What was your favorite games in 05? these are mine.
10 years ago in gaming was pretty damn great.
Indigo Prophecy clearly.
Resident Evil 4, Dragon Quest VIII, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus.
RE4 is the best "shooter" of all time as well as the best survival horror game, clocks in at 4th or so on the all time list.
DQVIII is easily the best Dragon Quest game and just a superb JRPG overall, Ragazzo.
God of War is a really good game outclassed by God of War 2.
Shadow of the Colossus is overrated! But still one of the best games ever made.
2005 was an alright year. Not my favorite by any means, but pretty solid as a whole.
F.E.A.R., Guild Wars, I'm OK: A Murder Simulator, Act of War: Direct Action and Geometry Wars are probably the games I've gone back to the most from that year.
But, hey, I enjoyed Project Snowblind, Star Wars: Republic Commando, Nexuiz and Cold Winter as well. A pretty decent year for FPS games.
Hm, for me, 2005 was kind of the dark ages. 2004 was a huge milestone for games and 2007 had a bunch of incredible games, but the years between were were a little flat, at least in my mind.
You list RE4 and I dont think I could think of many games in general that are better than it.
one of the greatest games of all time
even with the escort missions it has. so thats saying something
2005 was an excellent year for games, certainly above average. RE4 was easily my favorite of the year, but there were tons of other outstanding games that were very much worth playing. My highlights:
- Resident Evil 4
- Killer7
- F.E.A.R.
- Psychonauts
- SWAT 4
- Perfect Dark Zero
- Timesplitters: Future Perfect
- Metal Gear Acid
- Zelda: The Minish Cap
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Guitar Hero
And here are just some of the other great games from 2005:
- God of War
- Mario Kart DS
- Lumines
- Meteos
- Guild Wars
- Civilization IV
- Ninja Gaiden Black
- The Warriors
- Amped 3
- Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
- Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
- Kirby: Canvas Curse
- Advance Wars: Dual Strike
- Forza Motorsport
- Dragon Quest VIII
- Devil May Cry 3
- Battlefield 2
Guild wars ate my life, and that came out in 2005 i'm pretty sure. Digital Devil Saga, Jade Empire, Kotor 2, DMC3, God of War, Battlefield motherfucking 2, Dungeon Siege 2, SC: Chaos Theory, Advance Wars: DS, Farenheit, Ninja Gaiden Black, MK: Shaolin Monks, FE: Path of Radiance, CoD2, RE4, Battlefront 2, Fuckin Guitar Hero. Not to mention the xbox 360 came out that year, surviving for the next 10~ years for me. It might not count but I'm pretty sure that's when I started playing World of Warcraft too, which also ate my life.
Holy shit that was a good year. Ridiculous.
2005 was okay. No 2004, but still a good year. I was still very much a Nintendo loyalist in 2005... but I was also under 17, so I didn't actually play RE 4 until a year or two later when I got it from the shady-ass media pawn shop that didn't bother checking IDs. Still one of the greatest games ever made. Also, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance came out that year and that's one of the best games in the series.
Other games from 2005 I think are pretty good:
- Advance Wars: Dual Strike
- Heroes of Might and Magic V (admittedly, it didn't become great until its second expansion, which came out in 2007)
- Devil May Cry 3
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
- Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
FEAR's AI is still really, really good (I played it for the first time last year, so no nostalgia here). I know it's mainly an illusion made by really solid pathing code, but it's a good illusion nonetheless.
Including RE4 on that list is just unfair to all the other games.
Killer7 also came in 2005, christ that really was a great year wasn't it?
- Advance Wars: Dual Strike
- Armored Core: Nine Breaker
- Civilization IV
- DMC3
- Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
- God of War
- Guitar Hero
- Jade Empire
- Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
- Minish Cap
- RE4
- Soul Calibur III
- Wario Ware: Touched!
Wow, 2005 was pretty awesome
Not really for me. A bunch of games from 2005 didn't come out in the UK until 2006. I played a ton of Ratchet Gladiator/Deadlocked that year. I'm so glad there's not the huge delay from back then.

Yeah, I think there were some really good new IP's in 2005, but pretty much all the sequels released that year were mildly disappointing, with the possible exception of RE4, which I can't say I'm all that fond of personally, but which at least people remember today, unlike stuff like Civilization 4.
@fisk0: Civ 4 is immensely better than Civ 5 at least.
@fisk0: Civ 4 is immensely better than Civ 5 at least.
Well, yeah, but it ain't no Civ 3, or even Call to Power! It just did very little to change things up or improve stuff, making it kinda forgettable.
