I went back to play Braid and just realized there are gold stars you can collect. I never knew this. Is there anyone who knows what they do, never knew about this, or has found them all?

I've gotten a couple of them. The easiest one is the one embedded in the World 3 painting. I don't think anyone really knows their purpose though, I've seen a few talks/lectures given by Blow and he has refused to answer questions about them.

They have a slightly significant impact on the end of the game. Most of them are extremely hard to get, and one even takes about 2 hours. It's a fun little challenge though!
It makes one of the switches time powers in the final level, which gives you enough time to actually physically touch the princess before she reaches her house. When Tim does this, the princess explodes.

They don't do much and they are the best hidden objects I have ever seen in a video game. You're going to have to do some obscure stuff to get them all. Even if you know a level has a star, it's unlikely that you will be able to get it.
