Battlefield Bad Company Review
The Battlefield series is known for its brilliant multiplayer modes and its weak single player experience. The series has gone through many changes from modern warfare to futuristic and now it is at a tricky stage. It could either go for the same formula or change it up and thank goodness they went for the latter.
Battlefield: Bad Company has got to be one of the best games out this year. Not only does it deliver on a mildly amusing and a bearable campaign but it include a fantastic multiplayer experience that rivals the likes of Call of Duty 4. The reason why this title sets itself away from the rivals is that the environment is fully destructible, well up to the stage were the foundations are left. This is why it shines, knowing that your enemy is inside a house and that you are left with the option to bomb the hell out of it. Not only is it good that you can do this it is even more impressive that the graphics are brilliant for what is in the game even though sometimes a bit grainy .The sound is brilliant the guns sound powerful and the small sound like the in car radio just adds to the game experience. Knowing you can call in mortar strikes to blow holes in the road, blow up bridges to slow down enemies really gives you the freedom to play the game the way you want.
So the story follows a squad known as B-Company (aka Bad Company) which is a squad of misfit soldiers that the army deems expendable. You play the character Preston Marlow who joins up with Haggard a crazy man who loves to blow things up, Sweetwater a worried medic and Sgt Redford a rugged army officer. The story starts off as a kind of parody to any army game with huge explosions and then up until they find a band of mercenaries known as the Legionaries who are smuggling gold the story turns from a typical fighting game to the pursuit of gold. As the B-Company say every solider has a purpose of fighting and they found a pretty good one. The story has seven missions, which doesn’t sound a lot but the game has a good length to it. The battlefield you are given for the story missions are huge and it makes you feel like you are part of the world as you can tackle the terrain any way you want.
The multiplayer is the place where Battlefield shines the most. Taking all of the elements of the single player and putting them into the multiplayer is really something. Blowing up houses, driving the many vehicles from tanks, APC’s, jeeps, boats and flying helicopters they all have there strengths and weaknesses. This is the beauty of Bad Company Online it is balanced sure you might get frustrated by the many snipers but there is something to kill them with.
There are five classes sniper gets a sniper and a laser designator to target enemy vehicles for bomb drops, the support class get a machine gun and mortar strike but also has a medic kit to heal allies and a drill to heal allied vehicles. Assault is your standard gunner, demolition is the standard demo man and specialist class has a device to target enemy vehicles to make allied rockets home in on them.
There are eight maps that vary in size, from small but heavily filled with buildings to large open areas for tanks and helicopters to rule at. The ranking system is similar to Call of Duty 4. There are 25 ranks to climb up and every so often when you rank up you get a point to spend on a weapon or gadget of your choice like a mortar strike or mines. This works very well and to add to it there are unlock able trophies and awards like the challenges on Call of Duty 4 but more flushed out. There is only one game mode called Gold Rush where the Attackers have to destroy two Gold crates to get more re-enforcements to stay in the game. While the Defenders have to just defend the gold crates and cut down the Attackers re-enforcement bar.
All in all with many vehicles, weapons and explosions this game delivers on everything. The story even though is weak it is far better than any other Battlefield single player and the multiplayer even though it only has one mode is it so fun that is will surely keep you going until the conquest mode is released. This is one of the most fun games I have played in a long time and is definitely worth checking out.
