Ubisoft's Tactics Are Making uPlay Less Attractive Than Ever

If you wanna open this gold chest, connect uPlay! If you wanna open this blue chest, download the companion app! How about...no?

No Caption Provided

The best way to enjoy an Assassin's Creed game is by running around, and letting one's whims be your guide. Suddenly feel like chasing after a collectible hidden near a ledge? Want to indulge in solving a murder mystery? It's a series whose world benefits from taking a little from column a, a little from column b. But Assassin's Creed Unity, in the interest of selfish corporate interests, quickly grinds this approach to a halt.

There are chests everywhere in Unity. While I haven't done a proper count, it wouldn't surprise me if the game sports several hundreds chests throughout the expansive world of revolutionary France. Chests provide players with money to buy supplies in the early hours of Unity, as you learn how the game's larger economy functions. When I stumbled upon gold and blue chests, however, I made a curious discovery.

See, gold chests are uPlay-specific chests, and it means you can't open them unless you've connected Unity to a uPlay account. Blue chests require connecting Unity's companion app on iOS and Android. Not so smooth, Unity. This isn't clear until interacting with either. If you decline the option, they don't vanish. They're always there--taunting. You can collect every other chest in the game, but unless you decide to link up with these chests, they remain out of reach. It's terribly obnoxious, and hard to imagine the development team was excited about creating additional hurdles for players to engage with the game.

Every time I run across a gold or blue chest, I'm annoyed all over again. And like every other collectible in Unity (or any Assassin's Creed game these days, really), there's a lot of them.

I don't want to use uPlay, and it's nothing against Ubisoft specifically. I'm simply tired of juggling a million different accounts, and uPlay is yet another one to add to the pile, one that currently exists without any particularly amazing benefits to offer me. I signed up for uPlay because I had to sign up for uPlay. There hasn't been a moment where I've sat around wondering "gee, I wonder what's happening on uPlay today." uPlay isn't offensively bad most of the time (so long as it's up), and if you're on a console, it might as well not exist. It doesn't make a great case for itself. On Steam, games separately launches uPlay before you jump in. It's mostly inconvenient (and I have no interest in maintaining yet another friend list), but hey, we have Steam to thank for companies becoming obsessed with individual storefronts.

Granted, when Steam launched with Half-Life 2 in 2004, it was a dumpster fire. Steam has come a long way, but it took years of iteration. It's possible uPlay could undergo a similar overhaul, but there was nothing like Steam in 2004. Steam and others have matured into useful storefronts and community hubs. uPlay exists in that world, so it's held to a higher standard in its early days. Ubisoft doesn't get 10 years.

What you see when loading up uPlay these days.
What you see when loading up uPlay these days.

The reason Steam is popular is due to trust. It's fast, easy, reliable, and does what I want, when I want. When Wadjet Eye Games tried to give away a DRM-free version of Blackwell Deception, players complained because it wasn't a free version for Steam. That's what Valve has been able to build over a decade, and it didn't come fast or easy.

Why do I need to use uPlay? Because Ubisoft would prefer to keep the slice of profits going to Steam and other places, and hopes players will eventually buy games exclusively through uPlay? That might sound compelling to Ubisoft, but it's not compelling to me, the player.

It's not like I'm excited to open more chests in Unity, a game I'm happy to have finished simply so I don't have to play more of it. The Assassin's Creed games have too many aimless collectibles as it stands, so in some sense, removing a few might be a form of sweet relief. (Discovering how to filter the map's icons might have saved my life.) But it's how the chests were integrated into the game, representing little more than an ugly strong-arm tactic to encourage uPlay adoption and the downloading of an app. Ubisoft isn't offering an interesting piece of DLC or story elements, it's keeping a series of chests slightly out of reach.

Or maybe that says it all? Even Ubisoft doesn't think uPlay is worth more than a few pieces of coin? I'm not sure what's is sadder, but I do know the net result of running into a blue or gold chest meant I wouldn't connect to uPlay out of principle. Ubisoft probably won't blink an eye, since they already have my money, but it's the least I can do. This is why I'll be clicking past any uPlay prompts in the future.

