    Hey everyone,

I wanted all of you to be some of the first to know that I've made an important decision about my future, and how that decision will affect the future of Diablo.

I recently celebrated my seven-year anniversary working on Diablo III, and while it's been one of the most challenging and rewarding periods of my life, I've reached a point creatively where I'm looking forward to working on something new. The powers that be at Blizzard have been gracious enough to give me that opportunity. Over the course of the next several weeks, I will be moving off of the Diablo III project and transitioning elsewhere within Blizzard. This decision was not an easy one for me, and not one I made quickly, but ultimately it's what I feel is right.

The first thing I want to assure you all is that this will not negatively impact our ongoing support of Diablo III. The game was not made by one person, far from it, and the team that poured their passion and considerable talent into it isn't going anywhere. We have lots of things planned for the future, and those plans will carry forward as normal. I also won't be abandoning the team, and will remain available to them during the transition period while we determine who will take over duties as game director.

To that point, you shouldn't be surprised if you see a job posting for a game director on Diablo III, as we want to make sure we explore every opportunity to find the best possible leadership for the project. We're looking forward to finding this person and hearing what kind of fresh ideas they can bring to the table.

I'm proud of Diablo III, and despite our differences at times I will miss the community that has formed around it. I feel I have made many mistakes in managing that relationship, but my intent was always to provide a great gaming experience, and be as open and receptive as possible, while still sticking true to the vision the Diablo team has for the game.

I know some of you feel we fell short of our promise to release the game "when it's ready." While we're not perfect, we try to make the best decisions we can with the information and knowledge we have at the time. That doesn't mean we always make the right decisions, but if we made a mistake then I feel we've made an exceptional effort to correct it.

This is what you can always count on from Blizzard: that we will stand by our games and make every effort to continually improve them over time. We heard the feedback and suggestions from the community. For example, we agreed that Diablo III's itemization at launch was not good enough, so the team made numerous changes, including changing drop rates, re-tuning legendaries, and adding scores of new items to the game. We also agreed that the end game needed more depth, so the team added new events, and new systems like Monster Power and Paragon levels.

Our commitment to making our games as good as they can be is what has always defined Blizzard as a game studio, and that commitment never ends for us at a ship date. With your help, we'll continue to play, debate, and improve Diablo III, as we've done with every Blizzard game.

To that end, patch 1.0.7 is underway, the PTR is live, and there are many other great things brewing for Diablo in 2013. I'm leaving Diablo III in good hands, and my departure will not jeopardize the progress of the game as we continue to do what we do: listen, play, and improve.

You are the most passionate, dedicated group of gamers a designer could hope to have. I wish you all the best, and want to thank you for making this an amazing experience for me. Keep your axes sharp, your spell books handy, and that crafty devil in check.

    --Jay

Yeah, that's a long time to work on a game. I look forward to his next project and the continued evolution of D3.

It's probably too late for this to really have any effect on Diablo 3 (at least until an expansion). I'm not sure it's entirely his fault that Diablo 3 is somewhat of a letdown, but some change probably couldn't hurt the game at this point.

That being said, after what he said on Facebook during that whole debacle makes me dislike him, so I'm glad he's not involved with the game anymore.

Interesting. He was, like, also the mouth piece of D3, right? I remember his name and a lot of ire (some of it appropriate) being aimed towards him.

It's weird to see him leave now that D3 seems to actually be shaping into an interesting game but... I'll never bother going back to it because the original version was what I played the most and that left bad vibes once Inferno kicked in.

I really hope they are able to put out an expansion for D3, without this guy, and make it a much better game.

You should, if nothing else, try it out again now or when 1.07 hits. The game they released in May was pretty fucking terrible (I would know; I beat Inferno Diablo at the end of May and then quit because there was nothing to do after that), but I started playing again in November and am now playing it actively again. The game Diablo III is today is exponentially better than the game they released on May 15, and it's only getting better with 1.07.

@ajamafalous: Yeah? Hmm... my brother has been asking me to play it again so I guess I have an excuse to go back in. Might as well take a first hand look at what has changed.

Also, wow, that game came out in May? It really doesn't feel like it was that long ago.

    too little too late

and dont believe that guy saying "its infinitely better" I played it a good while just recently, they just made everything way easier. The game's focus is still on elites and grinding those elites. They added a paragon system that basically requires an infinite grind for more gold/mf find, which makes MF gear obsolete.

He didn't step down, just transferred to a new project a la Tigole. D3's player retention was obviously horrific but the drive to make Diablo 3 a Free to Play MMO probably came from somewhere else in the company (*cough* Activision *cough*); that said it should have been immensely better and the only really incredible thing about the game is that it runs on a 2004 computer and still looks fine. Voice acting is good too, too bad the storyline was horrible.

