It's not goodbye, but it's definitely change. Patrick looks back at the last two years by looking back at the years before that, hops on his personal velociraptor, and heads towards the future.

Change is weird, but it’s been a weird couple of years. Giant Bomb was bought by CBS. My father passed away. I got married. What’s one more thing? If only moving from San Francisco to Chicago was “one thing.” It’s so much more, and it’s hard to unpack the future without the past.

There were a couple of reasons I came to San Francisco in the first place. 1UP offered me an opportunity to take Luke Smith’s position as news editor (he’s now a designer at Bungie). I was graduating from college, and while San Francisco was in my future, it was going to happen...later? That fall? What’s the rush? Instead, 1UP said “if you want the job, come to SF really soon.” It was a real job, so I grabbed it. Soon turned out to be a few weeks after graduation; I wasn’t around long enough for a family party to celebrate college being over.

Two, leaving the midwest was important to me. I’d spent my whole life in the Chicgoland area, and I didn’t want to get stuck there and never see the world. It’s not uncommon for midwest folk to never leave their hometown, and that terrified me. I’m sure there are plenty of people who stayed rooted and are perfectly happy, but in my mind, how could they know for sure? If they hadn’t given the rest of the world a chance, weren’t they making a calculated gamble that their current situation was the ideal one?

Off to San Francisco I went. I’d been dating my wife for a little over a year, and tossed her a big question: wanna go with me? In any other situation, I doubt we’d have made the leap to quickly move in with one another, but we didn’t have family outside of the midwest. I wasn’t going to ask her to come out to the Bay Area and get her own place because I was a commitment novice. We moved into together, it was great, and we were married six years later. Even in hindsight, I wouldn't have done it any other way.

All of my jobs have been formative, in one way or another.

1UP was my first salaried gig, and I was in charge of a whole section--crazy for a relative newcomer. That meant dealing with freelancers, paying invoices, and coming to grips with the title “news editor.” It was easy to talk high ‘n mighty about journalism in a college course, it’s altogether different when you’re tasked with running a section yourself. I learned some hard lessons during that time. One of my sources was almost fired because a story ran early for reasons that aren’t super important, and the studio he worked for ended up searching the network for proof of his communication with me over instant message. They found him/her, but several other employees had also made the same “mistake.” Crisis averted.

1UP is where MTV News editor Stephen Totilo noticed me, and reached out about the chance to write for his games-focused MTV Multiplayer blog as a west coast correspondent. I'd only been at 1UP six months, but this was too big. MTV is where my “interest” in journalism became something more, and the first time felt comfortable calling myself a reporter. I have MTV to thank for everything that came after.

Then, the recession hit. MTV laid off all its freelancers, which included me. I was being paid a salary, but blah blah, technically, I was a freelancer. Not sure where to go next, G4 came up. Los Angeles sounded like the worst, but it was already clear how important video was becoming to games coverage, and what better place to go than a television station dedicated to covering geek topics? I’d met Adam Sessler before, but I’d hardly call us friends, at that point. Even though I was hired to work on the G4tv.com web team, my angle was about getting on TV. Sessler saw enough in me to provide me with that chance, which was both an honor and supremely weird. When I was doing fancy TV stuff for E3, G4 bought me clothes. (When I quit to leave for EGM, the clothing department secretly gave me those clothes in a box, since my wife loved them so much.) G4 is where I broke the news about the split at Infinity Ward, a personal milestone. G4, as a channel, became dedicated to covering that story for roughly a whole day, easily a top ten weirdest moment in my life. It’s the kind of story you spend your years after chasing, and knowing you might not ever have anything like it again. Also, Los Angeles really wasn’t that bad.

I left G4 for selfish reasons. There are precious few spots for men to be on camera at G4, which should come as no surprise to anyone who was familiar with some of the programming decisions there. I don’t even disagree with those decisions, based on what the aims of the network were, but to become a personality, I was looking at another few years of writing for a website I didn’t really have my heart in.

