Patrick has some news to share about the future, and somehow acts surprised at how many horror links there are this week.

“We have to go back.”

Six years ago, I moved from Chicago to San Francisco. Six years later, I’m headed back.

One of the last conversations I had with my father before he passed was telling him we were coming home. This was more than a year ago. At the time, we figured it would happen in a few years. My wife and I had started talking about the future, and we were concerned about the logistics of raising a family in the Bay Area. It’s expensive, and our families are in the midwest. When my father passed, the gut reaction was to panic, and sprint towards what’s comforting.

During my extended stay in the midwest last summer, I considered not coming back. But life cannot be defined by crisis, and I'd have regretted pulling the trigger so quickly. I loved the life I’d built in San Francisco, and I loved my job. Around the time of our wedding, we committed. The plan was to move back for the first anniversary of my father’s passing, and that date is rapidly approaching. A year moves fast.

You might have gotten a sense that change was coming when I started experimenting with streaming from my apartment using a MacBook Air. Man, that was dumb! It was around then I was mulling the logistics of no longer being in the office, and how that impacts the work I’ve come to value while being part of Giant Bomb. I came to this place as a wordsmith, but have since spent most of my time in front of a camera. When I move, the extra time means I’ll naturally gravitate back towards more writing and reporting, but I don’t want to lose the connection I’ve built up with Giant Bomb’s incredible audience.

I’m actually excited about what’s possible being disconnected from the office. Alex and I have been talking about doing a live morning show, since we'll both be in earlier time zones. Perhaps most importantly, I haven't had time to break any big stories. Now, I will. It’s very frustrating to sit around and watch other reporters file stories that I’ve sat on for weeks or months, knowing I could have easily done that. Now, I can. Besides more frequent Encylopedia Bombastica entries and Spookin’ With Scoops episodes, you can look forward to much more thoughtful, in-depth reporting from me. I’ve really missed it.

June 21 will be the last day I’m in the office, but I’ll continue to be your news editor at Giant Bomb.

We’ll leave the teary goodbye for another day.

Hey, You Should Play This

No Caption Provided

Besides Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, there’s not another horror game I’m looking forward to as much as Among The Sleep. It's comforting to have my enthusiasm justified. On paper, Among The Sleep is a winner. You’re a two-year-old trying to find your parents in a house where things are going very, very wrong. I’d play that game, even if it turned out awful. As part of its Kickstarter funding, the developers released a playable version of the game. They are very much on the right path with this one.

And You Should Read This, Too

No Caption Provided

Speaking of horror games, Frictional Games co-founder Thomas Grip sat down with Slender: The Arrival and wrote a thoughtful analysis of what does and doesn’t work. Scaring people seems like one of the most difficult task for a creator, whether we’re talking about games, books, movies--whatever. Horror is incredibly subjective, and requires participation by the player/viewer/reader in a way other genres do not. Grip’s methodically breaks down and articulates why Slender: The Arrival can get under your skin.

"Most of the creepiness comes from the game featuring perfectly normal situations and locations. It is easy to draw parallels between the game's scenery and your own life experience. There is no need to figure out the world and your place in it, all that comes automatically. This makes it possible to become immersed in the atmosphere almost instantly. It also makes the game leave a certain amount of dread behind after you have finished playing."

Apparently we’re keeping it morbid on Worth Reading this week. Former THQ president Jason Rubin has penned a stunning editorial about the unfortunate working conditions at Metro: Last Light developer 4A Games. It’ll have you reaching for the buy button on Steam by the end, and only makes what 4A Games has pulled off with both the Metro games all the more impressive. It makes you wonder what 4A Games would be capable of with better support. You know, like proper chairs.

"When 4A needed another dev kit, or high-end PC, or whatever, someone from 4A had to fly to the States and sneak it back to the Ukraine in a backpack lest it be "seized" at the border by thieving customs officials. After visiting the team I wanted to buy them Aeron office chairs, considered a fundamental human right in the west. There were no outlets in the Ukraine, and our only option was to pack a truck in Poland and try to find an "expediter" to help bribe its way down to Kiev. We gave up not because this tripled the cost, but because we realized that the wider Aeron chairs would require spreading out people and computers, which would lead to extra desks, and that ultimately would have required bigger offices. Yes, really."

Crowdfunding Has Promise, Hopefully Developers Don't Screw It Up

  • I love games with two people on a journey together. Hopefully The Realm tuns out well.
  • Boon Hill is a graveyard simulator. Game, you had me at graveyard.
  • Remember that dinosaur video game from last week? It's The Stomping Land.

Love you, Patrick!

If this means that Patrick will stream from home, and we'll get (as much) content from the core crew, this is just good news.

And as I said in the chat, as long as Jeff is around I'll subscribe to anything.

Well fuck.

