I thought this was supposed to be an action RPG.

But the gameplay trailer showed only the main character climbing a wall while a giant hand tries to stab him with a fork.

I really hope that is not the only gameplay in this game.... Does anyone have an idea what this is actually going to be?

It was never really said it was an action RPG There was speculation..

It even says on the Play Asia page for where they sell the game it's labeled strategy. And more or less yes that is the gameplay of the game, other than that you will be going to the bar and busy with texting Catherine and Katherine trying to keep them happy as you duck and dodge seeing both of them until you come to a decision on who you want.

Almost from the get-go, ATLUS' Persona team stated that they were intentionally straying away from their known formula to make something new. Eventually, they straight out said that this was absolutely not going to be an RPG. The core gameplay of Catherine can reductively be defined as being a puzzle-platformer.

Its got some traditional adventure game gameplay to, but  besides that, we've known for a looooooooooooong time now that Catherine was going to be a puzzle platformer. Don't know where you read that it was  going to be a rpg in any sense.

The gameplay confuses the hell out of me. Even knowing it wouldn't be an RPG, I still don't get it.. but I want it for some reason.

I'm a lot more worried about the story! Never played a poorly designed game coming  from Atlus R&D1.

But then again, I'm a huge Atlus whore.

It seems like the nighttime nightmare sequences will be puzzle based, but from what I've gathered reading the articles you'll spend the day time doing traditional adventure RPG/storyline/plot/character interaction and what-have-you.

I don't think that there is a game, I think they've just been spending the last couple years making those trailers.

It's made by Atlus. Therefore I must play it, regardless of whatever genre it ends up as.

Yeah I was pretty confused in the Quick Look there.

I'm fine with it. I think JRPGs are effin boring, but Persona was great for the characters n dialogue stuff.
So as long as there's that, I'll deal with some block puzzle minigame every few minutes.

since the very beginning it was know that Catherine wasn't a RPG, and the last couple trailers showed clearly segments with the puzzle gameplay

I just hope the gameplay formula will get more evolved. After the Quick Look it almost feel i've seen everything the game has to offer. Nightmare = block platformer puzzler. Real life = typical JRPG interaction and dating sim. But man, the art style, the camera work and the "WTF"-moments are awesome, and that alone is a good reason why i would purchase this game... If it comes out where i live that is.

gameplay is actually one of the top points for me, I found the fighting insanely boring in persona 3 and 4. I remember spending two hours once on figuring out myself a... Five step fusion I think it was? All so I didn't have to level up the six levels I needed to be at for the usual way people solved that fusion challenge. I blame persona 1, it made me realize I want more strategy in a system like the persona games have, otherwise its just something to suffer through.

Catherine demo on the other hand I had fun playing :) simple set up, but lots you can do with it. I love a good puzzle, and the mix of strategy and speed made it even more interesting.

Doesn't bother me. The gameplay seemed cool, and I've always wished I could endure the mind-numbing grind of JRPGs just to experience the stylistic and narrative stylings of the Atlus games.

I'm really intrigued by the obvious game play metaphor and curious how far they're going to take it, story-wise. So yeah, day one purchase, I think.

Also, nice to see good looking characters in a Gamebryo powered game!

JRPGs are boring, this looks less boring to actually play. Assuming they introduce new facets to the puzzles at an even keel. Instead of thinking of it as "omg fuk this i want bufu" think of it like "finally, a puzzle game with story elements that doesn't suck a fat cock like Puzzle Quest, yay".
