Oh Dead Rising 2.
The last time i felt this way was probably playing "Paper Boy" on the Amstrad CPC 464... though i could list many other examples of that era.
Feeling sooooo pissed off at the clunkiness of a game and it's shortcomings...but still wanting to see more.... wanting to overcome these shortcoming and be victorious despite them.
Back in the old days FEW games where what you could consider polished with "tight" controls, but it's what we had. We took what we were given and did what we were asked to achieve. Most of the time it was possible...with trial and error.. though occasionally a game would be just so broken it could not be won even if you played with as much perfection as you could muster.
Dead Rising 2 much like it's predecessor asks you to do much but fails to give you that elements you need to satisfactorily do so with ease... even with a max level character. But something about it speaks to that old school gamer in me that wants to win regardless. So i persevere... i don't have the tools, then i shall learn to game the system... Run to a spot that a Boss can't follow and take a sneaky pot shot... why not...?... they would.
I am very much enjoying this game despite it's shortcomings... and though this would not really get it an "excellent" rating in this day and age, if this game was on PSOne or SNES (with older graphics) it would be definatly triple A.
Dead Rising 2
Game » consists of 18 releases. Released Sep 02, 2010
Dead Rising 2 is a third-person action-adventure survival horror game that takes place five years after the end of the original Dead Rising, moving its zombie apocalypse setting into the glamorous Fortune City.
Bringing back old school.... difficulty.
Update:
I'm finding it easier than i thought to tackle some of the psycho battles than i previously expected. Sure there's been one or two cheap deaths and getting a vomiting fit while trying to regen health is about as poor a development judgment call as Malaria in Far Cry 2, but i found that some battles require just "manning up" (if that can be a verb) and throwing yourself at them. Most enemies are more dangerous at range it seems.
It's actually a much easier game than the first. I found navigation the biggest hurdle really....the first game was pain until level 40+.
I enjoy (read relish) the way the game is difficult. I'm not a fan of playing other games with difficulty levels on higher levels because I feel games are designed to be balanced at a certain level, and changing that level makes things either unbalanced or too easy (read not fun either way) I think these games are just designed to be hard and balanced at that hard level.
So yes, you yell and scream and rage quit, and don't play for days. But you come back for more.
I'm finding very little difficulty with the psychos at this moment as well, but that's mainly because I'm a cheap bastard as well, probably cheaper than the psychos themselves. But still, having said that the game is still dang hard. Especially with the navigation, the place is like a damn maze, and because there are so many zombies on screen at one time, it's easy to get lost in the crowds. Although in psycho battles, the zombies are usually cleared out, so I can scan the field and move around with ease. Also, rolling helps a lot more than I had previously thought.
I never played a ton of the first one (maybe 5 or 6 hours). But, Dead Rising 2 is pretty darn easy by comparison. Maybe it is because I knew going into it that every time you are even remotely near a bathroom to save your progress. But, I guess I am 6 or 7 hours in and I have only died once. I am sure the game gets much more difficult later. But, for now, I am just methodically plodding my way through the game.
The leadership magazine has also made the game much easier. None of my survivors have been attacked in quite some time because of it.
Dead Rising 2 isn't difficult.@owl_of_minerva said:

