Duke Nukem Forever
Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Jun 14, 2011
After approximately fourteen years of development, the heavily infamous sequel to Duke Nukem 3D was finally released, in which the macho Duke must damper yet another alien invasion.
Finally!
i played aboit 30 mins past where the first segment of the demo ended, just to make sure =DStarted up the game, which began with the same sequence that the demo did. Right after I got beyond that sequence, about 10 minutes into the game, I seem to have experienced a bug which does not let me advance further. So I'm still not convinced that the game is real.
Tried it over live which wasn't without its difficulties given it technically doesn't come out here in the UK until today, but yep. It (just about) worked. And that's all I have to say about the multiplayer....
In case anyone is actually interested, as multiplayer is the only part of the game I've spent any real time on, here are my initial impressions.
First off and most notably , the networking code isn't exactly modern... Quick match matching worked about 50% of the time (but again, the game wasn't widely available yesterday). There's an old skool server browser that straight up shows people's pings over live - no traffic light system or anything. So unless people know what these numbers mean, its all a bit pointless. Speaking of the server browser, I could not get into a game through it at all - all games just came up with a version mismatch error, but again, I'll put this down to the game not being available fully at the time. There was a 3MB day 1 patch so maybe this was messing stuff up... Once you're in a game, multiplayer feels like a late 90's PC shooter - its stupid fast, guns and items have spawn points and given how much of an advantage certain guns have over others, I'm going to guess that people will be setting up tents and spending significant portions of time around specific points on the maps. At the moment, people are clearly experimenting, but from even my brief experience of the game, I can tell you now, the shotgun is the one to roll with.
In fairness to it, there appears to be a persistent levelling system there - not sure what this actually unlocks. There are a bunch of hair styles, tops and sunglasses that are initially locked (some of which are tied to the single player), so my guess is these will be the fruits of your labour.
But the load times..... Geez.
The more I play this game, the more I realise the last delay was merely to release it while the majority of the world's game press was too preoccupied with E3 to get reviews out....
If you feel the need to see this thing through to the end like I do - rent DNF.
