Valve Decided to Approve That Divekick Game

And something called Deadly Premonition, too.

No Caption Provided

In the latest string of Greenlight approvals for Steam, Valve accepted fan favorites Divekick, Deadly Premonition, and a slew of others.

The complete list is as follows:

Valve covered a wide range of games here, from crowd-backed prospects (Among the Sleep, A Hat in Time), to already released games seeking a bigger home (Rekoil, Operation Black Mesa), to the types of games one wouldn't ordinarily think needed to go down this road (Deadly Premonition).

In case you missed it, Divekick now has a release date, too: August 20. That’s for the $10 version on PlayStation 3 and Vita, which comes with the always welcomed Cross Buy support. I wouldn’t be surprised if the PC version joined that date, too. I could track Dave Lang down in Chicago and ask him? Nah.

I already watch both Endurance runs, played through the game myself, but if Deadly Premonition on PC is modable I will definitely pick it up. Just imagine what could be made or even better if some makes it a decent shooter!

@funkasaurasrex: I can't believe cook, serve, delicious hasn't been greenlit yet! I bought that game ages ago after the quick look on the dev's site but I knew it was in green light awhile ago. This game deserves to be on Steam for sure!

If you read their Greenlight page, you'll see that the devs have pretty much given up on ever being on Steam at this point. Greenlight is a horrible broken mess that's in desperate need of fixing and implementing new ideas.

I'll totally get Deadly Premonition, but yeah why hasn't The Real Texas been greenlit? Unless I missed that.

Good news, decent list. Valve loves their automation, seemingly to a fault when Greenlight is concerned, so the return of some aspect of curation over these past few months is most welcome. Especially when a game is on the cusp of release like DiveKick - to not have to focus time and energy into wrangling up internet votes with no guarantee it'll make top 10 by August (or at all) sounds like a big relief.

Also happy to see some longtime submissions stuck in Greenlight hell on there, another good sign. Gives hope for those that probably have given up by now, even if they deserve to be on Steam from a quality standpoint. Greenlight may still be experimental, obtuse and a pain in the ass to wade through, but at least they're being flexible with rules that don't work in practice.

I'm sorry guys, but Deadly Premonition is a garbage game. I watched the Endurance Run because of the GB crew - their commentary.

So you watching someone play a game instantly gives you enough information to know right away if your going to like the game or not?! If thats the way you decide on which games you buy your probably missing out on a lot of classics. Seems like you'd be better putting your time to a good movie then watching endurance runs.

Your opinions are wrong and morally abhorrent. Be ashamed.

In other news, looks like I'm buying two copies of Divekick.

I APPRECIATE DEADLY PREMONITION AND ITS QUIRKY NATURE, so much I use caps. Also I'll be buying it for the 3rd time even if I've never opened the 360 or PS3 copy.

I appreciate games bold enough to be quirky, but Deadly Premonition looked like a garbage game from a mechanical and overall-polish perspective. When they weren't detective-ing it up, it just looked to be a really bad, sloppy 3rd person shooter.

Yikes. Meanwhile, iOS gamers get constant updates and hilarious patch notes. TALK ABOUT A BUMMER.

Black Mesa? Isn't that a fan made Half-Life remake? How could they sell that?

Operation Black Mesa is a different thing, seemingly. A Source remake of Opposing Force.

If what you say is true, I would be thrilled. Besides it being surprisingly good Half Life game, It had one of the best Alien concepts I remember, those tall beings that used another creature as a range weapon. They fought well and quite deadly, but mostly the art design for both was good.

^__^ Among the Sleep. Really, looking forward to that.

Still bums me out that Depression Quest never made it through.

It's a browser game that I couldn't really imagine being a paid-for downloadable game.

The Endurance Runs were cute and funny and all, but in all honesty it was a really crappy way to show off the game. There's 10x more to it than what they ever got into, watching Supergreatfriend's LP really proved that.

Anyway, I don't get this Greenlight thing. Why is it such a big deal to get a game published on Steam? Shouldn't be such a hassle for a completed game to be on steam.

Cause they don't want total trash on their service. The idea is to let the community figure out what they want. That said a game like divekick shouldn't have been held out for this long.

Yet shit like WarZ/Infestation gets past greenlight.

Yep, if that's what steam is trying to do they're too late. They totally blew their credibility to let War Z be sold for money, then when the shit storm came down, let them change the name and keep selling it.

I don't like greenlight. Democracy just doesn't work.

Wait, Infestation is just War Z under a different name? Holy shit, how were they able to get away with that?

Should be clarified that The War Z wasn't voted through Greenlight, it could be released apparently even without any certification process because the publisher already had a game on Steam (I think it was War Inc., but I don't exactly remember, when they republished War Z as Infestation: Survivor Stories they changed the name of the developer and publisher companies).

The weird thing now is that it seems like some developers that already have games on Steam need to go through Greenlight to get released, which doesn't quite make sense either.

Indeed. Soldak's excellent Drox Operative looks like it will languish in Greenlight limbo forever now, despite that developer having two well-received games on Steam already (Din's Curse and Depths of Peril). Valve should just go back to proper curation. It's not like they can't afford to hire people to do that.

Divekick also known as the very definition of a joke going too far. #fuckkeits

I can't tell if people are genuinely excited or ironically excited for that game anymore. Jeff saying people were 'really good' at the game at Evo made me scratch my head. Was he joking or not? I CANNOT TELL. The game has the depth of a puddle and is funny, but people expecting anything more than that...well I don't know what to tell you.

@sooty: That's the best part of the game: It looks like a joke in its simplicity, but still contains the precious balance between patience and timing that all fighting games rely on.

@sooty: People like Divekick because it's a genuinely good fighting game, completely independent of the jokes. You actually just don't understand how it works.

The exciting parts of fighting games at a high level of play are the footsies and the mindgames and the other things that are all about positioning, timing, patience, and predicting your opponent. Divekick is interesting and exciting because it lets people play with those elements without first having to devote hours upon hours to practicing combos or studying character and move properties.

Man greenlight is just fine. They're still working on improvements or it mind, but good stuff still didn't get through under the old manual curation system.

It still kind of sickens me that proper publishers that put games in boxes like DTP have to go through greenlight because Valve are too haughty to deal with product anymore. God forbid that, as a catalogue, they should spend time reviewing the products themselves.
