BREAKING: Is Giant Bomb's New News Editor Starting Tomorrow?

With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
I'm pleased to announce that as of Monday, seasoned newsman and all-around good guy Patrick Klepek will be joining the Giant Bomb team as News Editor. We've all thought long and hard about how best to expand our focus and provide higher-quality content for you, and adding Patrick to the team will bring exactly that. In addition to bringing his expertise to our current news output, one of the things Patrick will be focusing on is honest-to-goodness original reporting, ensuring that there are even more things on Giant Bomb that you can't find anywhere else.

Why news? Why now? Well, I should probably back up a bit.

Right around the time we started Giant Bomb back in 2008, I grabbed myself an RSS reader and subscribed to almost every single full-text gaming news RSS I could find with the idea that if we were going to start a site with no dedicated news person, I was going to need to be up on what's happening out there in the world. While we focused primarily on covering the games themselves, we'd dabble in news here and there, reporting things when they came our way and, more often than not, linking out to sites that were doing the legwork that we weren't. Beyond positioning some rugged soldiers like Brad Nicholson in direct path of the press release hose, It felt like it would be crazy to get into news. Other people--like Patrick, for example--had that buttoned up.

These days, I almost wonder if everyone decided that there's no money in news reporting or something. The sites that were fully devoted to it seem a little less focused these days. Some of them broke out and got into other types of content at their news team's expense. Others branched out into so much off-topic coverage that I had to cull them from my RSS feed. Still others straight-up vanished. Point being, I'm not getting as much news from the news sites as I used to, but the post count from these sites just seems to go higher and higher. I'm left with way too much digging to get to the important stuff from the authors that matter.

Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
So I've decided to, in my own way, do something about it. We've all known Patrick for awhile and have crazy respect for the work he's done. Everyone's pretty excited about having him here. We've been tossing around names for potential news candidates for what feels like a year now, but none of them felt quite right. Once we began talking to Patrick about coming over here, it didn't take long for all of those other names to sort of fall by the wayside. He'll be working directly out of our office and we'll all be thinking about presenting you with the most important game news out there with the level of insight and experience that you've come to expect from us.

And we'll probably manage to have a good time while we're at it. That, after all, tends to be our way.

But enough about that. What I want from you right now is two things! First, join me in welcoming Patrick to Giant Bomb. Second, I think we all have some ideas about what an ideal news organization should look like these days, but I want to know what you think about it. How do you want your news delivered? Is text the thing? Should we develop some kind of weekly news wrap-up show? Call-ins? A daily podcast where the day's headlines are delivered directly to your earholes? Should we beam our news stories into space so that aliens can know about updated release dates and the reasons behind their favorite studio's layoffs? Should we rope Patrick into some kind of heinous Tested live show segment where he's blindfolded and eating some kind of awful "food" during his first week here? Like I said, let me know.

This sounds like a great move, Jeff. Honestly, I only started listening/following the site after a buddy of mine at KAOS Studios told me about your firing from Gamespot for being honest about a review score. That was when it hit me that I really wanted to know more about you since I had seen first-hand the siren's call of expo shows and press events warping the "News" reported by many sites/mags into Marketing-approved slop. So, if you tell me this new hire will only strengthen the News supplied by GB, then I am fully on-board.

As for the delivery of such news. I must disagree with the video idea. The truth being that I dislike the whole idea of a person standing uncomfortably in front of a green screen and reading off a monitor like some vapid news anchor (see: Comicvine's Weekly News Round-up).  I am much more inclined to see a small podcast or audio portion to be updated bi-weekly that can be accessed on the Home page or via a small News button on the Main GB Toolbar. Hopefully it could contain the latest and most important news from Developer leaks, to studio closings and new game announcements. Just the facts, ma'am. Then the regular shenanigans and subjective ideas could be left for the Bombcast.
That being said, I trust you to make the best decision and can't wait to see the result.

I like Patrick, but in all honesty I don't come to Giant Bomb for news.

VG247, Joystiq, CVG, etc. These sites have already got it down to a fine art.

If its text articles (my preferred method of receiving news) the front page needs alot more space for articles, some days stories posted early get bumped off the front page by the afternoon. This is a no no. Out of the other two suggestions I would say daily 20 min podcast, i want my news the day it happens, if you report on it at the end of the week I will have already been informed from the lesser gaming websites and will be getting nothing out of a week end news digest apart from the charm GB brings. It's this charm (garrulous charm) which adds to the experience so if I could get it firsthand from you guys and not have to sort through the "CAT PLAYZ VIDYA GAMES" articles on kotaku to get news i might as well enter a blood pact to GB and never leave.

