An action game that goes from Hong Kong to Hell, Fear Effect takes you to a dark world where killing people and monsters that get in your way becomes part of the job as you and two other mercenaries search for a missing girl. . It is notable for being the first game to use cel-shaded graphics.
Fear Effect was a third person action game developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment; a US based developer and it was published by Eidos on January 31, 2000 in North America. Set in a cyberpunk ambience it featured three mercenaries on a search for a missing girl. It was one of the first titles to incorporate a visual look akin to Cell Shading technology and it also introduced FMV driven real time environments.
The story revolves around three protagonists, Deke Decourt, Hana Tsu Vachel, and Royal Glas as they combine their abilities and mercenary talents in a single objective which is to investigate and track down a missing daughter of a wealthy and powerful boss of a Hong Kong Triad. Throughout the search they begin to realize that this missing daughter’s disappearance has gotten into a tumultuous mix up of Chinese mythology, the supernatural and ultimately hell.
Much like most traditional survival horror games of the past that used the third person view, tank controls remained the basic element for character movement, but in Fear Effect’s case you weren’t limited to simple standing and aiming. The player was given the option of running and shooting all at once. Characters weren’t tied down by a simple walk, run or shoot mechanic either. The option to roll and duck while facing more then one enemy was the norm. Your standard logic puzzles were included such as disarming a particular bomb in a given amount of time or redirecting power through a fuse box.