While I've basically railed on uPlay for the last couple hundred words, the same argument applies to locking chests behind a companion app. If you want players to "engage" with your brand, find something that's not so blatantly corporate. Put in some effort, at least, if you want some of that sweet synergy.

Side note: on Twitter last night, Giant Bomb user Fobwashed made this amazing image:

UPDATE: orusaka in the comments explored what happens when you link up, and it sounds horrible:

"Just to clear up some inaccuracies in the post, the gold and blue chests require more than just for you to sync up to Uplay or the companion app. The gold chests are actually tied the Initiates web-page where you achieve levels from, among other things, having played previous AC games. Simply linking will not unlock the chests. The Blue chests similarly will not simply unlock by linking with the companion app. You have to solve the glyph puzzles and do the missions on the companion app to unlock those chests."

The Gold Chests are tied to their Initiates program where you get XP from playing previous and current Assassin's Creed games. That XP levels you up and you can only unlock certain chests if you're a certain level. Basically you have to play a different game to unlock those chests in Unity. They are worse than the Blue ones.

It doesn't help that Initiates is also bugged right now and isn't awarding the right amount of XP for past games. I completely beat all of the previous games, but Assassins Creed 2: Brotherhood for example is saying I didn't and I have 0 XP in that game.

That mini map comparison is basically a summary of the franchise's trajectory. So, so bloated. I'm still on the side of having fun with Unity, but I always set the map filter to Missions only.

Who cares? The chests and whatever else are not needed and just bonuses for people who use it. Every company forces you to use their service on the pc these days, console games get off lighty...

I'm loving Unity, not had any performance issues, only had the odd glitch which I've seen in every open world game. I'm loving the gameplay, the city is amazing, I love the riddles and murder mystery stuff and how you can pretty much enter like 70% of the buildings.

Great game but as usual the Internet bandwagon of hate has to jump on every game this year. I bet most people moaning haven't even played it....

Like all the people moaning about the Xbox one last year, every game requires day one patches or always online connections now. Microsoft should have stuck with their original idea rather than listen to Internet trolls. What has the ps4 given us? No games and the same crap Sony operating system.

It's things like this that make me grateful the only Ubisoft game I actually like is Far Cry 3. I'll wait to see if more of these gems appear in number 4 (when it's cheaper and finally appears in the UK version of Steam.)

Jesus. This just sounds like a bit much. Forcing a player to utilize a computer or companion app to access story in Bungie was one thing, but damn if it forces you to do it multiple ways and times in order to open in-game chests.

That's just too much.

While your statement is valid unto yourself, presuming that person has to play a game to find abrasive systems such as these is a bit silly. We get it. You're defensive because you spent money on the game, and you like the game. I'm the same way with Destiny. However, egregious systems such as these need to be called out, and acting like these people doing that is going to destroy the game you love is taking it a bit to far. Continue to enjoy your game, let people gripe about systems you obviously don't care about, and just be a happier person.

Those chests aren't really vital to the main game. It's convoluted and weird but honestly, you're not really missing out on much by not interacting with them.

Thank you Patrick! AC is one my big gaming loves, but Unity's poor state and gross walled off chests is totally awful. No ubisoft, I may have fallen for uplay back when Brotherhood was out and you told me I just *had* to try your cool new multiplayer (ugh) but this time...no, just no.

I think reviews should take this sort of nonsense in consideration when scoring a game. And also add big warnings on top: 'GAME IS DEPENDENT ON UNRELIABLE SERVERS' or 'GAME REQUIRES UNSTABLE EXTERNAL SOFTWARE'. It will be near impossible to play current games in 10 years time because the disc version barely works, and you won't be able to update it anymore, nor connect to servers that have been taken down years ago to even play the game. I guess pirate groups should be considered saviours of the gaming culture if things keep going on like this...

It's completely disgusting. Buy a game for $60, and I should be able to attain everything without signing up on a website or getting a companion app.

