THQ Officially Dissolving as Bankruptcy Auction Yields Multiple Buyers [UPDATEDx2]

Several major properties are scooped up by other publishers, though a few are left holding the bag.

Goodnight, sweet publisher.
Goodnight, sweet publisher.

THQ is no more.

The publisher, which found itself on the wrong end of a bankruptcy-induced auction yesterday, will dissolve as soon as its bankruptcy hearing and subsequent sales transitions are completed. Confirmation of this news comes in the form of a letter sent to THQ employees today, which was obtained by Kotaku. According to the letter:

That leaves a few properties and studios unaccounted for, most notably Darksiders developers Vigil Games, as well as the company's long-held WWE license. The letter outlines that THQ will be making every effort to find buyers for the remaining properties. However, outside of a skeleton crew remaining to help with the transition, THQ's primary staff is apparently being laid off.

We'll update this story as more information becomes available.

Update: DDInvesting, who has been covering the THQ hearings with great regularity, has posted the prices apparently paid for the individual properties. They are as follows:

  • $500k Homefront (Crytek)
  • $26M for Relic (Sega)
  • $2.5M for THQ Montreal (Ubisoft)
  • $3.2M for South Park (Ubisoft)
  • $11M for Evolve (Take-Two)
  • $22.3M for Volition (Koch Media)
  • $5.8M for Metro (Koch Media)

Update 2: Both Ubisoft and Koch Media have sent out press releases confirming the purchases. Koch provided few concrete details, except to say that its publishing arm Deep Silver would be at the head for continued development in the Metro and Saints Row franchises, and that more details on each franchise would be coming in the next few months. As for Ubisoft, its press release simply confirms the aforementioned purchases, but does at least note that South Park: The Stick of Truth is still scheduled for release this year.

Elsewhere, IGN is reporting that Take-Two Interactive has stepped up to take control of the WWE game license. We've sent a confirmation request to Take-Two's representatives and will update with a response if we receive one.

Well this went about as poorly as it could. I can't believe Homefront got purchased but Vigil didn't.

Not surprised about Vigil one bit, Darksiders is a very mediocre series. Also interesting to note that Sega outbid Zenimax for Relic by about 300 thousand dollars, which is really close.

"Next up is the fantastic Homefront franchise. Let's say we start the bidding at $500k!"

*Crytek rep scratches nose*

"That's $500k for the man in the back there!"

Koch Media, the parent company of Dead Island publisher Deep Silver, has purchased Volition Inc. and the Saints Row brand, as well as the Metro franchise.

This post made me so happy as I love Dead Island and so far I cant wait to see their future with the saints row franchise.. Metro just needs to come out awesome for last light and I can see it finishing there. On another note, Someone needs to buy Vigil games Niao so I can enjoy more darksiders.

So the Auction brought in an additional 11.3 million dollars over the $60 million Clearlake offer for everything, and THQ still has some IP's to sell off later, like Darksiders which might bring more money to pay down debts with.

I wouldn't mind Deep Silver acquiring the Saints Row franchise considering the "bad and crazy" publicity they been showing. With the zombie bust and the hidden code for the Feminist Whore perk. It just shows how far their willing to push certain boundaries just like Rockstar and GTA. And that could fit with SR with its fucked up weapons and lewd activities.

Plus if SR4 becomes a success, maybe we might been seeing Red Faction in the future. (I don't know if Red Faction would come with Volition or Koch would need to buy the ip for it)

I also would like to see if South Park is going to get an Assasins Creed costume with Uplay or be able to customize the main character's head into a French Canadian like Terrance and Phillip. :)

What a weird company to pick up saint's row and metro. I'm assuming Crytek assumed the Homefront rights through "cost of development" not being paid to them.

Not sure how I feel about Deep Silver getting Saints Row. Also surprised that Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo didn't make a move considering we are moving back into a part of the console cycle where first party games become much more important.

Volition and Saint's Row are still together, and that's all that matters. As long as they have any kind of budget and are allowed to keep full staff, I'm happy. Them acquiring Metro worries me, though. I really hope Last Light comes out, instead of being scrapped

Over on Twitter, Platinum Games is making some gestures towards ex-Vigilants.

Also apparently Inaba says he wants to buy them.

Hope?

THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

Yeah. I mean... holy shit. Yes. Yes, please.

Even if PG can pick up a bunch of Vigil folk, that would be stellar. But if PG gets Vigil folk AND the IP... glory glory hallelujah.

ha wow you are uninformed.

SEGA owns Creative Assembly, one of the other few great strategy devs, and it has worked out fantastically... do you know about this? Do you know CA is making a Warhammer fantasy game right now?

Unfortunately, I am reading now that Homeworld is still owned by THQ... lets hope SEGA buys that too.

Most of the sales seem like decent enough fits. Sega seems like a good fit for Relic, Crytek was working on Homefront 2 already, so it's no surprise that they are buying it and Ubisoft should handle South Park fairly well, as long as they don't add their crappy DRM to the PC version. As for Saints Row and Metro? Well, I think Saints Row should be fine as long as Volition are still together, I'm not sure on what kind of budget they will be given though. I'm not sure about Metro, but I'm sure it will turn out fine as well. 2K make great sports games, so WWE will ft nice in their line up.

As for Vigil and Darksiders? Man, that's terrible they didn't get picked up. I haven't played Darksiders 2, but the original Darksiders was great. Hopefully a lot of the staff get hired by Platinum, and they buy the IP as hinted at. Glad to see Platinum reaching out.

In the end though, I'm really sad to see THQ go. I wish the best to everyone who is now jobless, and hope that they find employment soon.

Goodnight, sweet prince.

Found a link to this document over at RPS. It shows who the second place bidders where. Interesting where some of these games could have went if they had just bid a few hundred thousand more. It looks like Ubisoft came close to buying almost everything outright, and that Relic almost went to Zenimax but they got out bit by Sega for $300k

Wow, Koch Media was definitely not the company I thought would take Saints Row, and at such a low price too. I was prepared to hear about some epic bidding war between Activsion, Ubisoft and EA.

Homefront sorta makes sense for Crytek. It was a cheap buy, and now they have a potential off-year franchise to differentiate themselves from just Crysis.

That Vigil hasn't been bought yet isn't surprising; Darksiders 2 wasn't that great of a seller, although Platnum potentially taking the franchise may be interesting. You'd think they wouldn't since they already have Bayonetta, but if they can make it work, why not? I just hope they don't forget the Zelda/RPG elements of the series and go all action.

Not sure why people are excited about Platinum and Darksiders. It won't even be a Darksiders game anymore if Platinum works on it. Also just seems like a waste of money.

Hmm... interesting news on Vigil (can read past comments for it but it pertains to this speculation)
I don't want them devs to be out of a job, though. I mean, cool if Darksiders gets bought but here's hoping Vigil comes out of this alive.
Yikes.
I was thinking Nintendo would be a good fit as well, but they are not known for Mature games really (does metroid really count? Maybe.) and are oft not in the market for buying up other developers. Nintendo is extremely doubtful but would make sense.
