Xbox Live To Blame For Lack of Final Fantasy XIV On 360

And the story remains the same.

If you're thirsty for an MMO experience, don't bother with buying an Xbox 360. It appears that once again, a studio can't come to terms with Microsoft. Square Enix, developer of Final Fantasy XI for the 360, has joined the list of studios that can't break through negotiations for a forthcoming MMO.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Final Fantasy XIV Online director Hiromichi Tanaka pegged, of all things, the Xbox 360's online service as the reason why Final Fantasy XIV, it's latest MMO, isn't coming to the system.

"The main reason why we couldn't go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system," he told the publication during E3. "[Live is] different to the normal Internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice."

There's nothing forward-looking, no cheeriness from Tanaka-san. Final Fantasy XIV Online for the 360 might have been a project, but it is no longer. "Microsoft has a different point of view," Tanaka continued, "they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. We're still talking to… We couldn't come to an agreement on Xbox Live," he said.

What Tanaka isn't mentioning is money. But it's plain that Microsoft's MMO policies, both financial and technological, are too nasty for studios to work with.

== TEASER ==I've seen this before. I ran into a similar story in 2008 during an Indianapolis-based event called Gen Con. Champions Online was being demoed for the public there. Its booth, on the left-hand side of a cluttered room with long tables, booths, board games, and Magic: The Gathering peddlers, had several stations, most of which required the use of an Xbox 360 controller. The team was plainly excited about the possibilities of the game hitting the console--and perhaps even the PS3--but couldn't comment on when it would happen. It struck me as odd. Then, at Gen Con 2009, the story of Champions Online console had morphed into something similar to what Square went through with Microsoft.

Jack Emmert, COO of Cryptic Studios told me the game was finished for consoles, but the studio couldn't come to an agreement with Microsoft. It became a legal thing. "We just have to work it out with Microsoft," he told me, months and months before the version was revealed as dead--after it was finished, no less.

No Caption Provided
While that's the best of a few sad examples, there is still Lord of the Rings Online for Xbox 360, a purported version of the game that Turbine has never announced. As the rumor goes, Lord of the Rings Online Xbox 360 was finished in 2009, but Microsoft brass wouldn't let Turbine use a free-to-play model. It's been stuck ever since, even though the PC version of the game will go free-to-play in the near future.

As Eurogamer notes, it's ironic that Final Fantasy XI remains one of the Xbox 360's only MMOs (and one can certainly argue it's the only real MMO on the console). Regardless, I get the feeling that Final Fantasy XI was just a test for Microsoft to figure out how to play with other studios regarding their future MMOs--including even Square Enix, who doesn't want a part of it anymore. It's a bummer, but at least the parties' failure makes it plain that we shouldn't look to the system if we want to play an MMO. Not now, and perhaps not ever.

Unfortunate, Final Fantasy XI was truly one of the first games to reach cross platform where PC, xbox, and PS2 players could interact with each other in the same game world.  Would have been great to see 14 do the same but i guess Microsoft said once is enough.

Just cause a game comes out on Windows, doesn't mean Microsoft gets anything from it. There's no licensing fees or anything like that on the PC. And I doubt that Square Enix will go for the GFW branding.

The PS3 is getting Final Fantasy XIV.

Is getting. That's all I'm talking about.  Alpha Protocol was also going to be best game ever. Duke Nukem also existed.FF13 was also a PS3 exclusive. Valve also was never going to develop for the PS3. The Wii was going to fall flat on it's motion controlled face.  I'm surprised people who watch the gaming industry as close as the people around here seem to still count their chickens before they hatch - or before the eggs are even laid.  "
Yeah, I'm with you on this.
Just because it's coming out on the ps3 doesn't mean its actually worth playing.
Lets see how this plays out before people start crowing about it.

That said I'm looking forward to playing my £16.99 copy of FFXIII.

Yes, which is why this is stupid.

No, you DON'T have to play for Xbox Live Gold to play FFXI on Xbox 360. Do a little research before you spread false information.

When I read "Xbox Live To Blame For Lack of Final Fantasy XIV On 360" My eyes saw "Thanks to XBL, this Final Fantasy themed MMO won't be gracing the 360 anytime soon"

When will MMO's die already? This is just what gaming needs; another no depth, no substance, idiotic time waster for people to get hooked on.

Be thankful 360 owners, be very thankful.

@freshym: i quit LOTRO at level 50 because it was apparent that it was still important to Turbine to have player's characters collecting animal skins at that point of the game. I played that game for 2 and 1/2 months and upon entering the area right next to Mines of Moria, the NPC wanted me to collect some animal pelts. That was it for me. I was done with it.

Also, the game is being developed very much for the consoles and not for the PC (We are talking FFXIV right?). I was in the alpha test, and will be in the beta testing of FFXIV, and I can say that the game is meant to be played with a controller, they even say "We recommend that you play the game with a gamepad for optimal experience".

Also, why would I play the game on my computer when I can play it on my 53 inch tv sitting on my couch with surround sound on?  Thats a way better experience than sitting in a desk chair huddled over a monitor.