I don't mind micro-transactions which they sell throughout to help someone get from A to Z quicker. It's not that intrusive, but going up to a chest and having a website launch or it ask me to download a companion app totally takes me out of the experience.

Not to mention, there are achievements/trophies tied to getting all chests. Just gross.

Anyone who wants to preach that Steam needs competitors and therefore Origin and Uplay are services worth having should stop saying that and support GoG instead.

You want these services to not be in the hands of total assholes.

Honestly, I thought uPlay was pretty cool with Black Flag. It was a nice moment to go from playing the games on my 360 to a PS4 and because of this service it knew I had played the past games and gave me outfits from them for doing so.

Unity not so much, it's broken for me. I made an initiates profile, linked it to my uPlay account and initiates says I've not played any other AC game. I check uPlay and they're all still there so they're just not talking to each other. I downloaded the app just to get the Altair costume, it recognises that I've connected it to my account but is bugged and won't unlock it for me saying I'm on a PC when I'm on PS4. It's making it really easy to break my compulsion of getting all of the chests in these games though, which is great with all of the new games coming out but it's put me off ordering Far Cry 4 because Ubisoft.

Ubisoft has officially overtaken EA and is now the champion of pissing off their customers. I can't believe how many bad decisions they have taken this season. I voted with my wallet and I hope many will do so as well. It's the only language the marketing scum who are behind all this crap understands. I hope they clean house and refocus on what's important.

@kerafyrm: Yea. You can do that; buck that trend. I personally just mostly not engage with these conversation. If I want to discuss that stuff I do so with people on my friend's list over IM or voice chat rather than scream into the void. Makes for a better dialogue. The ratio of comments that changes my outlook on things to plain white noise is too poor for forums to be worth spending time in them. Sorry forums :P

The thing I dislike most about uPlay and Origin is that for the most part, they only support games released by Ubisoft and EA. Steam only works as well as it does for me because I can play almost all PC games on it. They even go so far as to allow you to add games to their library that you didn't purchase from them directly. I think sharing of keys between uPlay, Origin, and Steam is going to be unlikely because I doubt EA and Ubisoft are going to want to sell a game on their service and give you a Steam key which is essentially another copy of their game.

Also, I've got way too many friends lists. I wish there were an easy way to unify them all =\

I don't have Unity. And I don't think I ever will. But those app tied chests would piss me off! I have a Windows Phone, which I know is far from a popular mobile platform but still major enough if you ask me. If Ubisoft can't be bothered to go all for it, it says a lot about how unimportant those chests really are.

I thought it might actually be fun to do the companion app. It's not. It's simply tedious. Thankfully, the stuff in those chests is also lame and completely unnecessary. In the end the chests are simply a nuisance.

Ubi has had years of watching other companies try to do online platforms and sales. They don't exist in a bubble. If they think they are in a bubble, they're doing it all wrong. Their users are not complete idiots who have only used uPlay. The fact you need a companion app in iOS or Android is proof of that.

This sums up modern AC games (even the good ones, honestly). They sometimes have cool stuff, but they can be terribly obnoxious with all their filler. At this point it's getting worse than Dragon Age 2.

I totally agree with Patrick, when I came across my first blue chest and saw that message I was totally disappointed and put off really badly. To make it worse I tried linking my Uplay account with the companion app and couldn't get it to work so I uninstalled the app immediately and just ignored those stupid ass chests.

As for the gold chests, you use those to unlock special cosmetic armor in game and the way it works totally reminds me of the legacy system in SWTOR where you're supposed to play with more than just one character to gain legacy levels. The difference is I love SWTOR and am happy to play all the different characters where as I don't want to have to go and buy all the assassin's creed games on uplay just to unlock some special armor in Unity that is just cosmetic and doesn't have any stats.

I think you'll find I agree with you. I find it abhorrent. I simply pointed out inaccuracies in the article. That said, as have been mentioned, you really aren't missing much with these chests. The golden chests contain mostly costumes of older protagonists, so if you really wanted to play as Ezio, I guess you're out of luck, but otherwise, you should be all good.

