I loved the old games. I love this just slightly more.
The Rad
- Though not without fault I still found the narrative to be engaging and enjoyed the different take on some classic characters.
- Less punishing then previous games in the series.
- Rad soundtrack.
- Simple but engaging gameplay.
The Bad
- With maybe one exception the boss fights weren't anything to write home about.
- Trivial puzzles do little but slow the action to a grinding halt.
- Finicky platforming sections.
I've never denied that I've traditionally sucked arse at this "character action" genre.
I enjoy the games immensely but they often have spikes in difficulty that rub me the wrong way.
It's never been enough to put me off playing them, but I often find myself becoming frustrated at them.
So that the new Devil May Cry on its default difficulty is something of a cakewalk is welcome news for me, though I know some will likely be put off by the relative lack of challenge.
If people are put off by anything though, it's Dantes new look. New attitude.
Like many I thought the original Dante to be iconic. Like Mario or Sonic, I couldn't ever have envisioned somebody going ahead and rebooting him. I didn't find the idea as repellent as most but it seemed an odd decision, one I personally feel panned out.
I don't see why there can't be room for two takes on the character, just this one is ever so slightly more in line with my personal preferences. His party is still getting cah-razy, just in a different way.
As far as the gameplay goes on the default difficulty there were only a couple of instances in which I had difficulty, but I always had enough healing items to brute force my way through.
I can't say I recall off-hand exactly how previous DmC games handled, but I feel like you can get away with button mashing here a bit more. Every weapon has a couple of simple combos, but the unless you're of a mind to go for the high scores you can get away with not using them.
At the end of the day, as with most things it boils down to personal preference.
I enjoyed the different take on the characters, as someone who isn't terrific at games I appreciated the toned down difficulty, I'm a big fan of the soundtrack and general atmosphere.
This isn't going to be everyone's favorite Devil May Cry, but it's mine dagnabbit.
