Bombermania!
I’m a relatively new Bomberman fan, so please, take that into account while you read this review.
The Bomberman franchise makes some of the greatest multiplayer games of all time. It really is the perfect mixture of action and strategy that make this game what it is. The franchise has always had a good track record, until the infamous Act Zero hit store shelves for the 360. This is there way of redeeming that bomb.
Right when you fire up the game, you’re greeted by a hilarious bomberman dancing around. That is really the essence of this game, as it never takes itself to seriously. When I went to the offline mode, I was disappointed to see the options available. I was hoping there would be some sort of career or tournament mode where you had to work your way through various challenges, but instead you get the option of playing a single game, or a series of games of the same mode. The actual game modes and arenas to choose from are quite impressive. You get to customize every little thing about the game, down to exactly what you can pick up while you’re playing. I personally like straight-up bomberman, but if you have any other preference to the type of mode you want, you’re sure to find it.
The AI is solid, as they generally know what they are doing, but they are quite predictable, as the often do the same things over and over. They tend to keep up well, and are fine if you just want to spend 5 or 10 minutes messing around with the controls. The only problem, though, is the fact that in order to unlock new uniforms for your bomberman, you have to play single player games.
But in the end, who cares? This franchise is all about multiplayer, and the game really shines through in that department. All of those customizable options that you tinkered with offline are also available on Live, plus you have the option of playing in tournaments. Playing against real life people in this game is really a hoot, as you get to see all the different strategies people use. Plus, it’s always interesting to see the different outfit combinations people have on. Oh, and by the way, it’s all been lag free in the 15 or so games I’ve played.
So, in summary, Bomberman Live! is the perfect game for you, as long as you have a Gold membership to Live. It’s an absolute riot online and a game that everyone needs to pick up.
