Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Backtracking is the act of navigating through previously explored areas, usually for the purpose of progressing in an objective-based adventure game. Players who are lost may also backtrack to reorient themselves.

Attitudes towards the Clown vary from person to person. Some find entertainment and humor, others feel really creeped out by their overly flamboyant nature. Ultimately, games tend to take the path of a more horrific presentation to stimulate the atmosphere of a particular setting.
A style of game that has platforming elements, but with more emphasis placed on fighting enemies than precise maneuvering through the level and its obstacles. Notable examples include Ratchet & Clank and early Ninja Gaiden games.

In video games, dithering is a graphical technique using pixel patterns to simulate additional colors or transparency. While far more common on CRTs, many games still use the technique, especially games which use pixel art.

Tiny, annoying hunchbacked enemies in the Castlevania series.
A frog is a small and usually green amphibian that can swim, hop, and ribbit. Sadly, most of them aren't princes.
Game Over originally appeared in pinball machines, and later, arcade machines. When players lose at a game, it is game over.
Magical creatures made of stone, resembling the grotesque statues commonly part of Gothic architecture such as the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.
Health is a value that gauges how much damage players can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as life in some games. Health is usually represented by a bar or a percentage instead of an exact amount. Found in most non sport games
In the Fullmetal Alchemist universe, a homunculus is a being that seeks to be human. They are created when a person has failed to resurrect someone from the dead with Alchemy. They look exactly like the dead person who was being revived except they have tattoos on their bodies.
Equines that go 'neigh' and tend to eat hay. Some are the stars of motion pictures. The truest of companions to many adventurers.
It's arguably the one move that symbolizes the medium to those outside it. The ability to jump, be it onto a building, a platform, or a skull, is one of the all time most important abilities ever put in a video game.
A heavily armored soldier in the service of a lord or cause. Typically a champion of good and a defender of the innocent.

Medusa Heads are found in Castlevania games. They fly around trying to collide into the player.
Creatures that are usually part fish and part human.
Drenched in muck, these zombies crawl around all fours, making them difficult to spot. When struck by one, a survivor's screen will be splattered with a muddy effect, hampering a players view.
A large wild cat, which typically comes in either black, white and pink varieties.
