Jackson was the only child of Melburn and Claire Jackson; archaeologists killed while helping to install a piece of Egyptian art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After this event, Jackson was placed into foster care due to his Grandfather being unwilling to care for him. Jackson studied to become an archaeologist and linguist, coming up with a theory that the pyramids of Giza were used as landing sites for extraterrestrial space ships.
Shortly after presenting his theory at an academic sceminar to little or no interest, Jackson is approached by and subsequently recruited by Dr. Catherine Langford, the daughter of the man who first discovered the Stargate. Whilst working for Dr. Langford under the auspices of the United States Air Force Dr. Jackson discovered the final chevron needed to successfully dial the gate - the point of origin.
Jackson joined the expedition through the Stargate alongside Colonel Jack O'Neill and a team of Airmen, they subsequently discovered and defeated the system lord Ra, freeing the people of Abydos - the planet which the team arrived at.
Dr. Jackson chose not to return to Earth after Ra was defeated instead he remained on Abydos to study their culture and married a native woman, Sha're. At the beginning of the television series, Dr. Jackson returned to earth and joined SG-1 alongside Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter and Teal'c.
