Symphony of the Night Composer Signs On For Skullgirls

Renowned composer signs onto this promising new 2D fighter.

Michiru Yamane, the composer of several  Castlevania titles (notably, of course,  Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), as well as other more whimsical joints like Elebits and beatmania IIDX, has signed on to do the music for Reverge Labs’ sharp-looking 2D fighter Skullgirls, the studio announced has announced.

In the press release, Yamane seemed stoked about the opportunity and noted the over-the-top, East-meets-West artistic direction in Skullgirls was a big factor in her decision to put ink to paper with the LA-based indie developer and its publisher, Autumn Games.

No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==“It was clear from the start that Skullgirls is something special, and I’m constantly seeking new and innovative projects to create for,” said Yamane. “After seeing the game’s distinctive artistic direction, and discussing its beautiful premise with Autumn Games and Reverge Labs, it was easy to be inspired."

“Because Skullgirls has such a unique style, it is important that the music both complements and adds to the game’s atmosphere,” she added. “I think fans will be very happy with the direction we are taking.”

Yamane left Konami and the Castlevania series in 2008 to become an independent composer. She got her break in 1998 with a composition in TWINBEE. Also, did we mention Symphony of the Night?!

Earlier this March, other Brad got a chance to sit down with two of Reverge’s developers and record a Quick Look EX of Skullgirls. As you’ll see, it’s a pretty flashy fighter that shares a thing or two in common with Capcom’s wilder creations.

Skullgirls is set to hit the Xbox 360 and PS3 this year.

I... really don't like the look of this game. I appreciate the detail in the animations but the art style is horrible, IMO. Also, it's like every character is Eddie from Guilty Gear mixed with animu school girls(INSERT ANGRY YAWN). It's so pandering and just, ugh. :/

Wait, seriously? She left Konami for... this? Fucking Skullgirls? What a waste of talent -- there are so many other games her music would've been perfect for. I would've loved to see her collaborate with PlatinumGames, for example. Not to say that it can't still happen, of course. But still, Skullgirls? Really?

She left Konami in '08 so it really couldn't have directly been because of this game. As for it being a "waste of talent" it's really no worse than her doing the music for Rumble Roses. In fact, I think it's pretty safe to say that Skullgirls will be both a better stylistic fit and a better game overall than that wholly misguided piece of garbage.

She's independent and took a paying gig.

Sorry you're not interested in the game, but don't attack her for taking a paying gig. And, hey, maybe all this Skullgirls publicity will get her more work on games you will be interested in the future.

Based on what?  An early demo build that had two functioning characters and numerous incomplete graphic and sound effects?

You truly go out of your way to be an arse in nearly every thread you post in, but if you're going to be a forum jackass, at least use some critical thinking skills.

Way to completely undermine the efforts of a start-up indie developer that actually seems to be doing something brilliant with their time. Jerkface.

Also, beatmania IIDX is hardly what I'd call "whimsical" >_> Cool, though. I'm sure she'll add a killer touch to the game.

Yamane's got enough cred to throw her job security to the wind and do whatever the hell she is interested in. Consummate confidence; hopefully she makes a positive impact on the game, which I recall as having Art Deco and the 'talkie' era film thematic elements.

Oh don't get me wrong -- I know it's just a paycheck and I'm really not faulting her for wanting to make some money, but usually when a composer decides to leave their company they go on to do bigger and better things. This certainly isn't the kind of gig I was thinking of. I suppose I must commend her for not being afraid to collaborate with an independent Western studio on their debut game. I just wish she had picked a game I had any reason to believe will turn out good and also wasn't being developed by a bunch of rude, elitist individuals (or one at least, anyway -- that guy from the Quick Look just rubbed me the wrong way).

Yamane is a top-tier composer as far as I'm concerned. You don't need to be some soundtrack aficionado to know her by name. She should be able to get a job pretty much any place looking for a good memorable soundtrack, and I'm just a little disappointed this is where she ended up.

Sorry, but I'm not gonna give them a free pass for being indie, and I just don't think the game looks very good, personally.

@Axersia: Honestly, I like video game music and haven't really seen her name/it isn't familiar to me. Too each his own. I mean it's good, but not something I immediately care about. That being said, this can only make the already promising Skullgirls be better.

We should probably consider the fact that Yamane may have grown tired of convention composition for conventional games, and wanted to throw her career a screwball.

It still boggles my mind how many people have a rabid vendetta against this game. Its like it personally insulted them or something.

Heh, this comments thread is amusing. A clear display of various people's tolerance toward unfinished games! I, personally, strongly dislike all fighting games, and I'm not a fan of the art style in this one, but I still think it looks great. I can see it for what it is; is a fresh take on the 2D fighting game genre brimming with potential. Last I saw it, almost everything was placeholder, but the things that were actually finished looked fantastic, disregarding my own dislike for the particular style. It's got quality where it counts.

And if working on something you think looks interesting is a waste of your time... well, it isn't, let's just say. There's more to it than money. That's the only thing a huge, epic, ambitious game could offer that this game can't. What this game can offer is inspiration and creative freedom. Musicians value those things. In fact, visual artists do, too. And programmers, also!

If, say, Bethesda ended up announcing that someone else would be making the music for Skyrim because Jeremy Soule ditched them to make music for indie games, I wouldn't call that a waste of his talent. I would think that's freaking awesome. That means games that normally wouldn't necessarily be able to afford a talented musicians would get a significant bump up in overall quality, and the musician himself would obviously be much more inspired, and happy, working on the new project. Otherwise he wouldn't do it. Sounds like a win-win to me. Companies with tons of money won't have any problem finding decent substitutes for their epic soundtracks.
