Valve Announces Dota 2, Out Next Year

You know, the sequel to Defense of the Ancients. Kinda.

We all had our suspicions when Valve hired Icefrog, the designer and curator of the ridiculously popular Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients. And we had a pretty good idea what was coming when URL-registry-digging site SuperAnnuation pulled up a Valve trademark for a game called DOTA. But today, in a sizable online story over on Game Informer, we finally saw the confirmation: Valve Software, with the help of Icefrog, is making Dota 2, the sequel to Defense of the Ancients. Not a remake or a spiritual successor, but a "sequel" to the popular mod that Valve in no way owns. In fact, unlike DotA, it's unclear if Valve's Dota 2 is even an acronym at all, or if the game just uses the pronounced acronym as the name of its own totally identical but technically unrelated game.

(As I suggested before, it's like if Valve released a sci-fi RPG where players controlled a space knight with laser swords and spaceships that just happened to be called "Kotor.")

Gabe Newell sitter här i venten och spelar lite DotA.
But if you’ve ever played Defense of the Ancients in Warcraft III, you are going to feel immediately at home inside Valve’s proper-retail version of the game; according to the Game Informer article, Dota 2’s gameplay will be identical to its modification predecessor. You’ll still choose from the list of over 100 heroes (and all of the over 100 original heroes from the DotA mod are being brought over into Dota 2). You’ll still control a single hero in an action-RTS battle where your team will escort waves of "creeps" from your base to your opponent’s base, all the while doing battle with the enemy team’s creeps and their heroes. You’ll still use the exact same items, skill upgrades, and abilities as you did in the DotA mod. It sounds like this is DotA-ass Dota, with Valve commenting in the article that there’s a reason good design and balance elements work, and that they’re not going to muck around the formula if they don’t have to… much like a certain other high profile PC RTS released this year.

Actually, the comparison to StarCraft II seems particularly apt; Valve seems to understand that, while DotA could be an excellent and exciting game, it was brutally difficult to get started playing the game, given a lack of competent matchmaking for the mod, few in-game resources that could teach players what they need to know to succeed, and a gameplay system where the death of a single player on a team could jeopardize the entire team (leading to a community that Game Informer charitably describes as “newbie-hostile”). As a result, Valve is putting the brunt of its development effort in Dota 2 into features that will help new or beginner players practice the game and reward knowledgeable players who impart their knowledge.

Valve hopes to create the Dota
Valve hopes to create the Dota "Social Network," but with more creeps.
How is Valve going about trying to stem the tides of anger, frustration, and rampant homophobia that ruined many a DotA match? According to Game Informer, Valve’s key to making Dota 2 friendlier and more fun is a radical series of upgrades and enhancements to their Steamworks platform (Valve’s matchmaking back-end system) to create a Dota 2 community that rewards participation. Beyond offering skill-based matchmaking that will keep players matched with those of similar skill types, Dota 2’s Steamworks will be designed so that players can earn various unlocks to the game by participating in the community. Anything from presenting feedback about various elements of the game, to writing exhaustive game guides about various heroes, maps, and mechanics could help players earn points and unlock cosmetic and vanity unlocks to differentiate themselves and their profiles. According to the Game informer piece, the sky is the limit when it comes to rewarding players who contribute to the Dota 2 community.

Most exciting of all, however, is the introduction of a "Coaching" system, and it sounds like this will be exactly what you imagine it to be. Players will have the option of  being matched up with Coaches (veteran DotA players in this case) who will watch the training player as they play--literally seeing the same screen as the in-game player--and provide insight and strategy to a player over the course of a match. The coach and trainer will have a private voice chat session as well as standard text-based chat options so the two can communicate and better optimize the trainee. Those trainees will then be able to rate the coaches on their effectiveness, and good coaches will be able to access their own line of unlockable rewards.

All of this comes to Valve’s Dota sequel, which (as you might have guessed) abandons the old Warcraft III engine for Valve’s going-strong-after-seven-years Source engine. As you can see from the character renders from the Game Informer article,  the aesthetics of Dota 2 also seems to have been altered as a result of leaving the exaggerated features and bright colors of the Warcraft III engine (and popular DotA-inspired games like League of Legends), trading them in for a slightly darker, more realistic look.

You can read the Game Informer article for some more insight into the Dota design process (as well as see multiple members of the Valve team refer to Icefrog as “one of the smartest designers we’ve ever hired”). However, your enjoyment of  Dota 2 will boil down to one question that you need to answer; do you already like Defense of The Ancients? If you said no, than Valve hopes it’s because of the game’s difficulty curve, and that better matchmaking and an active social community will ease you into the game (along with Valve’s reputation for releasing quality software). If you already like DotA, however, then Dota 2 looks to be exactly the kind of game you expect--even if it's not technically related to the original mod--when it’s released next year on the PC and Mac.

It looks like the "2" is derived mainly from overhauling everything but the basic game mechanics itself, which seems like a good idea for it's player base.  They seem to be putting enough work into this game to merit a full sequel, but the general feeling of this thread seems against that.  I dunno, there seems to be a whole lot of DOTA drama that I'm unaware of that has PC veterans riled up, but all I see are great ideas on how to make a game better.

