Sigourney Weaver reflects on the impact of Ellen Ripley, deep consideration of personalizing the NPC, and much more.

When I started dating my wife, she was really into football. More specifically, she was really into the Chicago Bears. Despite growing up in a football household, it never rubbed off on me.

No Caption Provided

Since I thought she was a pretty cool lady, I made a serious effort to get into football. A few years later, I'm probably more hardcore than she is, following the various storylines, drama, and athleticism across the whole league, instead of simply what's happening with my hometown team.

One of the things that always comes up around non-sports people is curiosity over cheering for something you have no control over. If the Bears win, it has nothing to do with me. If the Bears lose, it has nothing to do with me. That's true, absolutely. I'm not someone who subscribes to karmic influence on a sports team.

That said, my inability to control sports is part of the reason I love it. Watching players at the top of their game making impossible catches and throws is part of it, but the nightmare is part of it, too. None of this matters, all of this matters. My day is made, my day is ruined. Jay Cutler is great, Jay Cutler is the worst.

I love you, football. Go Bears!

It's been 35 years since Ridley Scott's Alien was released, and Ellen Ripley, played by actress Sigourney Weaver, remains one of the most bad ass, inspirational women to hit the silver screen. Ripley's daughter, Amanda, is the star of Alien: Isolation, which was released earlier this week. (My review is here.) Because Weaver was invited to briefly reprise her character for the game, she's been doing some interviews about the game, and Jill Pantozzi passed on some of Weaver's comments. She eloquently talks about the legacy of her character, the inability for Hollywood to regularly invent new female leads, and even touches on the same problems facing games.

“I’m sort of both thrilled about being, having played, a kind of iconic character, but I wish it weren’t such a lonely feeling. Because I do feel that women are so incredible. It seems to be hard for Hollywood to come up with good just sort of straightaway--straight, true women characters that they don’t try to make, you know, ‘sympathetic’ or something. That’s always the kiss of death,” she said. “When a person will try to write you to make people feel something for you instead of just letting you get on with it, it can be a kiss of death. It takes talented people in all these different fields to come up with good men and women characters. There’s so many great examples in the world of powerful, interesting personalities that I hope it’s more--perhaps if more women choose to enter this field of creating games, that will happen. I just think that, as someone who doesn’t know that much about games but thinks they’re great, I just feel like there should be games for everybody, for everybody’s taste. I am sure it will happen.”

Shadow of Mordor is giving us plenty to talk about, and Austin Walker does a terrific job of putting the evolution of the NPC into context. While lavish (and rightful) praise has been directed at Mordor for giving players reasons to care about the characters around them, it's hardly the first to do so, and the groundwork has been steadily built outside the world of video games. Walker tells a particularly harrowing tale about his experience with Watch Dogs, a game he tried to play without killing anyone, and explains why he pulled the trigger. It wasn't a scripted moment, it was an emergent outburst created by the game that collided with real-life experiences.

"However novel this shift is among action games, it actually has roots across other games, in other genres. Dwarf Fortress has been generating funny, sad and terrifying fantasy stories for the better part of a decade. The inhabitants of Dwarf Fortress make jewelry, get drunk and complain about the quality of their bedrooms. In its most recent major update, a new history system allows for the game’s civilizations to pursue large-scale goals alongside the player, expanding, trading, going to war and collapsing.

Non-player characters have had a range of behavioral freedom in The Sims series. In each game, the player is able to determine their own character’s degree of autonomy, while other systems determine the lives of the world’s NPCs. At its most extreme, in The Sims 3, a player can use the NRass StoryProgression mod, which enhances the game’s built in simulation systems, allowing for a whole city of motivated, self-functioning Sims. Unfortunately--especially given the success of Mordor’s procedural NPCs--The Sims 4 removed this, with only the player’s characters advancing through a life of love, work and intrigue."

Given that Ellen Ripley is such an iconic character, it's a shame her daughter couldn't have been better written or voiced. She's not bad or anything, just sort of... indistinctive, much like most of Isolation's characters, though, I suppose. Samuels in particular seems like he could have made for a really interesting character, only they kinda do nothing with him for the most part.

Austin Walker's piece was terrific. My experience was Watch Dogs was slightly different than his though — I never really got the impression that the NPCs were all that believable because most of the information you got on them only skin-deep, and often eye-rollingly contrived. I still hated killing people in that game, especially when your hand was forced.

Shadow of Mordor, on the other hand, absolutely nails it. It's funny; the Orcs in that game have so much character that it actually makes the rest of world feel completely dead in comparison. I'd love to see that system paired with the kind of environmental world-building that you see in something like Red Dead Redemption or Skyrim. Maybe they just need to decouple it from the Middle Earth license so they can set it somewhere more alive.

I tried, I've watched everything, but I can't, in good conscience, support anything Anita Sarkeesian does when she talks about sexism in gaming. She constantly plays the "victim" card and makes everything into sexism.

Case in point: In the video Patrick linked, she calls impersonation, defamation, and slander a weapon used against women, "especially feminists," as if men are just immune to those things (At 4:15ish). There are legitimate complaints against her videos and views, but it just seems that she ignores everything that isn't flat out praise for her and her own. Everything else is just misogyny.

On a more humorous note, I like her Portal 2 commercial, because it could totally be seen as sexist (the reason Chell never fell is only because of the boots, not because of her skill or anything, she was literally just a "subject") yet she showed it for humor.

I can't wait for someone to read this and assume I'm trying to justify the threats made against her. That'll be a fun strawman.

