Sigourney Weaver reflects on the impact of Ellen Ripley, deep consideration of personalizing the NPC, and much more.

When I started dating my wife, she was really into football. More specifically, she was really into the Chicago Bears. Despite growing up in a football household, it never rubbed off on me.

Since I thought she was a pretty cool lady, I made a serious effort to get into football. A few years later, I'm probably more hardcore than she is, following the various storylines, drama, and athleticism across the whole league, instead of simply what's happening with my hometown team.

One of the things that always comes up around non-sports people is curiosity over cheering for something you have no control over. If the Bears win, it has nothing to do with me. If the Bears lose, it has nothing to do with me. That's true, absolutely. I'm not someone who subscribes to karmic influence on a sports team.

That said, my inability to control sports is part of the reason I love it. Watching players at the top of their game making impossible catches and throws is part of it, but the nightmare is part of it, too. None of this matters, all of this matters. My day is made, my day is ruined. Jay Cutler is great, Jay Cutler is the worst.

I love you, football. Go Bears!

It's been 35 years since Ridley Scott's Alien was released, and Ellen Ripley, played by actress Sigourney Weaver, remains one of the most bad ass, inspirational women to hit the silver screen. Ripley's daughter, Amanda, is the star of Alien: Isolation, which was released earlier this week. (My review is here.) Because Weaver was invited to briefly reprise her character for the game, she's been doing some interviews about the game, and Jill Pantozzi passed on some of Weaver's comments. She eloquently talks about the legacy of her character, the inability for Hollywood to regularly invent new female leads, and even touches on the same problems facing games.

“I’m sort of both thrilled about being, having played, a kind of iconic character, but I wish it weren’t such a lonely feeling. Because I do feel that women are so incredible. It seems to be hard for Hollywood to come up with good just sort of straightaway--straight, true women characters that they don’t try to make, you know, ‘sympathetic’ or something. That’s always the kiss of death,” she said. “When a person will try to write you to make people feel something for you instead of just letting you get on with it, it can be a kiss of death. It takes talented people in all these different fields to come up with good men and women characters. There’s so many great examples in the world of powerful, interesting personalities that I hope it’s more--perhaps if more women choose to enter this field of creating games, that will happen. I just think that, as someone who doesn’t know that much about games but thinks they’re great, I just feel like there should be games for everybody, for everybody’s taste. I am sure it will happen.”

Shadow of Mordor is giving us plenty to talk about, and Austin Walker does a terrific job of putting the evolution of the NPC into context. While lavish (and rightful) praise has been directed at Mordor for giving players reasons to care about the characters around them, it's hardly the first to do so, and the groundwork has been steadily built outside the world of video games. Walker tells a particularly harrowing tale about his experience with Watch Dogs, a game he tried to play without killing anyone, and explains why he pulled the trigger. It wasn't a scripted moment, it was an emergent outburst created by the game that collided with real-life experiences.

"However novel this shift is among action games, it actually has roots across other games, in other genres. Dwarf Fortress has been generating funny, sad and terrifying fantasy stories for the better part of a decade. The inhabitants of Dwarf Fortress make jewelry, get drunk and complain about the quality of their bedrooms. In its most recent major update, a new history system allows for the game’s civilizations to pursue large-scale goals alongside the player, expanding, trading, going to war and collapsing.

Non-player characters have had a range of behavioral freedom in The Sims series. In each game, the player is able to determine their own character’s degree of autonomy, while other systems determine the lives of the world’s NPCs. At its most extreme, in The Sims 3, a player can use the NRass StoryProgression mod, which enhances the game’s built in simulation systems, allowing for a whole city of motivated, self-functioning Sims. Unfortunately--especially given the success of Mordor’s procedural NPCs--The Sims 4 removed this, with only the player’s characters advancing through a life of love, work and intrigue."

Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn are sort of like the Al Sharptons of women's issues in gaming (I can make that comparison; I'm black). They drum up outrage for a quick cash payday as everyone circles the wagons, and everyone becomes more entrenched in whatever belief systems they have. I'd be more interested in what people like Amy Hennig have to say about the topic of women and games, to be honest.

I forgot about that handy "share" button on the PS4, but I wrecked a mouthy Uruk too! I had a finisher streak ready, surrounded by baddies when I clashed with the mouthy captain. He said some nonsense about how he'd rip out my spine. The second we came out of the clash I tapped the buttons, beheading that a-hole and sending his pack screaming. Good times.

@likeassur: I like the Portal 2 commercial because its transparent pandering by someone who has admitted they dont even like videogames.

Just shows how good Valve is that they can make a fan out of someone who dislikes the entire medium.

