Flip-flops and thongs are the same thing. Also Jandals seems to be a New Zealand word for them as well.

I like the flip flops + jeans thing when I'm in my home country of Sri Lanka. It's accepted there but the one time I did it here in England, I was called out on it.

From the perspective of an American - flip-flops with jeans on a casual summer day are fine. Flip-flops in the evening at a pub or bar or something are a little more questionable, but still OK. Depends on the pub and the outdoorsiness of it. They're only acceptable on a date with someone you've known for quite some time, though.

Flip-flops with socks are never acceptable. If you don't want to show your feet, wear your fucking shoes.

I have a general rule. As a man, if you are going to a location were, if you look in the mirror, you feel you have to shave/shape up a bit then slippers are not acceptable to wear. If you are going on a date with a girl to said location were slippers are acceptable then you can only do so if you know for a fact, not think, know that the girl will have no issues with it.

I wear thongs almost exclusively in the summer unless I'm going to a specific event.

American here and you guys are all crazy, no with jeans, yes at pub, yes on dates.

Thongs generally eff up my feet after wearing them for any extended period of time, like tearing up where the straps rub the sides.

Eh, if you don't mind stuck-up pricks labeling you as a bogan (And that's gonna happen anyway) thongs are basically fine anywhere. I think thongs with jeans is dumb, at the same level of short-shorts with ugg boots, but hey, if you're comfortable, who cares.

I have never worn thongs to the office or to a bar, take that for what you will.
