Dead Space 2 is new on shelves and fresh on our minds, so it’s only natural that EA is taking this opportunity to announce the game’s first bit of add-on campaign content, Dead Space 2: Severed. According to EA, Severed is a standalone, two-mission romp that runs parallel to the events that go down in Dead Space 2's core campaign.

Interestingly, Severed will feature the two main leads in Dead Space: Extraction, Gabe Weller and Lexine Murdoch. Details are light, but EA is confirming that you’ll play as Weller, a Sprawl security guard, in an attempt to escape the Necromorph horde with Murdoch.

Dead Space: Severed will see a release “soon” over Xbox Live Marketplace and PSN for an unspecified price. No PC version of the content has been announced at this time.

That's pretty cool they're following up on some of the material in Extraction.    I was afraid they were just going to abandon it since only myself and like 4 other people bought it.  :(

This is the kind of DLC I can get behind, stuff that doesn't just feel like it was ripped out of the main game to sell.

Looking forward to seeing how much playtime these 2 missions will get me for $10.

Does that mean that Lexine and Weller don't show up in Dead Space 2? D: And I'm glad Weller was the one who survived. That guy is cool.

Well there were 2 guys along with Lexine who escaped. Gabe and the one who slashed his arm off. Guess the latter was the one who turned into a necromorph.

Extraction was an on-rail shooter so it made sense for the Wii and later for the PS Move.

Hmm, I'll be curious to see if leaving Extraction out of the 360 version will effect DLC numbers.

I was on the fence as to whether to run right out and buy DS2, this has teetered me a little towards the "wait" for a deal side of things - be that deal a sale, a used copy or a GotY edition.

Personally I don't have an issue with this being DLC rather than included in the main game. It seems something that is non-essential to the story of Isaac Clarke in Dead Space and means more to people who actually played through Extraction.

Look at it this way; its a game driven by single player, so you need to let gamers know that they are supporting you game to keep you from getting rid of it.  If you seen the comments on Kotaku, you'd think EA announced "we are only including the first hour of the game on disc and the rest is DLC".  Whiney gamers who here "DLC" before a game is out need to take a breath before they start ranting over something that hasnt even had a date on it. Some of these people think that a developer cant even start work on DLC until they have the disc in their system.  This is also a reason why no none of these people actually know nothing about  business other than flipping burgers.  Calm down and do not panic.

Yes i know that, but jeffk38uk said, "Can't they put extraction on a console besides ps3 and wii?" To which i replied, why not just say 360.

Also the move is not required to play extraction, while that sounds dumb since you will just be moving a cursor around the screen with your analog sticks, you can still play it. I know i will be playing extraction that way since i do not own a move. They could do the same thing for 360. Obviosuly they dont though because of sony's and ea's recent partnership.

Personally, this is the style of DLC I can get behind-- the kind that stands on its own, tells its own story, and doesn't make you feel like you're having an incomplete experience without it.
I hate being in the weird position of having to decide whether an optional gun is going to break the difficulty balance, or where in the game's story arc a DLC side-mission will actually fit properly, or whether it's going to break the flow, and is any of this even supposed to be canon, and oh god whatever.
This, Undead Nightmare, Minerva's Den, and the GTA IV episodes. That's the way to do it.
Not this Dragon Age "bolt a hundred doodads onto the side of your ship and hope it still floats" mentality.
    Mass Effect 2, you're borderline.
You're just lucky all that stuff was actually pretty good.

Just a heads up for those who bought the PS3 version. You can play extraction with a controller, it doesn't require the move.  You miss some of the fun, but you can get through it and still enjoy it without dropping that extra 100 bucks.

so no PC again? come on. dead space franchise seems to be successful. it will be next call of duty at least. I think that its demand will be higher. EA better make PC DLC. I just purchased DS2 collector's edition today (PC version). I usually support a big game a lot. there are three small DLC also appeared on xbox live. suit & weapon packages. these should be available for PC as well. they underestimate PC gamers. there are still a lot more than console gamers. MS even announced something important thing for PC game last year before updating brand new games for windows. they promised that MS will support PC significantly. this will change game. so come on, EA. better do it.

You dont need the Move to play Extraction. Although with the Move it is the best experience, you can use the regular controller in PS3.

Wasn't there a third survivor from Extraction, Nathan McNeill?  I guess he died or something. I'm interested in seeing how their story plays out. In Extraction they set  Lexine up as an important character to the fiction.

I should probably have a problem with this but I don't. Considering it's dealing with characters not primary to the main storyline, and is just an excuse for more awesome dead space action.

As a developer it makes sense for Dead Space 2 to be a well polished complete story and to have DLC that doesn't just extend that same narrative. In that way I don't feel slighted because it's clear I don't have to play this in order to get the full DS2 experience.

this is what DLC should be just like mass effect 2 DLC. story based. that's what I want. I don't want damn MP mode map packs or armor skin & weapon pack. that's just stupid.
