Battlefield 3 is DICE's third numerical installment in the Battlefield franchise. It features a single player and co-operative campaign, as well as an extensive multiplayer component.
@HitmanAgent47: Okay then, you have the right to demand that games look just as good when videos of them are paused so you can have your screenshots, but i doubt it's anybody's priority to pause a video of a game and see that it still looks good.
I want it to look good when i run it on an i5 and a GTX 580 by the end of the year. that's what matters to me
@NickL: well, it depends, they don't release like real screenshots during the alpha or beta stage. They call this bullshots, where it's controlled and rendered on their workstation pcs, then they raise the rez up to like X4000 or more, then they photoshop it back to 1080p so it looks sharp. Other times, they just take a screenshot directly from the ram, which is like a direct feed and it always looks better. One of the tricks I use is to see if the screenshot has a hud and stuff, then it's probally real, if it's not overly sharp which means they raised the rez and downscaled it in photoshop. Tecmo does that alot for example.

Same here - I'm very curious about FB2 performance on consoles. I don't think anybody has done 'deferred rendering' on consoles yet. The guys at EA/DICE are technological trendsetters with Frostbite 2.
Could be like the step from bitmaps to whatever Donkey Kong and Final Fantasy VI were for the 16bit-era, if their tech works out well on current gen consoles.
That 570 I bought is about to get a serious workout, this game is retina melting goodness.

Dude - the game will scale very well. All you need is good enough hardware to get over a certain hump, after which the game runs smoothly and great looking. As much as I've been able to learn about their rendering method, it's all about fitting its streaming process into the RAM and the system being fast enough to handle the flow. The basic workload is much higher than with classic rendering methods, but as soon as you get it running, it's gonna be smooth sailing.
Of course computers and software are the equivalent of arcane magic to me. So this might all be bull. Pretty sure it's an ecomomic reality for it to run well on any modern gaming system, so it will certainly scale well enough for any DX11 systems. BF3 will run on a 570 just fine. Still will be the most graphically impressive game to date, even with some 'luxury settings' turned off.
I wasted some precious L.A. Noire time yesterday, getting all those screenshots taken and uploaded.. but it was worth it!

EA PWNED is a Youtube show on the EAvision channel, and it's pretty much the only real way to sneak peek at any upcoming EA games. they covered Dead Space 2 and Bulletstorm quite nicely, and they're doing the same with BF3 now! Does the name stink? Sure. Do i care? Too busy jizzing over Battlefield 3 ^^
That is so beautiful. Look at that blue. That's the best looking atmosphere I've seen in a video game for a long time. It would be perfect for a Hitman game. Dark, moody, mellow. Or a Mirror's Edge game! Oh man! Mirror's Edge with the new Frostbyte engine confirmed!? OH MY GOD!!
Agreed. I'm obsessed with "city at night" aesthetics, and images like that are why. If the sky were darker, it'd be perfect.

The more and more the military shooter genre saturates, the more and more I become less interested in something more realistic like this. Sup' MW3, world war three you say? Non-sensical world-spanning plot you say? Ridiculous co-op missions you say? Yeah, that sounds more appealing.
Looks really neat, a few people praised the animation though, I can't say that its anything special, it seems like nice animation but its not anything other games haven't done, BC2 had some decent animations.

DICE have said that they invented a new form of disc storage to go along with the new engine that allows the consoles to run close, but not equal, graphics to the PC version at top graphics.
Whether this is true/accurate, I don't know, I just remember it from a press discussion they did.
