When in doubt, try to play saxophone memes through a video game on your keyboard, and get really upset because you suck at it.

Here's a screen shot of Dyad because nothing seems appropriate, and Dyad looks super cool.
Here's a screen shot of Dyad because nothing seems appropriate, and Dyad looks super cool.

There’s not much to be said on a day like this. We will probably never fully understand why a shooter opened fire in a crowded theater last night during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises. A sudden heart attack, a senseless act of violence--we never know life's going to throw us a curveball, and change everything.

Have a moment of silence, say a prayer, or maybe tone down your snark on the Internet today. For a couple of hours, anyway.

I’ve been trying, without much success, to track down the developer of Slender. That guy is really onto something, right? Like all horror, it’s not an experience that gets under everyone’s skin, but it managed to mess me up in the middle of the day, and I’m curious to know where those ideas might go next. I’ll keep at it, and let you know. That Amnesia follow-up got sidetracked from real world events the last few weeks, but I’m hoping to sit and play through the downloadable episode, Justine, and return to that mindset from not long ago.

One doesn’t need a game to get scared today, though, explaining this week's highlighted game.

Hey, You Should Play This

No Caption Provided

Yes, yes, another game that’s full of tiny pixels, but once you’ve played Epic Sax Game, something tells me I’ll be forgiven. Epic Sax Game is an interactive riff on this meme that came from Eurovision in 2010 (Know Your Meme has the full story), in which players are tasked with recreating the infamous, infectious sax tune with their own fingers. Creator Pippin Barr actually has a website full of interesting, experimental, eccentric games like this one, but I wouldn’t know about any of them if it wasn’t for Johann Sebastian Joust designer Douglas Wilson going on and on about Epic Sax Game on Twitter. If you’re looking for another source of game recommendations, Wilson is your man.

And You Should Read These

Conversation about the relationship, representation, and interactions between women and games is unlikely to disappear anytime soon, and that’s partially because we’re continuing to see so many great writers weigh in with \ things to say. Jenn Frank’s piece on Unwinnable is long-winded in the best way possible, long-winded because Frank much to say about a subject that is clearly deeply personal, important, and uncomfortable. If you’ve met Frank in person, her writing is a remarkable encapsulation of her speaking style--frantic, all over the place, and positively engaging. As much as Frank’s piece has nothing to do with games, it has so much to do with games, especially as it relates to our socialized expectations and norms, and how easy it is to be misguided about long-held beliefs.

Lately someone accused me of “girl-on-the-Internet syndrome.” He could have leveled a lot of valid criticisms at me, given what I’d written; this particular blow, however, struck me as hollow.

“I have been on the Internet since 1993,” I replied. “I got over being on the Internet long before I ever got over being a girl.”

Do you remember when one games journalist — one of the best, and happenstantially a female — pleaded that we recognize her as a person? Like, as just an ordinary, normal human being? It was heartbreaking.

I remember reading that column and thinking about how, even if you actively work to not “prove your gender” to others, there is an enormous faction that will conversely work to remind you that you are a woman, and “just” a woman, every chance they get.

They might even say it benevolently: “Why, she’s my favorite female games writer!”

This piece from Kate was one of many in response to IGN’s Colin Moriarty making the argument that political correctness is hurting the creativity of video games, and that we, as players and commentators, should allow developers free reign to try new things, and maybe get it wrong, too. His underlying point is sound, but the holes and caveats within his argument rubbed more than few people the wrong way, including Kate Cox. I’m with her on this one, too. We should encourage developers to be bold, daring, and challenging in their subject matter, but doing so does not exempt them from criticism. When you wade into dangerous waters, you must be prepared to defend yourself, as simply putting yourself in the line of fire, while commendable, does not mean you are suddenly immune.

Make sure to click on the first video in the next section for a good example of what I’m talking about.

But "I don't like it" isn't the end of the conversation; it's the beginning. Next comes, "Here's why I don't like it," which opens the door to discussion. Discussion and awareness are the ways in which culture changes over time. Standards of racism were appropriate in mainstream culture sixty years ago that are unacceptable now, and that's not a bad thing. Yes, you can use a racial epithet in your work of fiction if you want. But you're going to have to have a reason; there will need to be an intention behind it. The audience's standards have changed, and artists, who both reinforce and challenge culture, need to understand how and why.

If You Click It, It Will Play

I Don’t Know About This Kickstarter Thing, But These Projects Look Neat

  • Moon Intern, a side-scrolling action RPG that preys upon my love for pixels and things made in Chicago.
  • Crea, a riff on the 2D sandbox game (see: Terraria) with a focus on player modding.
  • Star Command, that probably dangerously addictive management game is trying to come to PC and Mac.

Oh, And Some Other Stuff

I have to say that these are becoming less interesting to me over time. I think its because they amount to play this pixel game, here's this article that challenges something usually from a critical perspective, here's some extra stuff idk...also some horror stuff which is kinda cool. I think Patrick's longer form articles are top notch but I'm not even going to click on these anymore.