What drama and where? Only thing I've seen is a troll pretending to work for Valve in some blog.

A whole crap-ton of people are angry this isn't Episode Three. To all of you people, I say this:

Have faith.

Valve has assured us that they have three surprises in store for us (I forget where exactly, but I'm pretty sure it was an interview with PC Gamer).

The first was the Team Fortress 2 Mann-conomy.

This, Dota 2, was the second.

The third has yet to be revealed. Perhaps Episode Three will be Surprise No. 3?

If that turns out to not be the case, and Episode Three maintains its status as Biggest Piece of Vaporware Since 2007, I won't lose any sleep. Despite the abysmal cash shop in TF2, I still have faith in Valve's ability to deliver The Shit We Want.

I really like how Valve is taking the reigns on Mac gaming, and all platforms so to speak. Sort of like no one misses out.

@Teran:
In LoL, if you leave a game in progress, you can't join another game until the one you left is over, so you can't just switch into another one at your will (you could go do something else though, like read a book, I guess). It's also just a dick move to make a 5 v 5 into a 5 v 4, and that's always worse than just flaming the chatbox or something. Leaving also hurts your ladder ranking, if you're into that sort of thing.

What I meant was that it's not like CS, where, if you join a server with annoying players, you can just pop out and be on another server in 5 seconds. The impact of jerkish behavior is  lessened in games with multiplayer setups like that.

<tangent> I wonder if anyone has ever been sued for behavior in a multiplayer game. Like griefing or whatever. It wouldn't surprise me, give our legal system. </tangent>

I really just hate that they are calling it DOTA 2. That is such a stupid name especially because it is consider to be a sub-genre of strategy game instead of the actual name of a game. Even if you dont consider it a sub-genre, there still was never an actual game named DoTA, just a mod, so having a DoTA 2 is just plain silly. I just thinks it's really weird, especially since it was originally a mod for a game that Valve doesnt own. I played LoL in the beta, and would really like to get into a game like that, I am just not so sure because it is a time suck and such. I havnt played HoN yet but hope to someday. Right now though, its so hard to find time to play anything with so much Halo Reach and Starcraft II going on. Add another game like this to my list and I wont have to play another game ever. Also, I wonder if this is like fall next year, or spring/summer next year, or is it one of those games that will get pushed into 2012. Either way I will most likely be excited for this game when it comes out.

I see your point, my post looked more adversarial than I intended.

I know (and love) how the LoL system works, I've played it for quite some time.  There are some flaws in it though.  The 15 minute punishment is purely short term punishment and because LoL is free to play people can have numerous accounts.  The other main flaw is that often people who rage quit are ready for a break anyways so they spend the time making a sandwich or just are done of the day.  I'm not really sure this system can be improved upon without becoming a burden to all players rather than just the  rage quitters.  I'm curious, how would you improve on the system?  I'm braindead tonight and can't think of anything.

As far as law suits go that's hard to say.  To my knowledge no one has been arrested or sued for threats and insults made in game or on a social network like facebook however... there are numerous documented incidents of people being insulted and tracking down the person who made their experience miserable and kicking the crap out of them.  My favorite story happened in Mexico.  Some guy was was harassing a player in World of Warcraft and ended up causing emotional distress.  This woman's boyfriend wasn't too happy about that so he got a couple friends and tracked this guy down... broken into his house and beat him severely (though he only broke a few fingers if memory serves).  Once they were done with that they destroyed his computer and entertainment center.

Fundamentally I know those guys did something very 'wrong' but boy did that guy get what he deserved.

I was interested in this a long time ago, but with games like League of Legends out, I think that while dota will be remembered as a trendsetter, I'm just not too interested in it anymore.

Not to mention, this just sounds like a graphical update and system update for dota, while retaining the original concept of dota.  You know, like Heroes of Newerth already did.

Curious though, will they run into any legal issues with some of the obviously copyrighted characters?  It was okay when it was a mod, but having a mage character called Lina the Slayer is maybe a touch close to Lina Slayer, no?

I would be curious how they would compete against LoL when Riot offers the game absolutely free and it is a really good DOTA game. They will have to offer something really worthwhile in the endgame to get a purchase out of me.

I'm kind of disappointed here.  DotA is a game with a good idea, but a lot of flaws.  It is carrying around the baggage of 3 different designers, the limitations of the warcraft 3 engine, and player base who is too attached to the way it currently is.  If anyone could have rebuilt the DotA concept from the ground up and made something truly great, it was Valve.  It feels like Valve is ignoring all the potential to take the quick and easy road on this one.

@Draco9898: Sorry, my english is rusty this days, that's what I meant though, thank you.  They left off the Inverse, but otherwise have the same exact character...I think that's okay for a mod, but not for a commercial product.

This seems pretty interesting. I've always wanted to play DotA, but the learning curve is just a cliff face.

Hopefully Valve can pull this off, even though I'm not too sure about IceFrog...

Lina Inverse!  I hope she still has her AOE stun.

That said, anyone else foresee Acti-blizz suing them for all this?  I know none of them technically created Dota either, but it seems like the kind of thing they wouldn't just let go (Remember all the Brutal Legend and Ghostbusters stuff.)
