Welcome to Shocktober 2013

There are 31 days in October, and you might as well fill 'em with blood, gore, and monsters. Warning: lots of YouTube videos within!

It's that time again. October has arrived, and Shocktober has begun.

It blows my mind how many people haven't seen Trick 'r Treat. Please fix that! The best horror anthology since...Creepshow?
It blows my mind how many people haven't seen Trick 'r Treat. Please fix that! The best horror anthology since...Creepshow?

Shocktober isn't new in the Klepek family. My wife and I have been compiling lists of horror for the season of the witch for years, even holding off on watching some in hopes of making October's treats that much sweeter. We try to run the gamut--old, new, funny, scary.

The goal is to have a list of 31 horror movies but not feel constrained by the list. We have never actually watched 31 movies, and I don't expect that will change this year, either. Plus, horror is about mood. Some nights, you want ghosts. Other nights, you want unbridled revenge. Follow your cinematic bloodlust, friend, and it will keep you up at night.

Some things to remember about this list. This is my list, which means it's not a "best horror movies of all-time" list, and with the rare exception of Hellraiser and Trick 'r Treat, these are all movies I haven't seen yet. Most of these can be easily obtained by loading up Amazon, iTunes, or Netflix, and I'd recommend services like CanIStreamIt? to determine what's the best way to track them down on the devices you own. A few of the movies are theater-bound, and have been appropriately noted and listed on or after their theatrical date.

But this isn't a movie site, and there's plenty more planned for this month. Interviews, features, livestreams, and whatever madness pops into my head. I've wanted a reason to play Condemned: Criminal Origins again.

Please share your experiences in the comments! I'll probably file a few stories throughout the month, making notes and reacting to some of the movies. My wife will be gone for a good portion of the month, so I'm not sure how many we'll be getting in, but lord knows we'll try. And if you have any other suggestions? Have at me.

There's always next year.

In 2011 I did (or attempted) something similar only in December.

Called it 'Nightmare Before, During and After Christmas'. Got through 20 movies instead of the planned 31, but it was good fun and a great writing exercise. I have them on my tumblr somewhere still.

I watched and wrote about

  • Black Christmas (original)
  • Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
  • The Collector
  • The House of the Devil
  • Sauna (also known as Evil Rising for some reason)
  • Stake Land
  • Eight Legged Freaks
  • Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
  • Los Cronocrimenes (Timecrimes)
  • Tesis (Thesis)
  • Creep
  • The Devil's Backbone
  • Splinter
  • Thirst
  • Stir of Echoes
  • The Haunting (original, thank god)
  • House on Haunted Hill (remake because it's hilarious)
  • April Fool's Day
  • Ravenous
  • Irreversible

Looking forward to hearing what you think about your selection! Videodrome is still a fantastic bit of film making.

the original maniac is an interesting film. Effects work by Tom Savini are amazing, better then Scanners actually, but it's written and producted by Joe Spinell, a lesser known character actor who pours a lot of passion to the film that it's riviting. The film could easily be forgotten and I'm afraid the remake kinda looses the appeal of the original.

Been doing shocktober with friends, man you need more 70s and 80s horror movies, because this looks like your scrapping from netflix. Here's a recomendation, Class of 1984, revenge film that's a bit of a satire it's pretty rad.

@patrickklepek Have you watched Inside (À I'intérieur)? One of the most disturbing movies I've ever watched - plus, it's French. Seriously, just go dig into French horror movies and you'll never want to watch a "normal" horror movie again.

There's also this one - Martyrs ...also quite fucked up.

Was last night's Spookin' not archived? Being European, I was just about dead at 3:30 (like 40 minutes before it started) and had to punch out, thinking I'd watch it today.

Worth checking out 'Who Can Kill a Child?' instead of 'Come Out And Play'. The original is a far superior film and the latter is from a terrible attention seeking prat of a director. Also, 'I Spit on Your Grave 2' is a piece of unpleasant shit, and not in a good way.

Such similar taste to me generally though. Dead End such a highlight out of nowhere.

John Dies at the End is awesome!!! I don't really think of it as a Horror movie but I guess it has some Horror themes. I'll have to add that to my list of movies to watch this Halloween season because it's a good excuse to watch that movie again.

Wow, this needs to become a regular feature. There are plenty of these movies that look fantastic and, of which, I have never seen. Maniac, Escape from Tomorrow (read the wiki page; fascinating), and American Mary all seem really interesting. Most of the rest I have already seen. I'm cautiously interested in the re-re-make of Carrie. I love how the trailer totally spoiled the plot of the entire movie because....c'mon.

John Dies at the End was really, really bad. I might be a bit biased because I read the book, but had I not I would've been completely lost watching the movie. Hell, even with reading the book I was still confused. They leave out all the best bits from the book and just jump around without explaining anything. Which is really bad because even for comedy-horror the book had some really creepy parts and all of that gets left out of the movie.

Yeah... I was really disappointed considering I was very much looking forward to it. I will say one good thing though, the casting was pretty dead-on aside from a couple characters.

Fuck yeah, Ghostwatch!
Also, well done on Dead End. Even if it weren't for Lin Shaye (who is fantastic in this), it would still be a great one.

Nothing terrifying about Mandy Lane (except maybe how terrifyingly bland it is), if I'd have to comment on something on that list. Rest are decent fun/never heard of.

@patrickklepek: I'm gonna keep hassling you till you watch it P-Dawg. It's been two years now!

No Caption Provided

Oh shit, I missed that you HAVE actually mentioned it in your thing.

Well done.

Watch it on the correct night, on a CRT TV, don't read or watch anything more about it. And imagine you are seeing this for the first and only time it was ever broadcast. In Britain. In 1992.

@jadegl: I know also what I love about it (looking back at it as someone interested in TV Productions) is the fact the BBC took a massive risk getting well know TV personalities of the time to take part in it.

I watched "Would You Rather" and it's not a particularly good film. Even though the premise of the movie doesn't make any sense, I don't really hold that against it. The Cube's premise is fairly ridiculous, but that movie is fantastic. Where this movie fails is with the acting, the direction and the completely unbelievable string of deaths.

The acting from Jeffery Combs is clearly the best in the film (despite the directing for his role being pretty lacklustre) and Enver Gjokaj stands out as well. But, every other performance is a mess. Sasha Grey is awful, as you might expect, and each other character acts in such a flat, unbelievable manner, that it's difficult to take the movie seriously.

But if you know anything about anatomy or medicine, the death scenes are extremely difficult to understand.

SPOILERS: a woman dies from an ice pick to the leg, but where she's stabbed isn't close to the major arteries or veins in the leg, and there's barely any blood. One character is killed through being hit with a sjambok. Though you could certainly kill someone with it, you'd have to break their back, not simply make them bleed. All of his wounds look superficial. Another character dies of a heart attack after having his fingers blown off. While that makes some sense, he dies almost instantly (that's not really how heart attacks work).

Anyway, point being, the premise is decent, and I found myself thinking really hard about what my strategy would be to survive, but at the end of the day, it was a boring film. I'd give it a 2 out of 5.

Hellraiser is my favorite horror film simply because it was the first that I ever saw unedited at the age or 6.

I have a group of like-minded horror fanatics, and we have a challenge every October: Watch 31 horror films, and at least 16 of them need to be first time viewings. It's great fun and a good chance to find those hidden gems no one would have ever heard of.