I agree that it would make more sense if the chests only showed for those who opted in, as it were. However, it should be obvious that those chests are not there for the benefit of the player, but rather for the benefit of Ubisoft. They wish to push people into using the companion app, which is also monetized, by the way. Furthermore, they also with to drive people to use their Initiates website, which is genuinely a good added value website, in my opinion. It is, however, sadly completely broken and nonfunctional at the moment. It had been in open alpha for quite some time, but was taken down a few months back, in order to facilitate an update for the launch of Unity. The redesign has sadly broken everything.

I agree 100% with this sentiment. I have been actively avoiding trailers for Dragon Age: Inquisition and my husband sends me a link last night to unlock some in game items. Cool! Well, the link makes you sit through the trailers (ugh) so I use the skip button hoping that I can see as little as possible and maybe get to the unlock items portion of the site. Nope, you have to rewatch the trailer again and click on stuff as the trailer plays. Click on three things in the three trailers, so 9 total, then you get to watch a 4th trailer. Then rewatch that trailer again and play another mini-game where you scrub through a small portion of the thing until the picture of the weapon pops up.

This is so annoying, especially when compared to how you could get bonus items in the previous games. They had neat online flash games and facebook games that actually required some thought and didn't spoil portions of the game since they were tangential stories created solely to create some excitement surrounding the release. Why did they stop doing that? I know why (time, money) but still.

I don't mind playing a facebook or flash game to get items, even if the game is kind of silly, but just watching trailers a ton of times is borderline sadistic, especially when I have been actively trying to avoid any spoilers/information about the game. But I like having cool stuff in the game and when it comes to RPGs I tend to be a completionist, so that makes me want to go against my initial reaction.

Chests and money are so inconsequential in Assassin's Creed games that I have a hard time finding this gross at all. Just don't engage with it? It's honestly not difficult. Sure, it would be better if they hadn't done it, but the fact that they did is hardly worthy burning Ubisoft HQ down over.

Unity has a lot of problems, I just have a hard time seeing this as one. Mountains out of mole hills or whatever that saying is, you know?

I've honestly never understood why people make such a big deal about these programs. I have an app that handles passwords for me, so I don't have to remember whatever my uPlay or Origin or WB or whatever account is, I can look it up. GMail has made it incredibly easy to filter out garbage, so I'm not stingy with my email or anything. uPlay and Origin (and GoG as well) in particular make great fail-safes in case something were to ever happen to Steam, at least I'd still have SOME games collected.

Sure, it's not FUN to log into a game with whatever account, but I don't really see it as a great evil that must be rallied against. If anything, it's more worth a chuckle that any of these developers think they can compete with what Steam offers. And, in the future, when EA Access and similar programs expand, there will be plenty more games to play as the developers fight tooth and nail for our attention. Sounds good to me.

Steam has first mover advantage over the other online stores. However, the other stores have seen the mistakes made by the Steam service and as a result should have had an easy blueprint and shortcut to avoid those same mistakes...

Except for the fact that they didn't avoid those mistakes (and made some spectacular ones of their own).

I can only think of another major player that is as well liked as Steam, which is GOG. They differentiate meaningfully from Steam and offer a vastly different experience, all the while not being complete assholes. Origin and uPlay are mere clones that at worst outright annoy and hinder, at best they're just redundant.

I'd like to see Ubisoft win the next Consumerist "Worst Company" award, simply so they get the message that people are taking notice of the obnoxious shit they do. Embargoes that extend past the release of a game? New and spectacular ways of integrating microtransactions? Forcing uPlay on you like never before? Tying in-game content to an increasingly byzantine set of external apps and websites?

And between AC Unity and Watch_Dogs, they arguably have two nominees for most disappointing game of the year.

Finding all these nasty things in Unity, has made me scared to pick up Far Cry 4 till I hear user impressions.

