Lieutenant General George S. Hammond was, at the time, United States Air Force Major General who succeeded Major General West in the command of Stargate Command located at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex. As a Lieutenant, Hammond was stationed at Cheyenne Mountain during the Cold War in 1969.

As the Commander of Stargate Command, Hammond was directly responsible for the day to day operations of the base and its personnel and the Stargate itself, but rarely took off-world visits himself.

In the Season 7 finale, newly inaugurated President Henry Hayes replaces Hammond with Dr. Elizabeth Weir under the advisement of Senator Robert Kinsey, who strongly opposes the SGC's existence. After this event, Hammond is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and is placed in command of the newly created department of Homeworld Security. Brigadier General Jack O'Neill replaced Dr Weir soon after.

Hammond remained at the department of Homeworld Security until his retirement in season 10 of Stargate SG-1, he later died of a heart attack, as mentioned by Colonel Samantha Carter in the final episode of Stargate Atlantis; the Daedelus-class ship Phoenix had its named changed to the George Hammond in his honor.
