Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Winged, usually flying creatures, many of which enjoy perching on branches and defecating on unfortunate victims below.
A concept found in many puzzle and casual games. Matching blocks of the same color or type to gain points and/or erase the blocks.
An insect with broad colorful wings.
Feline animals commonly kept as pets. There are many different breeds and varieties.
The ultimate pressure feature. Players have to complete the task at hand, be it defeating opponents or cutting the right wire, in the allotted time.
A special challenge mode offered by some games in which players test themselves against a predetermined scenario, which changes each day.
Each real-world day, an often competitive piece of content unlocks itself for play. This can be a specific seed for an otherwise procedurally-generated level as in Spelunky, or a wider multiplayer community challenge a la the community goals in Halo Reach.
The concept of purchasing media and having it delivered over the internet. No physical representation of this content is given, and although the content resides on the user's hard drive they are typically granted a license to the product, rather than ownership of it.
A powerful release of energy. This energy is usually expelled in all directions very quickly, typically giving off orange or red flames.
Free to Play titles allow a user to play a version of the game without paying an initial purchase fee, but generally require the purchase of microtransactions to access additional content.
A glitch is an action performed within the bounds of a game engine that was not intended by the game's developers. Glitches are often performed by the player, though they can also occur independently.
With the internet in full swing, some games reflect its leak into popular culture by making references to the World Wide Web.
Games that allow the player to choose which level to play next, rather than a fixed linear order.
The concept of lives in video games evolved to let the player get a second chance after failing once. The most recognizable symbol is the heart.
Small payments made with actual money which result in an in-game bonus, such as an extra item, character, etc...
A species of cetacean with a long tusk.
Levels whose visual design represents objects or symbols (including text).
Referencing a TV show, celebrity, song, trend, historical event, etc. is one of the easiest ways to get a laugh. This can be either a throw-away gag, like the name of an achievement, or the main subject of the game.
You don't know how to play our game, so we'll teach you how.
Characters whose purpose is to convey information that is directly or indirectly aimed at the player.
Unity is a multiplatform game development suite, designed from the start for the ease of creation. It's completely free to use with a pro version available for more advanced features and export options.
A middleware engine for game audio, developed by Audiokinetic Inc.
