Will There Be A Call Of Duty MMO?

Bobby Kotick would like there to be, from the looks of things.

If you thought Activision would have chilled out on the idea of an MMO-like structure for Call of Duty beyond CEO Bobby Kotick's statements to that effect in June, think again. In a fresher interview with the Financial Times, Kotick spoke to the fact again that Activision receives nothing in return for people playing Call of Duty over Xbox Live, going so far as to say that his company's war games are the reason around 60-percent of subscribers have subscribed to Live.

"We’ve heard that 60 per cent of [Microsoft’s] subscribers are principally on Live because of Call of Duty,” Kotick told FT. “We don’t really participate financially in that income stream. We would really like to be able to provide much more value to those millions of players playing on Live, but it’s not our network."

As Kotaku notes, Activision Blizzard knows full well the value of an MMO structure, considering that they're owners of World of Warcraft, the most successful MMO to date.

== TEASER ==Rumors and surveys indicating an MMO structure is coming to Call of Duty have been circulating since the dawn of man. Kotick himself has stated his desire to flip the system on numerous occasions. In June, in a conversation with The Wall Street Journal, Kotick didn't hold back on the subject.

"I would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow," Kotick said. "When you think about what the audience's interests are and how you could really satisfy bigger audiences with more inspired, creative opportunities, I would love to see us have an online Call of Duty world. I think our players would just have so much of a more compelling experience."

He said "audiences are clamoring" for the system, which I would assume they would be if Activision actually worked in value within the structure.

Here's a funny idea: perhaps this Call of Duty MMO--which may or may not ever happen--will be dropped onto a straight-to-TV PC.

Kotick is still stuck on the idea of plug-and-play TV PC devices, or I suppose, mini-consoles. According to Kotick, Activision is primed to "aggressively support" Dell and HP in their endeavor to connect PCs to TVs. Dropping games on these is a hell of a go-around, for sure, but it's one Kotick likes. Using these boxes would kick the need to rely on Xbox Live, or even conventional digital distribution. Plus, it could expand the player base.

"We have always been platform agnostic,” Kotick told FT. “[Consoles] do a very good job of supporting the gamer. If we are going to broaden our audiences, we are going to need to have other devices.”

I'm not sure if we'll ever see a Call of Duty MMO. But I am pretty sure we won't see one on this generation of consoles--unless, of course, every publisher begins clamoring for a piece of the money pie from subscription-based networks held by a lone publisher.

How fucking greedy. Just because you don't get ALL the money doesn't mean you should abandon partnerships altogether.

A first person shooter MMO with the quality of Call of Duty could be amazing. I'm just not sure if the idea I have in my head is one that will be possible for some time.

I totally want to pay $15 a month to have my sexuality and my mother's sexual history brought into question by 9-year-olds after they shoot me in the back from across the map.  That sounds like a blast, Activision.  Where can I sign up?

Wouldn't it be better just to add dedicated servers to MW? You can implement a sort of "persisent world" and an online storyline without needing an MMO. Put dedicated servers and the ability to choose a side and stick to it and you're ready to go.

Does COD with a monthly subscription really qualify as an MMO? I don't think so. Kotick is just talking about capitalising on the existing Call Of Duty structure, as is his right.

You know what, every Kotick interview would be exactly the same even if, instead of answering questions, he'd just sing the theme song to the Apprentice every time.

For me, i would just go with another game than CoD if they tried to get me to pay monthly for playing. The question is, what will the larger crowd do? any answers? ^_^

I can never figure out whether he means "I want to make World of Duty" or "I just want to charge people to play regular Call of Duty".

If it's the former, then making it for PC is the obvious thing to do (WoW hasn't done too badly for them after all); if it's the latter then yeah, they either need an 'open' console or they need to carve up the profit with Microsoft and Sony somehow.  An 'open console' isn't going to happen any time soon.

TBH, I'm not sure if just trying to charge a subscription for CoD as it is now would fly, there are just too many close sub-free alternatives.