i got frustrated with the game.. wtf.. get off me... ugh.. i'm dead again.. this is lame...
I found it best just not to kill zombies and walk past them.. which makes me sad. It could be that i'm just bad.. but i was having no fun pointlessly dieing all the time. Atleast it was cheap on the PC ^_^
hey, i did finally finish singulaity because i was in a game playing mood and dr2 pissed me off.. i liked that game (on the PC). they fixed the minor texture streaming problems too in a patch :)
It is in a shop on the Silver Strip, right next door to the wedding chapel. There is paramedic survivor, trying to save a dead man, he gives you Zombrex for saving him. The magazine is on the table near the guy.
Ninja Gaiden (the Xbox one, not original) is actually a game I felt very much suffered from this.
It's renowned for its difficulty, but I felt much of this came from enemies with cheap attacks, coupled with the poor and clunky control.
Perhaps this was meant to be 'old school' but I just thought it felt dated.
Much much easier than the last game. My DR1 experience helped some with what I should be doing and not doing, but the improved survivor AI and easy to make spiked bats also factor in. I obviously didn't 100% my first run through, but I made it through the whole game without having to restart at a higher level. The psycho battles are still broken and take a few tries, but that's about it. Escorting survivors is now incredibly easy (just run!) and as long as you keep a couple good weapons and food items on you at all times, you'll never really have trouble.
Only died once so far. Fucking Leon. Just couldn't get away from him and didn't have the right weapon to take him out on the slicycle. Got creamed. Realized I didn't save for about a half hour. Restarted the story. Haven't activated him yet. Probably going to get something that does better ranged damage first.
It can get pretty tough once you hit day four. But overall the game isn't too bad, I'll agree.

"The Navigation arrow lead me to a dead end at a time critical moment that would be a path, only i guess it wasn't activated yet... Yeah you gotta watch that thing, it can screw you over real bad.
" It can get pretty tough once you hit day four. But overall the game isn't too bad, I'll agree.Eh, I thought he was the easiest of the psychos. He at least has some obvious openings and low health or takes a lot of damage. Now the psycho before him was the one that pissed me off. Because he has a moment of invulnerability after he rolls, something Chuck ought to have because of that damn pause after he rolls.
"Though the T.K boss battle in Overtime is some twisted BS
I agree that it feels a bit easier than DR1 and the two main factors are spike bats readily available by the safe room and better survivors. The initial weapons weren't that great in DR1 and you had to learn about where to find the swords, guns, and mini-chainsaw, so you struggled through poorly equipped at first. DR2 seems to make it much easier to get some decent basic equipment. Was the movement improved? It feels easier to weave between zombies, maybe its the wider areas.

Making a good, hard game isn't easy. That line between an interesting challenge and challenge resulting from poor controls, randomness, or throwing things at the player they have no control over is very thing. I think DR's (1 and 2) psychos probably lean towards the unavoidable attacks category. Just having the right items mitigates that, making psycho fights a bit more about preparation. The reason why we see easy games more often than difficult games these days is because it is so easy for a difficult game to take a wrong turn and turn into a bad or mediocre game. It takes a smart developer to make a game that is challenging and hard, but not punishing.
"I feel like Chuck is definitely a tad more responsive than Frank... And the Zombies are stupider.DR2 seems to make it much easier to get some decent basic equipment. Was the movement improved?. "
But man i miss Frank... yeah he was clunky in control and design but his jump kick was probably... in my opinion... the best combat animation in any video-game.
I've found most of the game to be ridiculously easy. I only started having problems with the later zombies. I guess it all depends on how you play the game to begin with, I went into it expecting to fail and that took longer than expected. The game is a hundred times easier than the first, levelling takes almost no time at all, survivors...survive (ive never ever given them extra weapons or used the leadership magazine...it's useless) and save points are in almost every location. the wolverine boxing gloves destroy most bosses and the time limits are really quite forgiving. I have found myself with many hours free at points in the game because I had done all that can be done on a given day.
Slappy is actually incredibly easy once you realize you can go downstairs and fight him. Just put some distance between you and him, he'll shoot a couple of easily avoidable fireballs, and then charge you and end up falling down when he misses which opens him up for attack. Rinse and repeat. Can easily and quickly be done without taking any damage at all.

Just.. Why. Capcom. Why.
Why couldn't you give Blue Castle more freedom with this game? This game is so goddamn japanese I feel like eating sushi, and I'm allergic to fish (no lie). I just ran out of time on a case, because I wanted to do a few side quests, and forgot to look at the time. I mean fuck that. Such archaic and terrible game design, there's a reason why we got rid of that. Sigh. Getting a trainer, since I have the PC version. Really can't be arsed time constraints, it feels like a 20-odd hour time trial. Stress stress stress, plus stupid inventory management up the ass.

The challenge is time and inventory management, try harder.