God, the first parts of Indigo Prophecy were so good. It really went off the rails towards the end though
Been playing RE4 as we speak. In my top 5 games ever still. Holds up amazingly well. Chaos Theory, DMC 3 are games that I still play to this day.
@captainpeach: "The time I was born was the best year in gaming!"
My gaming memories of 2005 are vague at best. Forgot that Mercs 1 came out that year and the first DMC I played was 3 Special Edition, so my favorite games from that are either came out in 04 or 06, mainly Burnout 3, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal and Kingdom Hearts 2.
The real question is, what was the year for gaming that 1987 was for hot action films? 2007?
The years I've seen cited most often as "THE year" are 94, 97, 98, and 07.
*edit: Between 97 and 98, you've got FF7, Symphony of the Night, Starcraft, Metal Gear Solid, Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Red/Blue, Star Fox 64, Half Life, and a whole lot more. It was a really, really good 24 month period for games.
*edit 2: Added in 2007
I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure that in 2005 I wasn't actually playing many (if any) games that were released that year. I started playing World of Warcraft later in the year although that came out the year before, and while I did play a lot of Guitar Hero that wasn't until 2006 when a friend introduced me to it - at the time I was mostly playing older games (like C&C games and Vice City). Only in the last 7-8 years did I really start picking up games when they launched.
@bbalpert: 2004 was one of the huge years, its up there with 98 and such.
GTA San Andreas, Halo 2, Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, Metal Gear Solid 3, Burnout 3 (BEST BURNOUT!), Fable, Katamari, Chronicles of Riddick, Ninja Gaiden, Unreal, Cave Story, Killzone, Lumines, Monster Hunter etc
I don't even remember what I was playing back in 2005. I wasn't really into new releases at the time. I'm pretty sure I was a Gamecube person back then. (Still am, for the record. That system is awesome)
It was not really a great year for me.
There are some good titles (Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, God of War, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse and Dragon Quest VIII), but I don't think it was that great in terms of quantity.
It beats last year, though...
These were the main games I remember from that year.
- Gran Turismo 4 (the first realistic racing game I really got in to. I had GT3 but didn't play it that much. After this, I switched to Forza, though)
- Timesplitters Future Perfect (one of my favorite FPSs, the first I played online, too)
- God of War (2 improved on it in every way, but the first was still a memorable experience)
- Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition (one of my favorite racing games. I played this so much, including the online, which was amazing)
- Civilization IV (Civ is one of my favorite series ever. My dad and I got a 6600GT for our computer so I could play without the nightmare faces and black terrain. My first time upgrading a computer.)
Other great games that didn't have quite the same impact:
- Project Snowblind (I should replay this. I remember it being a FPS with some Deus Ex-like abilities. One of the guys should play this on UPF sometime. It's an underrated game)
- Burnout Revenge (not as great as Burnout 3, but still great)
- Star Fox Assault (hey, I enjoyed it)
- Ratchet: Deadlocked (didn't have the magic of the earlier games, but I was still happy to have more Ratchet)
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (I'd have put this up above since I love the PW games, but I don't think I actually played it in 05. It was probably a year or two later)
Although not quite perfectly 10 years ago, I found a copy of Sonic Riders buried in my closet last night. Sat there for a while thinking about how even 9 years ago I should have known better.
As far as 05 specifically, San Andreas is probably what I dumped the most time into. I love flying in that game, not really sure why. I wouldn't crash the plane into things for kicks that much, just cruised around soaking in those hot PS2 graphics.
I didn't come to Dragon Quest VIII until much later, maybe 2008 while I was working night shift in grocery stock, but lord that's one fine JRPG. Probably the last big one I enjoyed.
Resident Evil 4 was a game that someone basically begged me to buy on launch day. They swore up and down that it was going to be amazing and change my life, but I kept thinking about what I knew about Resident Evil and just thinking that the series was good, but they were all short little horror games that were kind of becoming a little dated.
And you know, goddammit, it did. That game was fucking great!
@fisk0: Civ 4 is immensely better than Civ 5 at least.
It's pretty good now though. I mean, you could play it a bit. For a thousand hours.
I just started DQVIII about... two months ago, so I'll get back to y'all about how that game is at a later date.
Shadow of the Colossus, Resident Evil 4, San Andreas, Civ IV and Ninja Gaiden Black are all games I have fond memories of. Jade Empire and some others I've played but I don't have much reverence for them.
Everything 10 years ago was great, because I had less stuff to worry about. There are just as many if not more great games each year. I just have less time, I've become jaded, and I've learned too much about game development to go into anything blind and amazed anymore. Games are still great, but I'm too busy to look backwards or forwards. I just play what I can right now and don't worry about the rest. Most games I buy are good.
