Blood is a First-Person Shooter from Monolith using the Build Engine, built by Ken Silverman. It features Caleb, a now-undead cultist dedicated to the god Tchernobog who wants some questions surrounding the betrayal and destruction of his cult answered, and he'll use any means he can to get those answers.
Blood played very much like Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior, insofar as the way the engine handled height and environment interactivity, such as pushing a button to feed a fallen enemy into a cremation furnace and have a power-up drop from the other end. Much like Shadow Warrior, the game features a rather eclectic selection of weapons to employ against your foes, ranging from the more straightforward-but-still-uncommon Tommy Gun, to tools being used as weapons, like the pitchfork, lighter-plus-aerosol can, and flare guns, to the outright strange like the voodoo doll.
Another similarity to Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior was Blood's dark and self-referential sense of humor. Caleb does everything from cackling evilly when setting an enemy ablaze with a flare gun, to quoting movies like Army of Darkness when rising back to life, to even quietly whistling showtunes to himself while the player is idle on the controls. The interactivity in the game was also used to bring humor to the table with scenarios like a twisted carnival with actual working midway games that yield prizes when successfully accomplished.
Blood share the same engine used for Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior, the Build engine, which was what 3D Realms was using at the time.
Legacy
Blood has one sequel, Blood II: The Chosen, which pioneered the Lithtech engine, found in its more advanced stages powering games like F.E.A.R., No One Lives Forever, Condemned: Criminal Origins, and many other popular games. The game also has multiple expansion packs.
There is an official expansion to Blood, produced my Monolith Productions, is called the Blood Plasma Pak, which adds a new episode, additional "bloodbath" (multiplayer) levels, new enemies, expanded arsenal and it patched the game up to v1.10. The game also had an official expansion developed by a third party, Sunstorm Interactive, released before the plasma pak. It contained a new episode, additional multiplayer levels and a brand new ending cinematic (essentially a slideshow). Blood and both of the expansions were later released in a box set called "One Unit Whole Blood".
Blood is an ultraviolent first-person shooter that brings equal parts of blood and gore and humor to the table.
