Wii U Developments Kits Reportedly Underclocked, Games Pulled from E3

The original plan for E3 may have included many more Wii U games.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo held back publishers from showing some in-development Wii U games during E3, according to a report issued by Hit Detection, the game consulting firm founded by former Newsweek journalist N'Gai Croal.

The only third-party Wii U game playable at E3 was Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Online. Ubisoft also showed Killer Freaks from Outer Space, and there was a highlight reel showing during Nintendo's press conference, later revealed to have been games running on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 hardware.

"Developers have underclocked development kits, and worked hard to deliver titles running on that hardware to demonstrate live at E3," reads the report. "However, due to titles not looking much better than what is currently available on Xbox 360 and the PS3, Nintendo decided late in the game to not show those titles and focus instead on tech demos."

Ghost Recon Online was the only "game" shown for Wii U. Everything Nintendo was declared experimental, albeit with the caveat that some or all could actually turn into proper games.

It's unclear whether Nintendo's alleged decision to hold back games that wouldn't show better than existing releases suggests Wii U is, in fact, may be more powerful than both. Nintendo hasn't released proper specifications for Wii U, as has been standard operating procedure for the company for years, instead focusing on what's possible, not the literal guts inside the box.

There is no reality to this statement.  They've been the most powerful console out 3/5 gens they've participated in and where pretty much equal in another.  Being less powerful 1 out of 5 times =/ = generally.  If anything the word to use should be rarely.

I think they haven't decided the final specs yet and even when they do they won't tell us what they are.

So they couldn't show games in progress because they didn't look better than PS3 and 360,
but they could show game videos from those systems?  Doesn't compute!

They wanted to demonstrate that this console is gonna have all the ports/3rd party support that was missing on the Wii.

Alright, that computes better! Brain soothed.

The specs are final and are on e3.nintendo.com. The only thing not final is the design and quality of the buttons and plastic in the controller and whether or not the SDK will support multiple WiiU controllers.

No memory, GPU or CPU specs, so really, not proper specs.

But the specs are final, they just chose not to release any numbers because its proprietary and can only theoretically be compared to other systems.

I read somewhere that developers are saying the Wii U is actually 50% more powerful than the 360 and PS3.  I'm not exactly sure how you measure "power" in this case (and Kanye West has been no help at all).  I'm not sure if that means CPU or graphics or both.

But my point is all they've said is "it has a multi-core CPU" which means basically nothing at this point. All they've basically said is "yes, this machine has functioning components" which to me is not the same as releasing specs. Sure, the numbers don't really mean anything without software, but the point is that right now there is no point for comparison.

No one console should have all that power.

nintendo always goes for the cheap solution. remember the power glove? what could have been the most revolutionary idea of gaming, now is a joke. Virtual boy, big plans big failure. Nintendo will most likely change some of the internals (for the worst) to save money on cooling fans and this will be just as bland as milk toast, just like the original wii.

which is a shame, because just once I would like for Nintendo to stand on top as a leader this generation. And not to be known as the shovelware system.

Now I expect the Wii-U-Box to have a 'turbo' button.
Still the primary development platform is the X360. No question that it should look the same on Wii-U.

Your whole statement is pointless, considering that I wasn't referring to how powerful their console is. I'm referring to the fact that it took them years before they even realized that their new systems needed online gaming. Not to mention that they only recently developed a system that was capable of outputting HD video.

@damnboyadvance:  Everything you listed really came to life in the one gen that they were slower.  Again, I'll ask how is 1 out of 5 considered generally?

Alright, they have been slow with technology forabout the past 5-10 years. What difference does it make? They're still behind right now.

@damnboyadvance: The Gamecube was not inferior tech compared to the PS2.  Not sure where you're getting that from.  Anyways, I'll give you that they are usually behind... when they aren't ahead.... which is rare.

I think too many people's knowledge of Nintendo starts and ends with the Wii.

@damnboyadvance: Yes it's rare.  This is their 5th console gen and the first time they're way behind the competition.  1 out 5 is not generally.

Are you being intentionally thick?

Though actually, the NES was inferior to the SMS as well...but it was kind of irrelevant.

Why give your development partners underclocked hardware in the first place?

Alright, I'll give you that. But they could very well be headed down that path.

So the real specs don't leak out and cause internet shitstorms.
