I've developed a script which will post a tweet to recognise the anniversary of a game's release. It's currently running automatically four times a day though I may reduce the frequency if I am able to spend more time working on it to tweak the logic of what to retrieve. Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.
You can find it here: https://twitter.com/GamingBirthdays
Things I'd like to do:
- Pull back other screenshots related to the game and post them too.
- Regionalise the release date and not use the Original Release Date.
- Randomise the string template of each tweet
- Some sort of game quality filter - this I am in two minds about but I doubt few want to see a tweet about the anniversary of Rugrats: The Scavenger Hunt on N64, on the otherhand it is cool to see games you may never have heard of.
- Prevent the same game being posted more than once per day - this has not yet happened but theoretically possible.
I've been wanting to mess around with the API for a while, but I managed to code this up in a weekend so I am happy with what I have achieved so far!
Updates:
02/08 - A file register has been implemented to prevent dupe games appearing. A new tweet style has also been created. Currently awaiting for my EC2 instance to be whitelisted which I think is the reason tweets have stopped in the past few days.
09/07 - Only games with at least one user review are tweeted out. Will assess during the week how this goes with regards to repeats but it should increase the quality of games posted.
06/07 - Main image is now not always used. Instead a random screenshot is selected from the game page.
