Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition Looks Nuts

A ton of options and an attention to detail make this one look like a dream come true for longtime fighting game fans.

No Caption Provided

After digging through the menus and seeing everything that's been bolted onto it, it's clear that there are some folks at Capcom who care a great deal about making Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition the definitive version of the game for modern consoles. It starts with an arcade perfect version of the game and spreads out from there with a ton of unexpected options that make this much more than just an online version of a beloved 2D fighter.

It starts with a heavy in-game achievement system that looks similar to the one found in Capcom's Final Fight: Double Impact. Some are multitiered, so you'll finish level one of the EX move achievement by doing five EX moves, then another level for something like 25 EX moves or so, and so on. Some of these are tied into the platform-specific achievement/trophy system, but most of them are there to give you points that can be spent to unlock fan art, music, concept stuff, and so on.

It will have online play, powered by GGPO, which is some awfully solid net code. It will also have an elaborate training mode that breaks down the game's parry system as well as providing combo training for every character. Unlike Capcom's other fighting games, you can actually preview each training challenge to clearly see exactly what the game is expecting you to do. And it expects you to do some pretty rad stuff, including this little number, which is simply addressed in the game by its now-famous name, Evo Moment #37:

== TEASER ==

In addition to all this, there's an insane list of toggles that let you modify a lot of things about the game, like rules about how specific things cancel right down to basics like the ability to disable jumping. It almost looks like you could use these switches to come up with a full rebalance of the game, if that's what you're after. The game also contains a bunch of video options for sprite smoothing and optional scanlines, in case you're looking to duplicate the look of an old arcade cabinet.

In short, this downloadable release is packed with features that should make it a definitive version of the game. It'll be interesting to see if any players that were brought back into the fighting game fold by Street Fighter IV will be interested to go back and see a game that, statistically speaking, they probably skipped upon its initial release. If not, it'll almost certainly find a crowd among the fighting game faithful.

I was pleased with how the Final Fight/Magic Sword game handled the Vault stuff, so hopefully there are some cool bonuses and stuff to unlock.

I own the anniversary collection of street fighter for the original xbox, it's the only original xbox game I own. I've only kept it over the years for this game, good to know a better version of it is soon to come out. I'll be picking this one up when it comes out

I'll say it right now, so everyone can read it. Street Fighter III Third Strike is the greatest 2d fighter ever!

This release makes me giddy as can be, and removes one of the two things I was sad about when Xbox 1 Live went offline. Now where's my XBLA rerelease of Phantom Dust?

I loved Third Strike so much but some times it was so insane for me, I love that there's a fully featured training mode. And it'll let me recreate that cool evo moment!

I really like the idea of opening up the system for players to tinker with to get a balance they like, even as an excellent tutorial to bring novices up to intermediates, to let them see how the innards of the game work beyond just learning the buttons and a few combo strings.

Im curious as to why this took so long. Graphical filters are present on nearly all arcade emulators, and a GGPO version of 3S has been around for years.

I think 3S might be my favorite street fighter of all time.  I LOVE 4/SUPER4 but there something about 3 that really makes me want to play for literally hours on end.

Also, I'm totally biased towards sprites, especially GEORGOUS ones like in 3rd Strike.

They did buff Makoto for SF4 AE, but yeah, nowhere near the original's capabilities.   I was so excited about her inclusion in Super I wrote the SRK combo thread for her.  Such disappointment.  I still can't believe they took away her trademark Karakusa > s.HP xx Abare near corner combo.    In fact I recall seeing a quote back when SSF4 was released about Makoto - something along the lines of Ono opting to deliberately make her worse because her original design was "too violent".   The SF4 version is just... meh.  All meaty s.MP and instant tsurugi pressure.  Zero range and horrific recovery on her command grab.  Plays nothing like she's supposed to.

Anyway.  3S is back and I need to practice.  Get HYPE!!!  0__0

We played soooooo much 3rd strike on the dreamcast while i was in college from 2002-2005.  even with it being several years old at that point. it was still insane, and still the best street fighter until 4.

@HerbieBug: Don't get me wrong,  I definitely miss the parry system and a few other things, but overall the style and gameplay of 4 just grabs me more than the old ones do anymore.     I'll definitely be picking up 3rd strike though, to get back into some of that classic insanity.

I've never played Third Strike, so it should be interesting to see how it compares to all those other Street Fighter games. I've messed with the Alpha series and I found them to be sort of... ok. I dunno. Air blocking and universal counter moves make for a fairly defense focused fighter. Of course, this game has parrying, which at high enough levels is good enough to totally invalidate any form of zoning.

This was included in the Dreamcast version of the game, and maybe the Anniversary editions too, I'm not sure. You can definitely make this game crazy with these options.