What exactly would be the gameplay mechanics behind a Call of Duty MMO?  It would just seem...weird.

This has potential to be awesome, but what he's really saying is "I think people should have to pay us to play our current multiplayer." That's how I read it, anyway.

This would flop for a number of my cynical reasons, the biggest of which being that Infinity Ward isn't anything like it was and the series is on its decline. I hope I'm wrong, though.

Unless they released content on a regular basis, ya know like a real MMO, I wouldn't give a shit out it. Why would I pay a monthly fee for a game that doesn't update or have new content?

Since when did " a new compelling experience," start to mean a "hey we found a way to trick people in to paying for something they already have."

he never said anything about a MMO, what he's saying is that he would rather have the game being playable exclusively on a Activision network then over Live or the PSN.

In other worlds, he want's to charge all players(who already paid in full for the game) to play online,  man I wish this guy would just die, one less useless suit in the world.

So he wants to take a genre that is not MMO friendly as proven time and time again.  Below is a list of MMOs that have tried. How many of these are you currently playing, and will keep playing for as long as you have played Call of Duty 4.  These are the list of shooters that have a traditional subscription model.

Tabula Rasa (trick question, its closed)
PlanetSide (6 servers are merged down to 1 because of low population and interest)
APB (Lag-tastic and full of unbalance, paid subscription is optional)
GlobalAgenda (no longer counts, subscription model was abandoned)

With a little extra research I found.
NeoCron (not a clue its status, is it even still running? Was it subscription based?)

I didn't waste time to list CrimeCraft or other free FPS.
GlobalAgenda (no longer counts, subscription model was abandoned)

The only shooter I want to see made into an MMO is Left 4 Dead. Just thinking about playing a l4d where I get to customize my survivor, upgrade skills and stat's via an RPG leveling up system (think Borderlands only more complex and in a fun game), while constantly trying to survive a giant open world city. That is my dream MMO.

God I wish Valve would make that. I would literally give Gabe Newel my left nut for that game to get made. Why he would want my left nut I do not know. But if it got me that game made and a free life time subscription to it(It is my left nut after all) I would ask where the chopping block is because I'm ready.

I don't really see this idea working as much as Kotick thinks it will. There is far too much competition that doesn't charge those same monthly fees coming out in the future (Crysis 2, Medal of Honour, Halo:Reach, to name a few), and shooter mmos in the past haven't worked. A World of Duty style of system just doesn't appeal.
It sounds like Kotick beating the drum for a bigger money pile by shafting the very guys that gave him so much CoD money in the first place. What a dick.

I'd love to see a Call of Duty MMO without the people responsible for making CoD good involved.  It wouldn't even be an MMO, but rather pay to play FPS.  That coupled with Activision pumping out 2 Call of Duty's a year would surely mark the beginning of the end for that shit bag Kotick.

They'll oversaturate their own market just like Guitar Hero and Bobby will be forced into seppuku.

It seems like a logical next step for the call of duty franchise, People buy it for the online and seeing the amount of money Blizzard is pulling in with WOW   Kotick must have seen this a great way to make a large amount of money.
If they do it right, make it with a lot of content, it could be a big hit and be well accepted by the crowd.
Kotick is a businessman and a darn good one

Doesn't Activision make enough money off DLC alone? In the end money is the bottom line and Kotick sees a way to make it.

How are people not bored of Call of Dooty? They have remade Modern Warfare 3 times already and are poised to do it again. Why do they deserve more of peoples money? The main reason a person spends 60 dollars on there shitty game, is to play online.

yeah i think there will be down the road it will turn into the new mmo sub-genre in my opinion. Having a shooter where you play maybe 30 to 50 bucks a year or have a month period to buy. The only good side of it is that map packs will most likely will be free to download. But all in all its not my cup of tea!

@blacklabeldomm: Do you have any experience in journalism? No? Then shut the fuck up and let the man write important news stories. If you don't like it, go to another website where you claim they're ripping stories from.