Welcome  Mr. Klepek!

This is the beginning of something beautiful for GB. Just make sure that no matter what way or form the news will be distributed, a PRESS hat is required :)

Patrick Klepek is a big 'get' for GB, had a lot of respect for him since his 1up days. Dude does a lot of legwork in his news coverage so i'm really happy he's on board with GB.

As much as i'd love more Whiskey Media podcasts, i'm not sure if he'd be able to get the news out in a timely fashion using that format alone. Maybe a quick 20-30 minute daily wrap-up on top of text-based news? Also, add him to the bombcast.

Text be the thing.  Maybe a daily wrap-up of the days big stories; give him his own Bombcast segment for the big weekly stuff...

Welcome Mr Klepek! Be sure to demand a fedora from the GB team.
Secondly, Text, for most things, is just fine. It would be hard to decide what news-story was "video-worthy" and which was not. Plus, making videos = delayed news. Something you might want to consider is a monthly pod-cast or twice-weekly short pod-cast on news. This would allow the GB team to drop the news segment from the bombcast and BRING BACK THE GODDAMN NINTENDO DOWNLOADS SECTION. The NDX is great, but it still doesn't compare to the heady days when the bombcast had its own entire section dedicated to Nintendo downloads.

But a news pod-cast might not work out. I can't imagine that there is much note-worthy news to talk about in pod-cast format. So text is fine. Video might be going a bit too far, especially since most video-game news is "Studio X working on Project X" or "Game Z has been delayed for another Y" or "So and So talked smack about who's-his-face".

So yeah.... text is good. Probably just stick with text. I've go no problem with text. I like reading.

I like the sound of bit-sized daily podcasts with news rap-ups. This should, of course, be on top of the text articles that precede it.

wow. nice snag.

as for the delivery, i say text as usual for when things first come in, but then a quick wrap-up video at the end of the week. yeah, you already mentioned both of those, but they were indeed good ideas...

This is fantastic news. Patrick is certainly once of the best possible additions to this site. I'm all in favour of GB being a small team, but I feel he's the sort of man who can fit into that super well.

Welcome to Giant Bomb Patrick! I'm sure the great and friendly community here will adopt you quickly as one of their own.

Well GB once again you have shown great restraint in expanding your staff and content and have made the perfect decision with hiring Patrick, now that you all are ready to bring new content to the site. Patrick has always seem to me to have that old timey news attitude, so the things i would like to see for GB news, is standard text news but with real industry reporting in text, video, audio format. And i think he would be a great addition to the bombcast. i think keeping Patrick behind a text format would be limiting to his talents as i have observed over the years.

So welcome aboard Patrick i can't wait to see you make your mark here at BiantBomb.

Welcome  Patrick Klepek.

-Text news works great for the most part.
-No daily podcast unless it happens everyday and has a good amount substance.
-A weekly wrap-up video would be great piece of content.  (A daily podcast would be a very odd coupling with this feature)

WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUCK I like that guy on G4's Feedback!
I can't believe Giantbomb is gettin a new dude and it's someone I allready like.

Weekly news wrap-up show please, I used to allways watch that when Gamespot would have it in a tiny video on the side-bar. It was great.
ALSO ComicVine does a news show and I watch it even though I don't know shit about comics. It's just so easy to watch.

EDIT-- MAYBE it coule be combined with I Love Mondays?

In addition to text stories as they come, I believe that a Giant Bomb-style Weekend Update is the way to go.  It should go up on Sunday when there's generally little content.

Very nice. In response to your question Jeff I would like it if you tried out some sort of news wrap up video, kind of daily fix-ish although more in depth. I much prefer video content and it's what GB does best so I think you guys could do it with relative ease.

Also what is the prospect of hiring Gary Whitta or has he moved on to bigger and better things?

Klepek is kind of a hipster but he does know his stuff.  Eh.

As a podcast junkie and WM subscriber, I have way too many things to consume late in the week. I think a daily 10 minute news blast is probably the best idea.  It lets you stay more current.  I also don't much bother with news blogs anymore, most of my news is covered in podcasts, and it sucks when you guys post your show on Monday, then some big shit happens on Friday, and I have to wait like four days to hear your opinion on it.

