An early role-playing shooter released by Arsys Software for the PC-88, PC-98 and FM-7 computers in 1986 and ported to MS-DOS by Brøderbund. An early RPG-shooter hybrid, it was one of the first computer games with polygonal 3D environments, along with full 360-degree third-person exploration for indoor environments.
Also known as Salamander, Life Force is a spin-off of the 1985 shoot-'em-up Gradius featuring two-player multiplayer and both side-scrolling and vertical-scrolling stages.
Silpheed is a 1986 vertically scrolling shoot 'em up featuring 3D flat-shaded polygon graphics. Successive ports featured improved graphics but retained the same core gameplay. The Sega CD version in particular used pre-rendered FMV as backgrounds.

A space shooter for the Vectrex released in 1982 and loosely based on the famous film. Players had to find and destroy all enemy ships in a sector (either Romulans or Klingons) in order to advance to the next one. Shields and firepower were limited, although they could be restocked when docking at a starbase. Players also faced a Klingon Mothership that fired both Romulan and Klingon weapons.

It featured early 3-D effects, such as sprite scaling and a motion cabinet where the screen mobilizes as the player aims a centred crosshair and lasers shoot into the screen. Five bases need to be defended and can be commanded to fire shots, and an energy shield is available for protection.
An early vertical scrolling shooter released by SNK in 1979. It was also an early example of an action game that gave the player a supply of energy that depletes as the player gets hit.
Space Launcher is a 1979 arcade game developed and published by Nintendo. Its gameplay appears to be a cross between Space Invaders and Frogger, except it came out nearly two years before Frogger.
