Wii U Arrives in United States on November 18

The date is set, prices are in ($299, $349), new games have been announced (Bayonetta 2, Black Ops 2), and the road to Wii U's launch has begun.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo of America has announced a release date for Wii U in the United States, and it's November 18. It doesn't launch in Japan until December 8, but Nintendo launched the original Wii first outside of Japan, too.

There are two sets. The basic set includes a Wii U, Game Pad, Game Pad charging cable, AC adaptor, HDMI cable, sensor bar and 8GB of memory. The "deluxe" set also includes 32GB of memory, a Game Pad charging cable, Game Pad cradle, a copy of NintendoLand, and enrollment in a premium service on Nintendo Direct, where you earn points for each purchase and can redeem them later for other purchases.

The big question? Price. It's $299 for the basic set, and $349 for the deluxe set.

As for big game announcements, Nintendo is publishing (funding?) Bayonetta 2 with Platinum Games, Monolith Soft is making a new game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is coming to the platform, and there's a new Monster Hunter. Well, "new." Monster Hunter Ultimate (Monster Hunter Tri G U in Japan) is based on the 3DS game, and the save data will be interchangeable between the two platforms. It's available at launch in Japan, and March everywhere else.

Project P-100, also from Platinum Games, was easily one of the most exciting Wii U games at E3, and that's been renamed The Wonderful 101. Spoiler: still looks awesome. Epic Mickey 2 will also be receiving a Wii U upgrade, and Activision made the clutch announcement of Skylanders Giants. Nintendo didn't discuss the NFC features baked into the Game Pad, though, so one might expect that will still have a separate device to scan the characters in.

Nintendo broke down the hilariously large "launch window" for Wii U, as well: November 18 until the end of March. Besides New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand, the company wasn't confirming release dates, but since Pikmin 3 isn't coming out until next spring in Japan, I wouldn't expect it over here this year, either.

No Caption Provided

In America, Nintendo spent the most time going over its big media initiative, Nintendo TVii. It aggregates content services--Amazon, Hulu Plus, etc.--and allows users to search, track, purchase, and play content from them on the Game Pad and the TV. There's a neat dynamic between the Game Pad and TV, too. The Game Pad takes screen captures of what's happening on TV, and allows users to comment and share on Facebook and Twitter. You also have access to your DVR through the Game Pad, though right now, that seems to mean TiVO-only devices.

Nintendo TVii launches alongside the device this year, but only in the United States and Canada.

The company also unveiled a strange interface for Nintendo TVii. Maybe it'll make more sense in our hands?

No Caption Provided

Over in Japan, there were some big announcements that should guarantee some folks on day one (like, say, 8-4). In addition to an even more deluxe package that comes with a Pro controller and a copy of Monster Hunter Ultimate, anyone who buys the premium version of the console also gains an invite to the upcoming beta for Dragon Quest X.

also how many of the people complaining about the price were ever going to buy one anyway? just sounds like they're trying to reinforce the "downfall" of nintendo.

Man, I was really thinking a $250 price point would have been the sweet spot. I mean, $299 isn't too far off, but now it's not *as* competitive a deal compared to current gen consoles - especially for the large crowd who realizes we'll probably be seeing some bigger and 'better' entries from Microsoft and Sony next year. Nintendo used to be the main stream guys, this system seems a little too niche. The circumstances that are required for there to be a solid market for this are somewhat specific. I wish them well though, I'd fucking hate to see another one of my childhood favorites bite it.

The price point is perfect. Folks using that as a talking point to try to bring down the hype of the system are really, really reaching. It blows my mind that people go so far out of their way to take a dump on a product for the most juvenile of reasons.

I am very interested in the media streaming capabilities of the system. The TVii looks pretty cutting edge compared to the troublesome interface and experiences found on the PS3 and Xbox 360. I am still probably not going to buy one day one, but it is now on my radar.

Pretty reasonable price, Nintendo seldom loses money on hardware. The limitation will be redressed in revamp designs, as in Wii U+ or something similar, obviously with larger capacity. But 32GB is fine if just for saves and in flash, no moving parts. My only worry is the breadth of software support, but the exclusives look good, need to release them within months of launch and not miss this year's holiday season.

How are people so excited for a system that will have no online component other than to stream movies and eshop games. It's freakin 2012 Nintendo. I jokingly commented to my wife about the new Wii coming out and she said that she wasn't even interested, and this was the women who bought a 3DS on a whim. When Nintendo decides to join the internet age I might consider buying the WiiU, but after owning a Wii and never playing it what's the purpose or spending another $400 or so?