I already had a Uplay account, so linking it was not a big deal. Opened my first blue chest and it was an outfit. Neat. Go to open another blue chest, and I had to be a certain level. Alright, done with that.

Gold chests are the Initiate chest, which take into account previously played Assassins creed games. Well I have played them all, and beaten them all and I am still level 1. I checked Uplay, and sure enough they are all there. Alright, done with that too.

Uplay rewards. "Hey you unlocked XYZ!" I go over to the Uplay tab to unlock the outfit or whatever.."Cannot talk to Uplay servers" I tried this half a dozen times over the course of beating the game, and no luck. Alright done with that as well.

I'm with Patrick in that I am glad the game is over, because now I don't need to play it anymore. Which is unfortunate, because despite all the bugs, shitty changes to the combat, micro-transactions and second screen nonsense I really enjoyed the protagonist and the story/setting.

I went "how about.. no?" to Ubisoft over a year ago and I'm still alive. Maybe even stronger than ever! I had one accidental purchase of their WW1 artsy game though - I forgot they were the ones making it.

I read somewhere that during Unity's launch week meltdown, UPlay was also broken and when you clicked "Buy a Game" in UPlay it would just dump you to Steam instead of load up the Ubisoft store.

Talk about mixed messages.

Fantastic article Patrick!

Pointing out an error in the article:
"While I'be basically railed on Uplay" is in the three-line paragraph just above the Steve Kim/Fobwashed tweet.

This in game - out of game content also appears in Halo: MCC

When you try to access the terminals in halo 1 (maybe even later games) for your achievements, I'm pretty sure you have to actually watch the clips to the end to get your gamerscore. However instead of running from the game file in game you are forcibly taken to the microsoft store page for 'Halo channel' where you have to download this app in order to watch content which was possibly on disc but later blocked and redirected to some halo video streaming site for marketing purposes.

This totally annoyed me, since i was playing co-op and downloading the app and then trying to come back to game caused my game to lock up. My friend and I were both kicked from our game because i counted as disconnected and we lost all save progress since co-op doesn't save on exit.

This forceful downloading is dirrrrrrrty.

I bought this yesterday:

No Caption Provided

There's "exclusive content" in this shaving cream. I'd have to double check, but 3 guesses how you get that content.

@kerafyrm:

Who cares? A lot of people, the people who've given the issue some thought and don't like corporate interest pooping on them. You should have more self respect. Here's your path to englightenment:

What Ubisoft is doing is bad because it breaks the illusion of the game experience. A piece of art is supposed to draw you into the illusion of being a real place, like a book or a movie. Being constantly reminded about real world stuff that is outside the game is a deliberate act of sabotage to the world they have tried to create. That's one reason why it's bad. You wouldn't get Martin Scorsese appearing 20 minutes into his movie to remind you about a web page that contains some background info on the characters.

Another reason is it's inconvenient. Instead of being able to do the game stuff in the game, you have to leave the game to do stuff for the game. That's just plain old bad design.

Third reason it's bad: There's absolutely no point in any of this. There is no benefit to the consumer/player at all. It's purely so Ubisoft Corporate can get your details and attempt to sell you more ethically bankrupt crap. If these tactics work, Ubisoft will push harder and harder until entire areas of the map won't be unlocked until you launch some trash on your phone and give them your home address.

And if you still don't care, fine. But it's YOU that doesn't care, lots of other people do.

Awesome article, and that image from Fobwashed is fantastic.

I wonder if Ubisoft will replace EA as America's most hated company.

Yeah, all of the chests in Unity that require all of this dumb currency from side apps/website games/whatever seem dumb. It's like, the worst possible way to do transmedia. It's one thing if you try to do a bunch of stuff that all his its own time to shine (The Animatrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and Enter the Matrix, as much as they're of varying qualities, at least shared some level of importance in explaining the full events around the second movie). As far as big transmedia experiments, that wasn't bad.

But with Assassin's Creed, the game is like, 99% of the focus, and doing a bunch of bullshit phone game and website side bullshit just to unlock a currency for some chest is dumb.