Well since I could give less of a shit about these one off pixel games and I find methodological issues with the critical/feminist perspective compared to contemporary sociology, I'm kinda done with these forever. No big deal though, Patrick's an adult, he can take it.

It has nothing to do with her getting drunk and making a fool of herself, I've thought she was terrible long before I came to Giant Bomb and saw her on that second E3 podcast.

I used to regularly visit Kotaku and her articles on there were universally terrible to the point where I stopped reading anything that had her name on it. Anyone that considers the garbage that she writes to be some of the best out there about video games is so far removed from my tastes that their opinions hold no value to me.

"...or maybe tone down your snark on the Internet today."

Because you asked nicely, Patrick, okay.

I'm glad you found the video for that SCP game, Patrick. Ever since people started harping upon Slender, the only thing I thought was, "Man, the guys who do those free SCP horror games must be pissed that THIS is getting attention". The SCP Foundation have so many great horror stories, and the free games that crop up based on some of those monsters are just as unnerving as Slender imo. Good looking out, embedding that one (I played the one based on SCP-087, I think, a few months ago. Different game, still terrifying as shit).

You know what is most annoying about this whole debate over what is "offensive" in games, games industry or not? It is that inherit political nature of the debate. Most of us, the buying public that actually buy enough games to matter or keep enough traffic feeding sites like this could care less about the political game playing of either side of this debate. The overly sensitive, although loud, very loud, do make not enough of a majority to impact game sells. On the flip-side, games that tend to just pander also tend to be devoid of creative effort or good game play. So the worst offenders on either side are basically inert to the real debate.

But damn does it result in a lot of needless drum banging. When debate because too politicized neither side is completely rational. For example Patrick links..

Here's another thoughtful response to the aforementioned editorial on IGN about censorship.

But in this article, the nameless author, throws out such big whoppers as "...because our society trivializes rape..." and just assumes we are on board with such ridiculous sweeping generalizations. The author complains of "straw man arguments" and then turns around and creates his own by suggesting that Moriarty said "Let the free market decide!" The author even uses quotes which leaves the impression that Moriarty actually used those words in his article. Not only did he not but he never even makes an argument even remotely close to that argument.

On the other side we have Colin Moriarty suggesting that all criticism is equal to censorship. That might follow if our prior anonymous author was starting a boycott or some other form a censorship but so far that doesn't seem to be point.

Thoughtful, well reasoned criticism is always fair. Some of that will always reflect personal taste which in turn reflects the editorial slant of the website or magazine, but when people start to attempt to politicize aesthetics at it's best is just dull and boring and at it's worst is leads to much worse.

People get mistreated. Anonymity makes that easier, so the internet increases it.

Of course there is a problem about how women are treated on the internet. But feminism is not the answer. Feminism is not for equal rights, it's for the rights of women. Feminism will defend women on the internet, but will not defend how boys are treated in schools, how men are treated if they're around children, how family courts treat dads, how domestic violence effects husbands.

Women's rights are important, but so are Men's rights. Everyone's rights. Egalitarianism.

The internet was male dominated for a very long time, and as a such, it will take a cultural shift, a change of generations for women to become completely integrated into it. Imagine a man going to work in a kindergarten, or chaperoning a sleepover, or even be seen with his daughter in a park. Sometimes people imagine the worst of things.

If someone is an asshole with no reason, call them out. If someone threatens you, shut them down. Everyone deserves respect, but they shouldn't hold is as a given.

However, if you can't take a joke, then deal with it. If you feel like you're being treated unfairly in this society, join the fucking club, cause you're not alone.

@dr_mantas: I had a real long argument drawn up but then I realised this is the internet so I'm going to settle for 'you are misrepresenting a very important political movement and I implore you to do more reading (preferably not in the Reddit Men's Rights section) about it'.

Kthx.

@Lightningproof: Thanks for at least considering an argument. It's true that I haven't read enough, on both sides of the issue. If I misrepresent the movement, I'm sorry, and I recognize the historical significance, but in my humble opinion it's only historical. And feminism is too malleable a concept, that can be defended in a "no true Scotsman" sort of way.

But if you have any reading suggestions I welcome them. I'll try despite how angry some arguments make me.

And if you disagree with what you find on /r/mensrights, hopefully it's an informed disagreement, not dismissing an opposing opinion out of hand.

@dr_mantas: Women get shit on the internet, and probably the majority in real life too, every single day of their lives for purely being women. Men never have and never will.

And Feminism is for equal rights, it's just that the word has been transformed so much that the first thing we think about is a man-hating, sexist. The majority only want equal rights in a society that has grown up specifically around men. Sure, some do just hate men, but if you take men on face value it's not as if we don't look completely sexist too. We hear the loudest and the most aggressive. Vocal minority, and all that.

Feminism is still needed, though. I'm not going to talk about political or economical terms here, and just going to give you an anecdote that happened to me a couple of weeks ago.