That Destiny trailer is spot on. I can't stop re-watching it. Just like I can't stop playing the game. How ironic.

That bit on Demon's Souls is spot on. Have you still not played it, @patrickklepek? If not, I don't know how you've managed to stay away from the most horror-oriented entry in the Souls games.

The issue with female characters is what Sigourney Weaver says, which is most are written as female, with all the tropes and conceptions that come along with them.

Alien's Ripley character was originally a man, and when they decided to change the gender, they just started addressing him as a "she" (they did try to shoehorn a love scene in there but ultimately discarded it, and it changed nothing for the rest of the dialogue), so it became a woman talking as a man would, and that made it seem so real, because her femininity was no longer written, it was all in her looks and acting, which were as natural as one could be in Sigourney's case.

Ripley wasn't about crying, being fragile, being flirty, being motherly (this last trait was developed after the solid foundation had been set though). She was a no-BS, straight person.

@likeassur: I disagree, but I also don't like to strawman. I find that assuming what people are thinking is a good way to get angry needlessly. For instance, "as if men are just immune to these things". She doesn't say that. How do you know she ignores criticism? She points to exactly what she considers misogyny, in a series of slides. I give her and as many people as I can, the benefit of the doubt, especially concerning their intentions. I assume people have reasonable intentions, even if I can't know for sure. What theories are more reasonable about who she is and what she's thinking? Do you think she was really making some complex statement about women and sci-fi shoes, or could she possibly not be perfect? Personally, I think her videos are elementary-grade in their feminism, but I assume they're supposed to be. The videos are for outsiders, not necessarily core critics.

I wonder just how toned down the Nemesis system is on last-gen versions of Shadow of Mordor. I'd like to try the game but haven't upgraded consoles yet. It sounds fascinating and definitely should be used for Bully 2.

Hey Patrick, I would appreciate if you commented a sentence on why you put a specific video in your worth reading. Many speak for themselves, but this week for example the higemaru one I don't get. Amy Green says Bioshock Infinite can take 35-40 hours to complete? What, How?

Great idea; I'd like to see this, too.

Amy Hennig was asked about it a few years back. Interview

Here's the quote:

Woman in a man's world: As one of very few women in senior creative positions in the video game industry, Hennig is often asked about sexism and challenges she has faced. But she says it's not an issue. "Usually it has been men who gave me the opportunities I have had. I think this is a young enough and progressive enough industry that there just isn't any of that."

But that doesn't mean her perspective as a woman doesn't come in handy on design teams dominated by men, including on Uncharted 2, which features two prominent female characters. "There was an issue with breast size sometimes. I would say to the modelers, 'Let's take it down. How about a C [cup]?' "

The Demon's Souls article is spot on about the atmosphere and how impenetrable it is, but I don't think those things are all to its credit. It even talks about the Dragon God boss as a good thing. You remember the Bed of Chaos, @patrickklepek? It's pretty much as bad as that. I appreciate Demon's Souls for the atmosphere it creates, and I think the lore is neater than Dark Souls', but I don't think it is the better game.

I appreciated Durante's article. As primarily a console gamer, I don't ever think about stuff like different screen resolutions and why that would be important, and it has made me more empathetic towards guys playing on their PCs.

I disagree; Amy Hennig has seen one side of the industry and Sarkeesian and Quinn have seen another. Nothing in Sarkeesian nor Quinn's videos or articles critiquing the industry is untrue - it IS a crazy sexist place, though not from absolutely every angle - but just because one woman has had a good experience doesn't mean every other women is blowing their problems out of proportion.

I'm not sure that is the best comparison. When Al Sharpton swoops into the conversation on an issue, there actually is something that is affecting people's lives, real discrimination, police shootings, etc. While I don't always agree with him, his notoriety may bring attention to things that are happening that some people may have ignored. And he definitely doesn't make as many bad leaps of logic as Anita does in her videos.

Zoe Quinn's game is free, so while I think she has in the past drummed up outrage, it's never been about a quick cash payday from what I can tell. The threats and harassment she has received have not helped her in any way.

Her Patreon might very well benefit from it. This controversy has gotten here more publicity than she had ever before. I, however, don't think that there are any statistics on how, or if at all, it affected her Patreon. What was the monthly amount she received before the controversy started?

I haven't researched it, but didn't her Patreon exist before the harassment and threats? In which case, she's not the one drumming up outrage, those harassing her are doing it.

She did release that click-bait article through Cracked a while back, which certainly was not intended to ease the tides. And yes, the Patreon existed before the controversy and considering the outrage it would seem plausible that this could give a boost to her Patreon. Again, no evidence for that though.