Some of those are legit, but does it really matter that the game has no imbuesocket quest? Was the imbue/socket quest in D2 particularly good or central to the game? I didn't think so. Also, I don't get "No use for lower iLvL items at end game". What use was there for lower level items at the end game of D2?

You should, if nothing else, try it out again now or when 1.07 hits. The game they released in May was pretty fucking terrible (I would know; I beat Inferno Diablo at the end of May and then quit because there was nothing to do after that), but I started playing again in November and am now playing it actively again. The game Diablo III is today is exponentially better than the game they released on May 15, and it's only getting better with 1.07.

Ugh, don't make me install it again. I made my peace with it!

    You should too!

D3, 2012's game of 2013? I'm coming around to the idea of re-installing it too...

It's still boring. Just re-installed and played 30 minutes.

Change your build and gear to something more offensive-focused. It's no longer the turtle game of just avoiding death and whittling down enemies that it was in May. If you already did that and still don't like it, then fine, the game's just not for you and that's no skin off my back.

    YES! I had the same thoughts many times! ;_;

...Diablo III is still a "thing"? Hm =-/

Some of those are legit, but does it really matter that the game has no imbuesocket quest? Was the imbue/socket quest in D2 particularly good or central to the game? I didn't think so. Also, I don't get "No use for lower iLvL items at end game". What use was there for lower level items at the end game of D2?

A lot of his list is bullshit things (no inventory tetris, no walking/running, lol), but the two you call into question were actually very important. A lot of D2's endgame gearing was around runewords, for which you needed a white weapon/armor with the correct number of sockets. Since the droprate for those was very low, people would pick up regular white items (or superior white items, which would keep their 'superior' extra damage/armor after they were socketed and become runewords) and use the socket quest to socket their white item in hope of rolling the correct number of sockets for the runeword they wanted to use. There were plenty of times that I had to make a new character and clear up to Act V just so I could use that character's socket quest on a white item, because you could only use the quest once per difficulty per character.

As for the lower ilvl items, in Diablo II most of your stats came from leveling and your modifiers (lifeleech, +skills, etc.) came from your gear. So, for any particular build, it was incredibly possible (and likely) that you would have items ranging anywhere from level 30 to level 70 depending on your class and spec. This is what people complain about when they compare D2's itemization to D3's. D3 is like WoW in that it's for the most part just 'derp lemme get as much of my main stat and vit as possible with the highest DPS weapon I can find.' Legendary items in D3 don't have unique properties like the Uniques did in D2, with things like Wolfhowl (which gave the Barbarian the ability to use some Druid skills, including shapeshifting), Enigma (which gave any class wearing it the ability to teleport), or Call to Arms (which gave any class wielding it the ability to use Barbarian shouts).

That sucks. But maybe it'll get better with Jay off the project at least. Question is if it's gonna be substantially better or not.

Some new blood handling it could be great though, although I can't say I envy his successor. I think it's gonna need an expansion with actual content and a bunch of fixes to the general formula though, in order to be really relevant.

I don't think Diablo 3 is a bad game. But at some point over those seven years, the team calling the shots on D3 lost sight of what made D2 the kind of game that had fans playing up until D3 released.

I had fun in the 150+ hours I put into the game but after seeing the pretty much nonexistent endgame, I don't really feel like I want to go back.

i will give the game another shot at some point- i have a barb parked on inferno, so i'll at least attempt to getter done. but for me, the shine really wore off this game when i realized most of the mechanics (action bar, loot drops, etc.) came from an itch i had thoroughly scratched (and subsequently wore out) with mmo's, other rpgs, and the like. i just found it didn't make the experience compelling/rewarding enough. and it didn't help that the story was mostly forgettable.

it'll be very interesting to see what titan/blizzard looks like into the next generation. they've been successful by releasing very conservative iterations of previous games. something tells me they'll have to take bigger risks this next go-around.

So it has been pointed out in other places that he didn't join Blizzard until 2007. He claims he has been with the Diablo team for 7 years. Even now he can't help but spout bullshit.

I'm gonna guess he was asked to step down here. Never have I seen a community on the scale of Diablo exude such active hate for the person in charge of the project. So unless he is being moved into a similar role for an unannounced project, he probably just got hella demoted.

I enjoy Diablo 3 alot, probably more than the common man. Im really glad that it wasnt just diablo 2.1.

But this guy seems lika a douch, and everytime he talked to the community it was an apollogy, or some retarded lie about the next update. So I really hope that this will steer the game in the right direction (if not, see you in path of exile guys).

I which Jays career as a sound tester for the lost viking iphone version all the best.

People need to relax a bit, even if you don't like what came out of Diablo 3 in the end, blaming Jay Wilson alone is ridiculous - any game is a team effort and you can't blame a single person for not liking a game.
