Take Two CEO Threatens the World With More Duke Nukem

Strauss Zelnick tells Forbes that 2K has future plans for the Duke Nukem brand.

Strauss Zelnick is, by all accounts, a pretty nice guy, especially as CEOs of major corporations go. But if it's one thing a steady diet of spy fiction and The Simpsons has taught me, it's that the nicest CEOs are usually the ones with secret plans for world domination and/or destruction.

Pictured: Strauss Zelnick, Take Two CEO and former circus contortionist.
Pictured: Strauss Zelnick, Take Two CEO and former circus contortionist.

Based on Zelnick's interview with Forbes today, it sounds like the next step in his plan to go all Hank Scorpio on the world is to move forward with new entries in the Duke Nukem franchise. When asked about future plans for the Duke Nukem IP, including any possibilities for film and TV off-shoots, Zelnick was quick to shoot down any immediate plans for other media, but did leave the lingering threat of future games wide open by saying, "We don’t really talk about it in detail but you will see future Duke IP coming from this company."

If that didn't just send shivers down your spine, I don't know what will.

Duke Nukem Forever has evidently been a financial success for the publisher, though whether or not that's relative to how much money was spent on the title over the last 15 years of development, we cannot be certain. At the very least, the game sounds like it's selling copies, in spite of largely negative reviews and significant audience criticism regarding the game's misogynistic, puerile, and sometimes downright nasty attempts at humor. The ensuing Internet kerfuffle has already led to insane people trying to bastardize science to prove the inherent "crappiness" of reviewers, and one PR person to commit career seppuku via Twitter.

Seemingly unsympathetic to the carnage already caused, Zelnick was defiant when asked for a reaction to the negative criticism associated with the game.

"...when we put something out I stand behind it, and will not compromise," he said, presumably while banging a fist down on a desk made from the bones of his enemies, while a shark swam menacingly in a tank behind him. "When you put all those things all together it’s difficult to be critical of the company. Because here in America, thank God, we have the ability to do what we want."

As a final piece of salient advice, Zelnick added, "What is there left to be said? I’m sorry if you don’t like it. Don’t consume it." On this point, Zelnick and the media would seem to be in total agreement.

Hey, I love the parts of Duke Nukem where Duke is actually talking and interacting, the rest though is fucking boring. If they can make it into a good game, that'd be awesome.

Is anyone seriously surprised by this? With DNF out of the picture Gearbox can make a brand new game without all the 3DRealms baggage. I'm looking forward to another Duke game, hopefully it will be of the quality of Gearbox's other games.

With a decent amount of actual humor and gameplay design talent, a Duke Nukem game could be great. A game doesn't have to be completely debased to be funny. Give me a Duke Nukem I want to play as, not shoot at.

Now is the time for that unavoidable kart racing game that any proper franchise eventually will get.

If they do a proper modern take on the franchise it might not be so bad.

Some would say this game had to be released, no matter what state it was in, so that someone can attempt to revisit the IP with a good effort. It's obvious this game has elements that were hip through the various stages of this titles extremely long life-cycle. Elements that the genre has largely left behind for good reasons. I would like to see one more attempt at making Duke relevant in the current video game era, but that would have to come from a tighter development cycle, and not the long, tortured, 14-year cycle that DNF suffered from.

I want more Duke Nukem. I want next to no load times. I want better music. I want more interesting gameplay segments and setpieces. Most importantly, I want it to be self-aware, kinda like how Jeff/Ryan mentioned in the quick look. I

n the world of the next game, everyone will loathe Duke, find him sexist, offensive and a complete asshole. The backlash in the real world should reflect the backlash that Duke receives in the game. Kind of like how everyone hates superheroes in The Incredibles, but with more tits.

Kind of already figured this, but it's good to hear about anyway. I really enjoyed DNF, but I would love to see a new Duke title with a proper development cycle from more competent developers.

Duke Nukem versus The Last Action Hero

Can play the game from either Duke or Arnold's point of view as they destroy each other's worlds. And after each world is destroyed, they try to come into our world - except Chuck Norris is there to stop them.

Lol, I think its just business speak to hold onto the IP. Nothing more.

I think they knew Forever was going to be as bad as it is. I'm not surprised they want to continue with Duke Nukem, since they really do want to make another great Duke Nukem game. When I was watching my brother play Forever (since I don't plan on doing so), I already got the sense that they were thinking of going forward with something else in the Duke world.

I think there is still a lot of room for another Duke Nukem game.  Gearbox makes great games and I am really interested to see their take on the whole thing, instead of finishing of someone else's work.

If Gearbox can make their own Duke Nukem game from scratch, it'll probably be great. They just need to put DNF behind them now and work on making an actual good game.

I don't think that Duke necessarily needs to go away, he just needs to be put into a game that's made and developed in the current age.  He needs an overhaul.
As long as the next Duke Nukem is made from the ground up by a competent developer, I'm not opposed to the idea.

I'm all for a NEW Duke Nukem game. I hate DNF, and how it just kept going despite derailing half a decade ago, BUT I still hold the franchise in high regards and would love a new game.

A game where the pre-production was made this side of the millennium!