You exiting the majority of the live/video content and the podcasts is going to leave a gigantic hole, man. Some people might not consider you one of the "pillars" of Giant Bomb, but you're the only one besides - maybe - Brad who would reach out to stuff like Monster Hunter or Fire Emblem for any amount of time. I might have disagreed with a fair few of your opinions, and even how you went about expressing them sometimes, but fuckin' A if you aren't a fundamental part of what I consider to be Giant Bomb.

Best of luck to ya, and hopefully that morning show and the extra SwS episodes can come of this along with more story-digging-uppery.

Also, the Patrick haters are going to be even more insufferable than usual with this news

You see, by saying this you actually have the distinction of having the most insufferable comment so far. Congrats! As usual people complaining about haters are way more irritating and numerous than the haters themselves. I know because i counted and after 208 comments there is all but one hater and two of you complainers. People like you are just trying to stir up shit where there is none.

Now back to the topic at hand, Good Luck Patrick!

It's weird to see things change but that should only give us more reason to enjoy things while they still are the way they are. At least we have another month to enjoy your presence in the Bombcast and Thursday/Friday streams.

I am looking forward to reading more wordstuff from you, though. I've always appreciated your writing voice. There are many great things ahead for you and your family. I wish you all the best!

Why did my favorite editor (and best) have to leave? Sure, we'll have a lot more articles from him now, who is going to provide us with cool games for quick looks? Brad is history now anyway, succumbing to DOTA and Ryan and Jeff are...too tired...Maybe we will see more Drew in future videos? Maybe he will be part of the bombcast? I would be O.K. with that, but still...

We will all miss you in the office, even if we just saw you through our little screens. Best of luck, Patrick!

I'm getting all teary eyed. :(((

Great, now the number of quick looks has dropped dramatically because apparently no one else besides Patrick plays games anymore. Seriously, he has led almost all the quick looks lately. Not a complaint against him though, more just wondering what everyone else is doing. I guess Jeff's busy with E3 judges, Ryan's securing the secret E3 house, Vinny is prepping video production, and Brad...well I guess Brad is playing Dota 2.

I'm gonna be real with you Patrick, I wasn't your biggest fan. Not because of your articles about big industry issues like females in games, I actually enjoy your articles, but rather how often times you would lay down a harsh opinion without much clarification on podcasts and quick looks. Not to say your presence on podcasts and quick looks are always bad. There were many moments where I wish I was on the podcast to call out Jeff or someone out on something only to have you say what I wanted to say (seriously how can they like MGS4 but not MGS3?). But you started giving niche games a chance like Monster Hunter and EVE Online, games that the other guys would never give the time of day or the dedication to scratch beneath their thick titanium surfaces, and I grew a greater appreciation and respect for you. You were offering something that we would never get from the other 4 guys, be it personal preference, lack of free time, or just lack of patience. After Brad's dismissive, albeit humorous, blurb about Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in the Capcom Preview Event article, I was convinced that was the last blip of coverage we would ever see on a Monster Hunter game on Giant Bomb. I'm glad that was not the case.

I hope we could see more of this "outside your comfort zone" coverage, whether it be livestream or article or what have you. Maybe you could document your descent into Dark Souls if that is still something you want to do. Or maybe JRPGs...well one could dream.

Anyways, I can't really say I'm sad to see you go because, technically, you are coming to me. So...uh...welcome home?

based on the way other sites are run, this is probably a good move for Giant Bomb. it will help having a couple guys that can steady push content to the site while the office people focus on the on-camera portion of the site. Patrick is one of the top 5 names that come to mind when i think about games writing and to see him allow to re-focus on what seems to be his passion, and what is definitely his forte is really exciting.

Thanks for everything and good luck back in Chi, Patrick. It'll be tough not having you on camera with the guys anymore, but knowing that your doing whats best for yourself and your family rather than leaving on a sour note makes it sting a lot less.

The bombcast is going to take a serious hit now. No one else will talk about stuff like Sins without Patrick being there.

You sure about that? Who knows? Maybe Jeff will bring it up every so often like he once brought up stuff like Noby Noby Boy all those years ago.

Still, in a way, I'm gonna miss you Patrick. Yes, you've said some things that have pissed off a lot of people (including myself to some degree), and sometimes your biases shine through and undermine your desire to provide good journalism. But in the end, you're still a-okay in my book, and I appreciate most of what you contributed while holed up in the office.

I know he's not leaving the site per se, but still... you know it's coming.

Then it will be Vinny.

And then Ryan.

Then Brad.

All the best, Patrick. Your Eve Online and Iceland coverage is easily some of the best content I've seen on Giant Bomb since its inception. It was a hell of a way to close out your run in the Bay area!

I'm glad that it won't be a permanent "good-bye". I look forward to more great articles from you in the future. The morning show concept you're kicking around with Alex sounds promising. I hope it happens! Good luck!

I've never understood people hating on you. I've enjoyed your input to the site since day one.
