Ubisoft Responds to Assassin's Creed III Leaks by Just Up and Revealing its Cover Art [UPDATED]

After everybody already pretty much leaked the setting and protagonist of the publisher's latest time-travelling murder simulator, Ubisoft just reveals it all official like.

No Caption Provided

As you can see from the image on the side here, Assassin's Creed III's box art has officially been released by Ubisoft, and it confirms what everyone on the Internet has been buzzing about for the last couple of days: the lead character is of Native American descent, and the game takes place during the American Revolution.

All sorts of different art leaks had been popping up over the last day or two, some via a Best Buy employee posting promotional art sent to the store in anticipation of the reveal, and another via Game Informer's website (snagged by a NeoGAF user), which inadvertently posted a banner showing a new assassin holding a tomahawk and old-timey pistol against the backdrop of Washington crossing the Delaware.

And now we have confirmation of all of that. The lead character will be (at least partly) of Native American descent, and will be stabbing/shooting dudes against the backdrop of America's fight for independence. It's not that I hate the British or anything, but frankly, I'm quite looking forward to the notion of dropping a few tomahawks on a few Redcoat skulls. It'll be just like the movie The Patriot! Except with time travel. And without Mel Gibson. And maybe not horrible.

UPDATE: Game Informer just revealed their dual covers for their upcoming Assassin's Creed III cover story, which you can see and then begin picking apart for obscure details below.

I'm amazed at peoples inability to grasp this simple concept.

But on the gripping hand, Desmond's family pole does have a ring to it...

The real hot potato will be how they portray slavery. In a game that is all about freedom, they pretty much need to take it into account.
I'd be curious how they tackle that as well.
by never ever showing or mentioning it
You're probably right. It's a subject ALOT of developers haven't wanted to touch, and for good reason.

@TrueEnglishGent: If Rockstar can get away with killing American cops I think Ubisoft can get away with killing American soldiers. Although, I do understand that Americans revere their soldiers with a kind of religious status these days and even some of the most ardent American critics of American jingoism have to pause and mumble a little prayer of "but I support the troops" every now and again.

Also didn't the very first game have you as a third party in a war between two sides that were being controlled by the Templar? I'm pretty sure killing both rebels and redcoats isn't too much a departure.

Like most people, I just hope they don't go the easy route and make the British the "Bad Guys" and the revolutionaries the "Good Guys."

Fuck yes. That art is incredible. This could be exactly the shake up the series needed. So far removed from the settings in previous games, which is great.

I skipped Revelations and I'm completely on board for a new AC in a different setting. Also, a super interesting time in history. Can't wait to see what they do with it.

Time to stab historical figures in the face and neck!

@firecracker22: I guess some people liked it.....

But really I found it more annoying to have to see digital Crap all over medieval times. The dude could of been reading a damn book for all I care.

Wow, I'm actually super interested in this all of a sudden. That's a really interesting time period for an open world action game, I just wonder what the environments are going to end up being like. Mainly just army camps or what?

Food for thought, what if the game portrays the American faction as being supported by the Templar's to break free of the British in order to allow the Templar's to get a foothold in a country from its early beginning thus allowing them to infiltrate and expand in its growth with little opposition.

@Remonster: I thought it was established that the memories were only transmitted through the male side... Besides making it impossible to have a female protagonist from Desmond, it makes the possible candidates a straight line.

I am not sure why everyoine seems to think you will be fighting the English. The majority of Native Americans were pissed with the US at the time and King George offered them all sorts of shit to fight on the side of the Monarch. Plus this is made by Canadians - much more likely they will have you killing american soldiers :D

I'm excited for this. Being developed by a non-US company, it might actually be more accurate to history than what we're taught in grade school. Even as someone from California, they seriously straight up lie to you about almost everything in history. I hate to think about how much worse it's taught in the south.

I was skeptical, but I'm now intrigued.

I think it's more likely that this will be Assassins versus Templars, not Americans versus the British (at least I hope.)

After all, why would a native american care who the American colonies were paying their taxes to?

Thinking about this more, the thing i liked about teh AC games the most was the architecture.

The early American buildings aren't that awe inspiring as any of the stuff in early AC gaemes.

Because so far all we have seen is the protagonist killing British soldiers and him fighting alongside George Washington.

Eh, I'm sure the game will probably be good but all I really want is a Desmond game that will wrap up the current storyline. After the incredible ending to AC2 I want to see the real story resolved and not dragged out any longer than it already has been.

They are not only soldiers, they are "founding fathers", which for Americans is almost reverse Godwin.

i love how they just double down on such a ridiculous time period. their so determined gall has gotten everyone on board.

does deserve a mention how assassins creed does explore those time periods which have been very much unexplored in videogames.

Renascence and Revolutionary periods.

@thealexray: Well if the ancestor you play as in AC3 is on the other side of Desmond's ancestry, isn't it a weird coincidence he dresses exactly like the Italian side that historically he shouldn't have met yet?

It sounds like the perfect direction for the series to go in. The American Revolution makes so much sense as a setting. The only thing I'm worried about is that they'll go all spiritual and mystical with the Native American stuff. I hope we're not talking to tribe leaders with names like Crow-Foot and reflecting on spiritual nonsense. It's real easy to get real cheesy with that stuff.

I have now grasped this simple concept. Thanks for your help. That brings up another question for me, then. Was Ezio a descendant of Altair? I just finished AC: Revelations and I think he may have given some indication of that toward the end, but I'm not sure. I kind of assumed that, but I suppose they were probably different branches of the tree, right?

Obviously there are other Assassins too, but I think everyone assumes this will keep going with Desmond's ancestors in the storyline of the games for now. I think that's a pretty safe assumption. Then again, people would have said playing as Solid Snake was a pretty safe assumption for MGS 2 as well, so anything could happen I suppose.

In all of the games the assassin has always been related to Desmond. I suppose they don't HAVE to have this person related to Desmond, but I would like to see what Desmond will be doing while this other assassin is in the animus.

No interest, and that's not just because I'm British ;)

Seriously though, Revelations is just sitting on my shelf, played a couple of hours of it and was bored after loving AC2 & Brotherhood. Series feels a little tired. And I can't imagine free-running in revolutionary times for some reason.