A chance to be a higher-up within EGM’s reboot came up, and it was impossible to ignore. Who’d turn that down? I grew up reading EGM--it was a dream. In retrospect, I wish I had. That’s not totally true. The less said about that period the better, but I don’t regret my decision. It was the right call at the time, and everything about it informed what I wanted from a job after that. I wanted to care about the work I did.

That’s where Giant Bomb came in. I’ve known Brad since I was, I don’t know, 12-years-old? Something stupid like that. I’d met Jeff at events. While in Los Angeles, Ryan had hung out after E3, and we got really drunk and went to an 80s cover band one night. We were good friends soon after. I didn’t know Vinny or Drew. I’d met Alex a few times. I quickly connected with them, and it didn’t take long to realize I’d found the home I’d been looking for all along. Great friends, respectable content, and a dedicated community that provided one with equal love and hate. Giant Bomb has been a place where I’ve been able to, sometimes painfully, figure out what I want from my job, both personally and professionally. Giant Bomb has been a place where I’ve been given the opportunity to do whatever I want, so long as it felt right.

All of that has made the past two years such a blast. No regrets. It’s what makes the move to Chicago so bittersweet. It should feel that way. It feels right being that way. You want these choices to sting a little. It means I’ve spent the last two years doing work that meant a damn, and that's all you can ask for.

This isn’t goodbye, but it’s change. It’s not going to be fun being left out of I Love Mondays, TNT, the podcast, Unprofessional Fridays, and everything else that makes each week here at Giant Bomb so weird, satisfying, and completely random. I have to find a new path for myself on the site, and we’ll find that together. Like anything else, it’ll probably be a bumpy road, but I hope you’ll come along for the ride.

Thank you.

@stanok You do realise you're calling out Patrick for going on at length, in the middle of your own behemoth essay-sized comment, right? And all just so you can pour yet more needless bile into the internet. Top job.

Man, I'm sorry about your dad Patrick. I didn't know that, and I listen to almost every podcast (or at least the first hour). I know that was a year ago, but still, I'm sure it still hurts.

You will be missed on the podcast and on quicklooks. I've always enjoyed your commentary. I hope you continue to make good things for Giant Bomb...in whatever weird new capacity that'll be in, back in the midwest (where I reside).

I too moved from the midwest to go to college in Florida and see the world. As a kid I told myself that all of my problems would be better when I "moved to Florida". It was a constant refrain when things got tough in high school. Then I moved to Florida, and guess what, I was still the same person, same problems. Then I finally got the balls to tell the girl I really liked (back in Wisconsin) that I was into her. I finished school, moved back to Wisconsin, started my own successful business. And now, at 36, with 2 kids and 1 on the way, I can't image my life being better. Funny how that works. Took being away from here to realize how much I really like it here.

My only advice to you is Johnny Carson's advice. Which is, you're in entertainment, leave your politics at the door. There's no point writing off and pissing off half of your audience. Take it or leave it, but I will say, politics being what it is, it's not worth limiting yourself to convince nobody to change their opinion. It only pisses people off when they find out your opinion on things totally unrelated to your industry. I have to swallow that pill in the music industry, but I do it, because I love my family, and as I have matured, I have realized the futility of spitting in the wind and trying to convince strangers that my political ideas are correct. If you want to do that, go into politics. If you don't, then shut up and talk about what you know.

Anyways, good luck, and I will miss you on the podcast and on GB vids. Welcome back to the midwest!

Every one of you that acted a bitch to Kleptok hang your head in SHAME. SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME.

They seem to suddenly not exist anymore. I don't think hating for years made them happy. Perhaps they are sad now too.

After sifting through the catacombs of my mind, I overturned a single stone. Inscribed upon this stone was my one piece of heartfelt advice for you, for everything you have done for Giant Bomb and the industry as a whole. I only hope it will linger in thought, as a message to always look forward to the future without forgetting the past:

Don't wash your own velociraptor. There are people for that.

Peace out, Spooks/BearsFan128/RaptorDad/Patrick.

Gotta admit, i'm gonna miss Patrick in video content like QLs, TNT, Fridays, and of course on the Bombcast.

