Teal'c is a member of SG-1, the primary operations team of Stargate Command, and is a member of an alien race known as the Jaffa. The Jaffa are genetically altered humans, who do not have their own immune systems, instead relying on a symbiote Goa'uld which lives in a pouch in their stomachs and gives them great healing and strength.
Prior to joining SG-1, Teal'c was the First Prime of Apophis, a Goa'uld System Lord. As First Prime he acted as General and bodyguard to the System Lord, and carried out many acts of torture and murder in his name.
He was unable to believe that a god (which Apophis was claiming to be) would make him do such things, and in an attempt to free his own enslaved people, he rebelled, killing several of his former allies and freeing Jack, Daniel and Sam in the process.
Over the next 10 years (and beyond) Teal'c would prove time and time again than he is a good man, and has fought to save Earth from an array of threats hundreds of times.
Unaccustomed to Earth's customs, Teal'c often comes across as aloof and strange. However in his time as a member of SG-1, he makes many friends and grows to think of Earth as his home.