TL;DR - I think a daily news video or audio show of 10 minutes or less is probably the best bet.  If that's not realistic, just text is generally fine.  You guys do better with video than anywhere else, though.

Oh, and dollars to donuts says he takes Brad's place on the Bombcast.

Welcome, Patrick. The overwhelming majority of people here love you and that speaks to like-mindedness of the staff at GB and their users. My suggestion is to add him to the bombcast or maybe just to add him to the news section of the bombcast. Some here don't want the bombcast to change but I don't think they'd have a problem with him being added to the news portion seeing as he is the news editor.

Welcome to Patrick! Heard this guy on some podcasts, seems like a good guy.

I think a daily podcast for news would be excessive.  I would rather see text news stories on the main page, or perhaps a morning edition of yesterday's news.  I just don't want to see hastily written, short stories dominating the front page of Giant Bomb (not to name names, but, ahem Dtoid)

This is fucking awesome news. I vote for news delivery via text for day-to-day stuff, then either a video or preferably a podcast to wrap things up at the end of every week. Again, this is hella exciting, welcome to the bombsquad, Patrick!

All right, I'll bite: Welcome to Giant Bomb, Patrick!

As for how the news should be delivered, the weekly news show sounds like quite an awesome idea. Perhaps this is just me being optimistic but I could see a Monday or Friday news show, similar in style to your discussion on the week's news during the bombcast, leaving room for something else. That slot could be used for, let's say, some sort of rundown on downloadable titles for Nintendo platforms.

A daily podcast sounds a little resource intensive and depending on length, I'm not sure I would even be able to catch it often enough that it would be useful to me. It takes me several days sometimes just to get through the bombcast even. I think most importantly, the news stuff shouldn't get in the way of all the other stuff you guys do. It wouldn't be the same if we got two less quick looks a week just to have a news segment.

Text is a must. I'm not sure if this addition means Brad N won't be posting here anymore but having a full time dedicated news guy could mean more up to the minute news. I know some people here don't care but I personally would like to have less RSS filler too. It would be fantastic if Giant Bomb were to become my only (or one of very few) sources of what's happening in the gaming world. Of course, relevant news helps. I don't need to sift through sales reports or misguided rumors to get to the important stuff.

One thing though: the website needs a way to separate news posts from videos. It isn't an issue most days, but sometimes there's such an influx of videos or news in one day that they just start pushing each other off the main page (most recently Capcom's big embargo day). It then requires some extra digging to get to the goings-on for that day and I bet some people just straight-up miss the vids/articles. Perhaps moving the status updates and blogs down in favor of having two columns for news and videos? I'm sure the Top Men can work their magic on it.

This turned into more of an essay than I originally planned so I'll stop now. No matter what, I'm sure you guys know what's best and I look forward to seeing how this all turns out for Giant Bomb in the future.

Welcome Patrick! This is a excelent addition to the already awesome Bomb crew! I followed Patrick arround a whilte when he was at 1UP and MTV Multiplayer Blog. I lost track of him on G4. I have nothing but high expactions from this decision. Quality reporting, that's where the future lies!

I want to see a video segement of some kind for this. Patrick is good in front of a camera so use that is my opinion! Giantbomb makes awesome video content and some kind of news summation/discussion show would be cool to have. It would be different and that is what Giantbomb is about! I don't want it in podcast form since it frankly more easy to just watch a decent lenght news segment than downloading and wait for the right moment to listen to a podcast. In front of my computer I want video content!

Welcome once again Patrick! Looking foward to your work!

Record the news as a daily video, then get him to record a podcast of the news, but backwards. So it's kinda like a game where we have to work out what the news is by writing everything down and reading it backwards, y'know coz games are cool and stuff!

Welcome to Giant Bomb Patrick.

I kind of like my news in a daily bulletin form. Text, few images. I don't like when each individual news story gets its own page because things get lost in the clutter. Perhaps a dedicated tab or spot on the homepage that is always "Today's news" and within that link to archives of previous days?

It might be nice to do a short video version of it once a week too. I wouldn't want daily podcasts though I'm afraid.

Welcome to the site.  My preference would be that only particularly juicy news get videos.  I like having things I can read at work, and hate videos that are just videos for their own sake.
