Phew, Descent WiiWare Still in Development...Wait, What?

Prepare the vomit bag!
Having the word "descent" in a headline yesterday squirreled the nausea-inducing Descent series into my head. It also reminded me that Interplay once tasked someone with porting Descent to WiiWare. There's been nothing on Descent for WiiWare in nearly a year, though, so I decided to ask the question all the other gaming writers of the world weren't willing to ask: what happened to Descent for WiiWare?

Turns out it's still alive at developer G1M2, who last worked on SNK Arcade Classics 0 for PSP.

"Thank you for asking us about Descent for Wii," said a company spokesperson. "It is still in development and we are hopeful that the project will be completed soon. While it has taken longer than expected, we are hopeful that people will like the final product when it comes out. More details to come soon..."

One less mystery of the world to solve, guys.  (Nobody tell Jeff about this.)

wiiware news ftw!

I could go with some proper Descent. Loved that music.

#7 Posted by Eribuster (483 posts) -

WiiMotion Plus six axis navigation. Oh man, that would be so sick in many ways.

Same here. Kind of curious how a modern Descent title would look and play. Wouldn't mind a PSN/XBLA/Steam release of 1 and 2 with online multiplayer either.

I'd buy an updated Descent on WiiWare if it controlled well.

#10 Posted by OldManLollipop (306 posts) -

Who got nauseous playing Descent? I played that game for three years straight and never got sick playing it.

#11 Posted by chrominance (19 posts) -

I bought a Saitek Cyborg Evo on the off chance that a) I would replay the Descent and Freespace games, and b) that maybe, possibly, someday they'd make a modern Descent or Freespace. That zero-g ship section in Red Faction: Armageddon is the closest I've seen yet to a modern Descent.

Also really curious to see how a Wiiware version of Descent works! Can't even figure out how the flight controls would work.

Just reminded me of picking up Descent and Tunnel B1 on the same day, one game got played the hell out of, the other got played once. I still don't know what Tunnel B1 was meant to be.

Man, I could remember playing Descent on the computer they had in my homeroom in middle school. Those were the days.

#14 Posted by StealthRaptor (526 posts) -

Patrick Klepek always asking the hard hitting questions like "Hey, is Descent for WiiWare cancelled?"

#19 Posted by Sin4profit (2908 posts) -

i missed out on Decent, never played one, so i wouldn't mind checking it out at this point to see what the talk is about.

#20 Posted by umdesch4 (772 posts) -

Oh man, those crazy 6DOF games are the best! While they're at it, I'd go for another kick at Forsaken. Remember this?

#21 Posted by Cheapoz (1064 posts) -
@umdesch4: Forsaken was THE BEST.

Pine Mine.
Solaris.
Pine Mine.
TITAN.

LOVED IT.

Descent on the 3DS might be the game that actually gives me motion sickness.

#26 Posted by ch13696 (4582 posts) -

I bought all the Descents at a thrift store in mint condition a few months back. Still haven't played them yet.

I love Descent. All 3 games are for sale on GOG.com for cheap.

Anyone that loved Descent should also check out Miner Wars, as it's basically a new age Descent clone with awesome tech.

I have the OpenGL port of Descent 2 on my computer as we speak. I was able to play it off the disk (DOS Box is the coolest thing ever), but couldn't resist high resolution.

#31 Posted by SuperfluousMoniker (2907 posts) -

I'd play a remake of Descent. Damn fun game.

#32 Posted by Godzilla_Sushi (1084 posts) -

Personally, I liked the Virtual Boy version. I lost my vision, but games couldn't have gotten any better then that anyway, right?

Finally a title i might buy from wiiware

#34 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11478 posts) -

Already Patrick Klepek is pulling his weight around here. Not only do I now know that Descent is being made for wii ware, but also that there is a video game called Descent!

OMG the Descent game?! Man, that is soooo ancient.

#38 Edited by voltan (103 posts) -

I was 14 when Descent came out. We played it on school computers(We just got new computers). Never had any stomach problems.
I feel old.

I remember playing the crap about this game with VooDoo 3000, I loved that video card!

#41 Posted by Ley_Lines (252 posts) -

Am I the only person who read that as DECENT wiiware?

#42 Posted by Tebbit (4449 posts) -

I freakin' love Decent.

It's gonna be hell on the Wii though, unless they make a joystick attachment.

Descent + Sidewinder3D = i was a god of the tunnelz

#44 Posted by CozmoD (15 posts) -

Are they going to make it less nausea inducing? I hope so. I hope that's the reason for the delay. I remember how motion sick this game used to make me. Nothing made me more sick, though, than Wolfenstein 3D

#45 Posted by lockwoodx (2479 posts) -

It was a bad game then. Men stuck with quake.

Descent + 3D: possibly the ultimate vomit trip

#47 Posted by MadExponent (305 posts) -
@Rave: i c wat u did ther
#48 Posted by reddin (417 posts) -

The only things I remember from Descent are tunnels and feeling sick.

So this would have been more interesting to me if this was a story about Decent WiiWare, which this could turn out to be I guess, but is otherwise pretty rare.
#49 Posted by Shaanyboi (1270 posts) -

I remember having a copy of Descent 3. I was pretty young at the time, and pretty confused as to what I should be doing