Is it just me or did this article seem like an editorial from Playstation Magazine? I only ask this because I can't see any rational person get that worked up about the lack of MMO's on a console.

I was also in the FFXIV alpha, and Xeiphyer is 100% correct. Square is building that game with the PS3 in mind. Playing FFXIV's alpha with a mouse and keyboard was an exercise in frustration as a result.

Both Champions Online and Star Trek Online began development with consoles (specifically Xbox 360) in mind. Both games are already programmed to work with 360 controllers without any fiddling with the bindings.

Anyone who claims MMOs belong on PCs was probably saying the same damn thing about first-person shooters about ten years ago.

Japanese publisher unwilling to co-operate with Western closed service system.

Color me unsurprised.

The only stick in my craw about this is that it guarantees more PlayOnline and that shit is Goddamn terrible.  I'm fine if all major publishers create their own distribution channels (EA's had one for years, Ubi has Uplay, Blizzard is turning battle.net into one, Valve's is the standard bearer, Activision clearly wants one), but Japanese publishers are so out of the loop when it comes to social networking in video games.  If Capcom hasn't made a compelling distribution service, then Konami, Squeenix and the rest don't have a chance.

To me, it sounds like MS is the one having a hard time with all of the MMO developers. They want to control everything, which goes against what MMOs are all about (look at EVE Online).

MS seems to be the problem in this instance, and they are having a hard time with both Japanese and Western developers.

In a way I'm glad. I do not need another reason to play another MMO. GuildWars =3 years, LOTRO = 2.5 years, and a little AoC. I'm burnt of MMOs. But...for people that would like to relax on a couch an play an MMO, this kinda sucks...not sure why Microsoft does not want to cater to that crowd.

Just curious as to how the UI navigation is with a controller. I'm guessing it's your typical Bioware style radial menu for skills and such?   How was FFXI on the 360? I can't imagine the control scheme straying too far away from that.

Either way after playing with the benchmark for an hour or so, I'd still get the pc version just for mods and more graphical options (I'm assuming), and other features that us PC gamers tend brag so much about.

Hopefully it turns out decent on the PS3 too. What would be wonderful is cross platform support. Did FFXI support that as well, at least 360/PC?

While I don't really care about MMOs these days, it's sad to hear more stories about Microsoft being close minded about XBL (Steamworks being the other "story").

Lets hope these things get MS to open their mind a little, game publishers should be able to charge as much or as little as they like and patch or update as much as they like, it should never be up to the platform to dictate it.

Well, it makes sense that MS would want them to charge. MS has to support the game online, after all, with its service, and online-only MMO games require more upkeep than the standard online games. Of course, just because it makes sense doesn't mean it's worth the hassle. Eventually developers are going to have to get used to this. They can't get something for nothing. It's not like they didn't know Live was a closed system. MS's move might be irritating, but it makes perfect sense.

Hey people.  A computer connects to a display device through an HDMI or VGA cable.  The same kind of HDMI or VGA cable you might be using to connect your current console to your display device.  Hence, it is as easy to hook a PC up to your 920 ft. LCD as it is your 360 or PS3.  When you say anything like; 'yeah but then you can't relax and sit back in your recliner with one hand down your pants and drinking a beer while scratching yourself when you play games on PC', you sound ignorant.  And you are.

I don't think you understand this at all. MS wants everything to be closed off to Live only, while SE wants all players to use PlayOnline, which is their own paid service.  On PS3, anyone can use their own service in addition to PSN with no strings attached.

FFXI and PSU on 360 only use XBL and are closed off from the modern world but Sega and SE still have to pay for their own servers even though MS doesn't provide these servers. XBL is a P2P service which means the only servers MS has are those to handle users but not gameplay. When you use XBL you are using the bandwidth of the guy who is hosting the match.

I can ramble on but you get the idea right?

@SolemnOaf: Sure you can connect your PC to your big screen TV but logistics often mean that's not possible.

You normally have your computer at a desk so you can sit down and actually do work while you have your TV in the middle of the living room with all the couches around it. Unless you like doing your work and internet browsing while sitting on a couch or you plan on carting your PC between your desk and your TV then playing a PC MMO on your lounge TV just ain't gonna work out.

@haggis: I don't see it so much as an issue of developers wanting to get "something for nothing" as just wanting some more control over the quality of the service they provide their customers. It was the same deal with Valve only being able to bring steamworks to the PS3.

I can see why Square, Cryptic, etc have no leverage over Microsoft on this issue, their alternative is to put it on Windows, another Microsoft platform!

^ oh jesus i give up.  There's no reason a PC can't be hooked up to a lounge TV just like a console.  Some people have more than one of the same console, don't they?  I don't use my PC for anything other than gaming or internets though, and I see your point.

This poster above me obviously hasn't read this thread very closely.  It baffles me how people can say the same incorrect things, repeatedly, even after they've been corrected.  I'm fairly sure their primary motivation for doing that is so they can bother people like me.  Why would you want to do that to me?  C'mon.
