The first Assault Rifle was the made for WWII by Nazi Germany. The design was called the MP44, and it was made with the objective of being able to offer medium-long range fire with accuracy and precision, but also close range superiority. The MP44 achieved these goals and provided a basic design for other popular Assault Rifles to follow.
The next major Assault Rifle was the AK-47. Built a few years after the MP44 by the Soviet Union, it gained most of it's features and design elements directly from the German MP44. Still, even today, the AK-47 is a effective weapon on the battlefield and is the most popular weapon in the world.
Other Assault Rifles include the M16 series of rifles, G3, G36, XM8, HK416, FN SCAR, SA80, AK-74, FAMAS, FN2000, Steyr AUG, and Tavor.
Assault rifles are weapons who fire intermediate cartridges like the 5.56x45 or the 7.62x32, with automatic or burst fire modes, these weapons are often all around rifles since they fire often armor piercing ammunition, and are more accurate than machine guns.