@likeassur: I honestly could not agree more. Any rational argument trying to be made against her points either gets blatantly ignored or thrown in with actual harassment with no real discussion or argument being made. Fair criticism is apparently not valued highly much anymore.

Thanks for this list of links Mr. Klepek; I may even visit some of them. You have picked a rough time to be a Bears fan but it could have definitely been worse. The perception has always been Jay Cutler gets by with raw talent rather then spending hours refining his throwing motions like Tom Brady. I'd hate it if I was a Bears fan myself.

@likeassur: Acknowleding this would be a big first step for games journalists to actually show that they have any intention of pushing games journalism forward. The only thing I've seen from them is stagnation and steps backwards.

About Smash Bros. 3DS making people want a WiiU, I've seen people in the Smash community who were furious that Smash didn't get the review scores they wanted it to get, but after only weeks of playing it they say they can barely play it competitively because of the lag, didn't like the controls on the 3DS and can't wait for the WiiU version to come out. The exact reasons the review scores weren't as high as they wanted them to be.

Ah, the inadvertent decade-drop. Surely this thing from my past can't be that old, right? Welcome to being the out-of-touch adult @patrickklepek. Soon you'll be saying "They don't make restrained monster movies like they did back in my day. It's all just blood and guts now. No craft. Just showing off their damn fancy computer CGI."

Then comes the slight chagrin as 19 year-old kids start cheering for the Bears in the playoffs. Fairweather fans, harrumph. They haven't been here since the Lovie Smith era. Harrumph.

@likeassur: She never says it's exclusive to women, she simply says it's a frequent tactic. She doesn't say she's the only one at all. Maybe the world would be a better place if as a whole people who don't like her prioritized shutting down some of the incredible bullshit both she and others are experiencing due to a hateful mob mentality before nitpicking word usage and time stamping videos like they found some ah-ha moment.

Not gonna lie, the best thing about that Charles Dexter Ward game is the Charles model looks exactly like H.P. Lovecraft. Which is great since CDW is probably the most self-insertion Lovecraft ever did.

Then I kept reading about it and S.T. Joshi is doing advisory work, and then I remembered where Agustin Cordes' name was so familiar - I loved Scratches (also I've got the reading comprehension of a seven year old apparently because Patrick put it right the fuck there). Suddenly this game seems really fucking cool to me, and I'm always struggling to figure out if The Case... is my favorite Lovecraft or not so now I'm putting money into this thing.

Gonna predict the Bears miss a Wildcard spot by two wins. The Pack and Lions are gonna be one and two in the North, with two getting a Wildcard slot. Which will leave the final Wildcard spot to be fought over between whoever finishes 2nd in the East and West. San Fran and Chicago will be on the outside with 8-8 records... Hey, Patrick started it by talking about Football. ha!

I've been uncertain about paying attention to what youtubers have to say about games; I am incredibly picky on who I will watch, and Jim Sterling's piece is a major reason why. That list of requirements to cover Mordor early was insane. Even if the youtuber revealed they agreed to the deal how could anything they say after that reveal be nothing more than advertising.

Wow, that article about NPCs absolutely blew me away. That might be one of the best articles I've ever read on the internet.

I found that article by the Ethan Carter devs pretty fascination, and an interesting education. I hope more games use these kinds of techniques to create their art assets instead of hiring a hundred workhorse artists to make bland textures while simultaneously increasing the game's cost.

@corvak: Inflammatory? What? She says the most harmless and obvious things ever, in the politest way possible. I really do not understand where her detractors get the “inflammatory” from. That’s just completely incomprehensible.

Also, please consider that people have a problem when you call her stuff “inflammatory” despite being obviously anything but. Disagreeing with it is fine. But thinking what she says is “inflammatory”? What? How? In which world?! It’s so weird.

I mean, I guess it’s inflammatory in that people get super-angry about it, chase her from her home and call in bomb threats (all things that happened) but, little hint, that’s not actually what disagreeing means. Those people get angry without any rational reason for their anger. And yeah, when so many people do that it’s perfectly fine to get defensive and not give every bad-faith rebuttal (from people who didn’t even comprehend her arguments and seem to completely misunderstand everything all the time) your time.

It would be interesting to hear Austin Walker's opinion on a game like Victoria 2, which is more impersonal in regards to its NPCs, and yet has some of the best player/population interactions in any strategy game. A game where increasing the literacy in your population, so more people can operate factory equipment, leading to people reading intellectual writing, and then demanding social and political reforms is one worth analyzing.

I didn't know the whole story on The Last of Us. My response is:
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

That Hearthstone tourney log was rad. Card tournaments are always fun! I won a Pokémon TCG one, once. But fighting game tournaments are a different story. They're rarer and more specialised competitive play, so I never had the chance to be part of a fighting game community. I've tried my not-pro hand at anime convention fighting game tournaments, but stood zero chances. The bar for entry is high.

Where does one get this card? Do you get it before or after people give your personal information out and threaten your life? Sorry but yeah, by trying to downplay her actual victimization and blaming her for actually speaking out about it you are actually, in some way, justifying the actions against her. Many of the men who have been attacked in recent developments have been supporters of hers and those men do not have the same gendered attacks and threats of sexual assault that she gets daily.

And no, before you reach for the "strawman" card, I'm being critical of what you are saying and not attributing your opinion to another group of people or way of thinking.

Thanks for linking the Mordor paid advertising piece. I would have probably heard about it from TB, but he has been in the hospital with surgery the last week and some.

Also, don't change GB. Please don't take parts of this site down paths that you don't want to. Things are fine here.

P.S. - Cutler is pretty bad.