What the hell are you talking about, "no online component"?

My financial situation (and being in college with little to no spare time) says I'm not buying a Wii U, and considering how little use I had with my Wii I'm really not that bothered.

I do hope early buyers are happy with their purchase though, and it will be interesting for sure to see how things go for Nintendo with this thing. The pessimistic side of me says "good luck...", but my optimistic side says "good luck!".

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but the regular edition does NOT come with a Game Pad charging cable? Meaning if I want to charge my Game Pad (I know, crazy, why would I want to do that) I'd have to go out and buy an extra accessory?

Price is important to me, and while I'm not buying the WiiU due to lack of games I think the price point they have is quite reasonable. Here is a graph comparing the consoles prices to inflation over the years, and you'll see Nintendo has occupied the lowest end for as long as they've been in business. That's a big deal, they set the floor. So as Ryan said, if you're complaining about this price, I got some bad news for you when the new Xbox and Playstation are released...

Man I hope Bayonetta 2 is "exclusive" the same way RE4 was a game cube "exclusive" (along with most of the rest of the camcom 5). I really want to play it, give no fucks about other wii u titles, and am certainly not going to buy one.

Yeah, I hope so too. Exclusive sequels are stupid, especially since I doubt Bayonetta 2 will utilize the controller the way Rayman Legends does.

A Bayonetta 2 that you'll never play, or no Bayonetta 2 period. You make the choice on what's better. Those are the two only actual choices because no one else was going to publish it.

Any information on:

3DS integration? Using it as a controller, etc.

Downloadable games: Will my WiiWare and Virtual Console games be transferrable? Maybe even 3DS eshop games? What about adding Gamecube games to the virtual console.

Backwards compatible with Wii games?

Games I'm waiting for: Mario Galaxy(Universe?), Metroid Prime, F-Zero.

It's to much for what you get, at least in my opinion. The WiiU is playing catch up from a generation behind everyone else, and upon the release of the next XBox and Playstation console it'll be a certifiable leap behind yet again. It seems more like a place holder of a console than a true console in my eyes.

Fuck it though. I'll get it just for the next Mario game. That loveable Italian could talk me into selling a kidney on the black market.

If neither Pikmin 3 nor Wonderful 101 is out at launch, I have no need to pick one up this year.

That said, good job on not screwing up the price point, though is the non-premium Wii U gamepad just battery-powered?

lol Well what I meant was that it is more expensive than the "current" PS3 price, which I consider as very expensive, which is the reason why I did not get my PS3 on the launch day(700 dollars??!!!). I mean, think about it. Wii U is the most expensive console NOW. I'm pretty sure it will be different next year when the next PS and XBOX come out but I think it is a ballsy move for Nintendo to come out and put the most expensive price tag on a console.

MS still puts out $400 360 bundles.

uummm... no, I don't think so Nintendo.

Too much cash for too little, especially if I fancied having a second of your tablet controllers for family fun times. I'm guessing that would 'up' the price for the deluxe to the $500 mark... which is probably what us in the UK will be paying without the extra controller.

NEVER!

I predict that in 2010 the Xbox 1440 (I had to think about that for a couple of seconds), the PlayStation 5 and the Wii U Y launch window will be from Nov 2010 to Oct 2011.

The Deluxe is such a joke! It should have been packed with the Contrller Pro not a bit of internal memory and some pieces of plastic, very pathetic not worth it, plus the throwaway shovelware it comes with that should just be standard anyway.

Apparently there isn't any forcefeedback in the Controller Pro so thats great! Back to the dark ages on that one, I don't buy games for forcefeedback(well except for RezHD AMIRIGHT) but it does add to the experience to have it.

Well yes there was a 3G model for $300 but if you look at the majority of the units sold they were the Wi-fi $250 version. Add $100 for a 32GB card and you are looking at the cost of the premium WiiU. Same amount of storage as well except it's a console.

The Wii was such a hit for Nintendo because of the relatively inexpensive price and the very innovative controls (at the time) which led to the casual crowd getting on board. While the U may still be relatively inexpensive, it doesn't have any other real "hook" other than being new. The weird tablet control just seems completely unnecessary, like the Kinect. Unless the games lineup (lackluster so far) can get people on board, I don't see the system selling super great. Time will tell, I guess.

And now everybody seems to cry "Why are there 3rd party exklusives Nin? I never wanted to buy your console anyways!"

Gaming. Serious business. Anyway, I liked what I saw. I probably buy the Premium Version if I get it for 300€

No, the problem is that they have one third party exclusive that people want to play and no other reason to buy the system.

The Vita says hello.