I've always held the opinion that the most interesting discussion is to be found when people have different opinions, interests and viewpoints. Diversity is good. And Patrick provided exactly that to the GB mix.

Patrick,

I will really miss you being part of the team proper. I don't mean to disrespect any of the other fantastic guys at Giant Bomb, but the perspective I always found myself gravitating to - and waiting for - was yours. I really look forward to watching more of your solo videos, and I hope that you guys work a little something out every once in a while in terms of meeting up and streaming. Wherever your life takes you now, I've no doubt you'll continue to make the impact you've always made.

Peace man.

Thanks for everything you've done for the Giant Bomb office. I never loved or hated you but I always thought you fit well with this group of weirdos. I do remember a lot of the EGM and 1up stuff you did so it was easier for me to enjoy most of the GB content you've produced. Good luck to your new life in Chicago and keep up the good work on the site. You will be missed. You ain't the first to leave the office and continue working on the site.

I hardly caught the fact that he was gone before a week later. Someone linked me to his farewell thing on the forums.

Hmm, last night I finished watching Jurassic Park before I saw this Worth Reading article for the first time. Must of been a sign.

But anyways, it was great having you as a consistent presence at GB. You put in a ton of effort to get game coverage and interviews done on this site and with that alongside your presence in all the GB quick looks, TNT's and other video content, you were a welcome addition to the staff. This was a great read too, learning about your career as a game journalist and how you joined the GB staff. Hope you and your family have a safe trip to Chicago.

You're the reason that giant bomb is now my main gaming site, I really enjoy all your content and are the main reason I started subscribing in the first place. It'll be sad to not see you around in the videos and such, but was a blast while you were here.

I wish the very best for you for the future and hope the move goes smoothly for you. Hopefully we'll still see some videos from you again in time.

Thanks for being awesome Patrick! :)

Going to miss you man. Started following you on G4 way back and remember when you broke the Infinity Ward story, and how Ryan exclaimed "KLEPEK KILLIN IT OVER AT G4" on that breaking news bombast. Was so excited when I found out you had joined the GB crew and the past 2 years have been a blast. I will continue to look forward to reading your amazing coverage of everything video games and more, and am going to seriously miss your face popping up on my browser every time I hit up Giant bomb.

Good luck in Chicago!

PS: I got fam there, maybe I'll be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of you and your velociraptor roaming the streets, searching for scoops.

Patrick, one of my biggest fears is that I'll never leave Southwestern Ontario. I was born here, I grew up here, and I'm going to college here. I'm not ashamed or embarrassed by any of that, but I don't want to live my entire life in this tiny part of the world. I have another year of college left, but hopefully my career allows me the opportunity to see a bit more of the world. Otherwise, and I know it might seem a bit hyperbolic, but if Toronto the only "big" city I've ever been to, I'll be a bit more than bummed out.

Anyways, good luck in Chicago and I'm glad you'll be sticking around.

Nobody can fault you for your decision. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for you being so far away from home last summer. Looking forward to more stories, interviews, and Spookin' with Scoops segments. Hope this new arrangement works well for you and GB as a whole.

Good luck Patrick. You're little anecdote about moving away kind of resonated with me. I feel like I'm going to be in the same position when I finish school in a year. Even if I don't end up living somewhere else forever, there's a big world to experience.

Patrick,

You were my favorite personality on GB. Its hard to see you go and I hope that your presence isnt diminished on the site now that you arent at the office. Even though it inherently will be, im hoping that you get enough content out there that it makes us feel like you havent left.

Anywho, ill never forget when I saw you on G4 and thinking, "Man, that guy seems like an down to earth dude. I bet hes a shit ton of fun to hang out with".

And although I never got a chance to meet you, it felt like we hung out plenty of times through all the crazy shit you guys do on GB. I loved your insight on the podcast. You made me want to play all these crazy games that I normally wouldve brushed off as "some indie piece of crap". Instead, you really opened my eyes to a whole new world of video games. Now, I play anything i can get my hands on.. and I have you and GB to thank for that.

Like I said, I hope this isnt goodbye. I hope its hello to a new beginning.

Thanks for everything you did Patrick. You will be greatly missed.