I run a gaming event at a bar every month, we play fighting games and have tournaments and stuff. Last month there was a female competitor, and as soon as she grabbed the controller to start playing people started saying, 'oh, you can't lose to her, mate!' and shit like, 'You got the easy match here!' Those comments might be in jest, but they still fucking happened. All feminism wants is to cut that shit out, and let everyone, everywhere be on the same playing field.

@biggiedubs: Your point seems to be that only women are treated badly in our society (I will focus on western society, as that's the one I'm most familiar with), and the only way to improve this situation is by the feminist movement.

It's not true that only women are treated badly, and if they are, it's not every day of their lives. Men can be treated just as badly, and currently most of homeless people are men, men die younger than women and have generally worse health, also they account for more suicides and lethal/non-lethal injuries. And mistreatment of women doesn't only come from men, but also from other women, which is against the idea of patriarchy being a root cause. My point is that it's basically a universal problem, and people have been mistreated for all human history. However, we right now live in the safest and most egalitarian time there has ever been. And we're still continually improving.

Feminism, as it works in practice, doesn't solve problems by equality, rather by improving the situation for women. This works up until the point that women are in a better situation than men. Affirmative action to get more women into higher education was appropriate until more than 50% of college graduates became women, now it's not actually equal to have affirmative action for women. Feminism doesn't talk about it, because it's not beneficial to their viewpoint.

In the end, everyone should be treated equally, and mistreatment should be called out - but not by blaming it on patriarchy, rape culture, and blaming every single man, but by condemning individuals, and finding solutions.

By the way, sorry for mistakes in my English, it's not my first language.

Wow, that Extra Credits video was surprisingly awesome, content-wise. The people who made that should feel proud.

My only complaint about it is the voice thing, which will probably prevent me from watching more of their videos. I get that they're going for a particular aesthetic (soundsthetic?), but it's honestly a little distracting, given the subject matter.

All this stupid bull shit about sexism in games is really making me realize that Jonathan Blow is basically spot on when he says writing is mostly bullshit. With everyone being able to write whatever they want on the internet these days, it's not surprising when most people don't know how to develop sound arguments or sound responses to said arguments. Then it just becomes a cyclical chain of people talking out of their asses.

I'll just keep repeating it until it goes away. There really was nothing offensive about the "Tomb Raider rape" in that there is no Tomb Raider rape.

The "rape joke" thing with Tosh only proves that Tosh isn't very funny, although it did give us a brilliant Louie CK interview on The Daily Show, and the IGN article versus the article Patrick has linked to only proves the uncanny ability of games journalists to argue two opposite sides of an issue and get it wrong both times.

But hey, just to add something new: anybody remember the actually way more visceral scene of sexual assault in Heavy Rain that nobody even batted an eye about? The one in which a sexualized woman who appears naked seconds before is assaulted by several masked men? The one that was in all the trailers for the game and nobody thought to attack?

The continuing development of this "rape is off limits for art" narrative is very interesting, not because of the underlying argument, which is rather pointless, but because it proves that virality has become the driving engine in our society. Things matter if people notice them and, sadly, ONLY if people notice them. This is behind Kickstarter, indie gaming, this controversy and a bunch of other success and failure stories from the last decade.

I'm going to assume you were going to make a Fred Willard joke, and not refer to that OTHER thing that happened in a movie theater this week...

Can't we all just get along make some Fred Willard masturbation jokes?

IGN's Colin Moriarty, being an insufferable douchebag who yammers on about the white man's burden? The same one who told gamers to not complain about Mass Effect 3, on the basis that it'd hurt Bioware's *snicker* "artistic integrity"?

Truly shocking.

Just wanted to let you know that I've been home sick today and I ended watching all most every episode of Extra Credits thanks to this one episode you posted here. Thanks Patrick, I would have never known about this if not for you.

the first paragraph is the reason it happened. That shooting will get a more emotional reaction out of most Americans than any hard facts about drone strikes and the killings that the government does there. Its because its close to home that it has any value, if there was a 0 at the end of the number of people dead, and it was a village in pakistan bombed by a drone, no one would even report it. Lets be real, because that actually happened, so this is not a hypothetical.

I think the reason it happened was to show the amount dead doesn't matter, its the context in which it happened and whether or not it applies to your daily life. This shooting made me think about how drone strikes are magnitudes more innocent people dead, and people still support the US Government.

Worse things happen to innocent people every day because they are victims to terrorism by the US government, but people can imagine themselves going to see the new batman, and then they freak out because it could have been them.

The same government that went "video games are bad and violent" have their own remote controlled airplaines that drop bombs, THAT ARE CONTROLLED BY A GAME CONTROLLER. They even compare it to a game themselves. I'm pretty sure drones are the pinnacle of everything they didn't want previously.

That massacre only made it more obvious the difference between a rational opinion and an emotional opinion. Rational: US is far worse than that guy who killed those people in the movie theater...Emotional: It might happen to me so i'm extra scared and sad about the batman shooting

Forget about the whole 2nd ammendment being meant in the context of its time, meaning people needed guns, because the civilians were the military, and would bring their own guns, so it kind of made sense. but lets not mention that, oh wait i did :D
