to it. I find Civ stage more complex (as it was intended to be) and it can be worth replaying that stage to see different strategies in action.

But tribe stage has too little room to experiment around. Maybe I'm missing something, but it feels quite plain and uninteresting to me.
