Yes, Infinity Ward's Next Is a Call of Duty

Activision suits squashed rumors the maverick dev house is working on a new IP...at least for now.

Just the first of many?
Just the first of many?
Shacknews was the first place I saw to report that yesterday's analyst-oriented Activision Blizzard event spilled the beans on the nature of Infinity Ward's next release. Are you ready for this? It's another Call of Duty game. I'll let you absorb the magnitude of that concept for just a minute. Radical idea, I know. This puts to bed the persistent rumors that IW might be working on a new, possibly sci-fi-themed intellectual property, or perhaps even partnering with Blizzard in some capacity, now that the two are both part of the same corporate mega-conglomerate. (That second one was more wishful thinking than anything, really. Imagine an IW-developed StarCraft Ghost reimagined as a first-person shooter. YESPLSKTHX.)

CEO of Activision Publishing Mike Griffith referred to the game as "Call of Duty 6" at the event, but since World at War was consistently called COD5 for a while early on, you know this title will eventually turn into something catchier, more marketable. Something like... Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2? Actually, that raises the important question: even though it's a COD game, will it pick up where 4 left off with more modern military shenanigans in the Middle East? Since COD4 was a runaway sales success, do you think you can you stomach a decade of modern-military-in-the-Middle-East-themed shooters, with that milieu getting run into the ground the same way we've come to be totally sick of World War II? I don't think I can.

Infinity Ward is clearly at the top of the FPS game these days, so I'd like to see Activision give them the space to stretch their legs and try on different settings with each game. What about you? Where else do you think they could go, now that they've nailed the whole Modern Warfare thing?

Honestly I want some fucking SC:G already! The time is now, and better than any other. Imagine within the next year (or at the BlizzCon coming up), Blizzard doing a huge event to show off just a straight-up play through like they did with SC2 in Korea.

Dammit Blizz do it already, this gen is almost completely founded on shooters.

Call of Duty '09...

This series may as well become one of EA's... with it's yearly releases (no complaints, but really. A great series nevertheless)

I'd be excited for either a Modern Warfare 2 or a sci-fi CoD, but a part of me wishes that they were working on a brand new IP  (as in, not Call of Duty). I think eventually all these yearly releases will end up hurting the series in the end, a-la Tony Hawk.

I wouldn't mind another Modern Warfare, espically since it wasn't JUST set in the Middle East. The SAS part of the story went over a few places (A boat in the Bering Sea, sniper mission in Ukraine etc). If they can tell another story of two forces, and having them intertwine again I'd happily play that.

Eh, I don't really care as long as IW puts their collective hearts into it. That's all that matters. If they do, I can rest assured it will be a great game that I'll really enjoy.

Well, Brad...I can say that I wouldn't be surprised if one of your rumors was right.

Remember, after all...that EndWar takes place in the future...as well as BF2142.  Therefore, it's not hard to believe that with the upgrade system we saw in CoD4, as well as the rankings system and the depth the online play offered...as well as a FICTIONAL story...IW could EASILY pull off a futuristic game.

Hell, even GRAW pulled off the future.  Not too far in the future, but still the future regardless...

I'm praying that they push past all this and at least stick their hands in the hornet's nest that is future-based shooters and show some of these fools how it should PROPERLY be done!!!

I think a game that took place in Korea, both as a historical and modern war would be really cool. They could skip the part in between where you'd guard the DMZ and nothing happens though.

They can experiment with many conflicts of the 20th century, The Spanish Civil War, Korean War and even the Vietnam conflict (could be an epic game spanning from 1954 to 1975) Though the whole Vietnam video game craze played itself out 5 years ago.

I wonder how the CoD4 multiplayer community is going to react with one new CoD coming out this year, then another one the next.

It kind of seems like short notice. CoD4 is still really popular and it'd be nice to see a few more map packs.

More seriously though... Infinity Ward is really good at making First Person games that use the perspective to really immerse you in the experience and in all the chaos going on around you.  I think if anyone could do a job taking some more historic content and making an 'FPS' out of it IW could do a really good job.  Even if the 'S' ends up standing for Stabber instead of Shooter.

I don't think the Vietnam war Game ideas played itself out, its just no one made any good ones.  If anyone could actually capture the grittiness of Vietnam, its IW.  They aren't afraid to put some heavy shit into their game, seeing as how they nuked an American soldier last time around.  There is plenty that hasnt been captured in VG form about Vietnam.

The United States has become divided over the energy crisis and its link to the climate crisis. In a shocking series of State votes, the United States disbands as a Union. While more left leaning states (led by the Republic of California) favor alternative energies, the conservative minded states maintain their oil addiction. The battle is one as old as time, one of brothers against brothers, friends against friends. The game will include special off-screen strike teams played by the various business interests involved in the conflict, including Chevron and Bp on the right and the Sierra Club on the left.

Ohhhhh yeahhh.

What about a police shooter?  A game with shootouts like in Heat made by Infinity Ward.  Cops are on duty it would still work.

I think a WWIII shooter would be pretty sweet. Not a huge departure from Modern Warfare, but IW could come up with some sweet scenarios.

Armoured bears guys I'm telling you that's what's going to be in the next game.

Seriusly the more I think about it the more I just can't come up with a new war-themed FPS concept, we all got bored of shooting Thompsons in some part of France and now that seems to be self-loathing period of time to set your FPS. But like Brad said, do we want to see more Middle-Eastern and Russian battles, or would we want to see them blow it out to a complete fiction in no way related to the sorts of spin off wars we're experiencing or ones we've already been through.

It must be a bloody hard job comming up with exciting concepts at I.W for their next game, it seems they put so much new and amazing into their Modern Combat game their new game might not have as many new groundbreaking features.

Only time will tell I guess, I.W are a fantastic developer I got every faith in them I've loved every COD game they've put out so far.

Aha I've figured out what they could do, have a story in Colombia of a gorilla battle between the State and the drug lords, of course the S.A.S would have to put their noses in, how else will be see another moustache quite like Cpt. Price's sweet handlebars.

Edit: I know there's some missed out words in there and it's terrible to read that but it's 01:20 what do you want -.-

Personally I would love to see the next CoD be set in modern times, but let's take the war to European and American soil. Fight it out in suburban american dream esque enviroments and convenience stores, take the fight to some iconic places, or take the fight into Europe, to some famous countries or cities. I'd really like to see the war coming home, but what I would like the most is that CoD takes up the challange and makes it a game about war that is depressing and filled with loss and tragedy, it should evoke emotion, but be fun to play, but it should make you think. I don't think any CoD game has conveyed those feelings, Brothers in Arms is probably the game that comes closest to nailing that feeling.

I think they could spin some modern story out of North Korea and their nuclear program. Then again, they pretty much already did that with COD4, just with different countries. They will definitely have to make the story be the main attraction for the game because I don't see how they could improve on the excellent gameplay from COD4 to make consumers want to purchase a game to replace their COD4 play time.

You win the thread. For some reason the idea of pirates and a quality developer like Infinity Ward seems right. Technically Infinity Ward could probably handle any theme. A space theme would be great too I think. But ya, I can get behind a Pirates Call of Duty. There's been some pretty solid pirate-themed games in the past but nothing really that grabbed a hold of me. That Pirates! PC game back in like 2003/2004 was pretty good but the learning curve was just all wrong: the game literally went from insanely easy so you didn't need to know how to do anything well, to hard and required killer timing. Maybe I need to try that Age of Booty game. *shrugs*

Yarrrr...
