Amano or Nomura
You could show the characters he designed from the games he designed them for. He may not have been the sprite artist but he was the designer for 1-6 and then the designer again for 9.

I presume you mean which FF dude do we like the most? It's all the same belts and zippers. "How do you have a NES Red Mage icon and not know the difference? "
Here's the only question one needs ask in this debate. Which one of these men designed the black mage? Case closed...

I think nomura is technically the better artist, the other guy is more abstract, yet ppl finds his work appealing. You not posting nomura's more recent work, which I think is excellent like FFX, FFX-2 and FFXIII.
" @tranquilchaos said:That and honestly a lot of his characters don't have either of those things going on, however the ones that do, do it hardcore. I kinda like it though, Lulu's Dress was sweet." Nomura is obsessed with useless straps and belts. It bothers me. "Why? It's a benign design choice, one that even Square Enix has poked fun at on occasion. "
" @Zenaxzd said:I see, that is pretty ridiculous... Like why is it all shifted to the right side of his body too. Neither. Akihiko Yoshida wins. Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, FFXII (not so much, it's like they asked him to copy the others a bit), etc.
People into MMOs should be glad he's involved in FFXIV, looking at awful Nomura and Amano designs, for the duration of a MMO = torture.
I like Amano's style more. There's a more pronounced 'fantasy' vibe from it's old fashioned style compared to Nomura's anime style. It is Final "Fantasy"
I prefer Nomura, though I admit his design quirks can get... pretty ridiculous. He very much epitomizes the cardinal sin of Japanese design aesthetic: over-ornamentation. But still, the man clearly has both talent and imagination, and even if his designs grate sometimes, they are undeniably interesting.
His FFVIII designs are my personal favorite, since it precedes the madness that took hold of him during FFX. And he seems, with Versus at least, to be getting back to the simplicity and unity of style that drew me to him in the first place.
Alternately, Amano's stuff has this weird china-doll-possessed-by-the-Devil feel that really freaks me out. Chalk this up to my introduction into the series at VIII, or else to the proliferation of anime-inspired design, I don't know
I would say both really, Amano's art is legendary but not easily conveyed in Video games which is one of the reasons they chose Nomura for the subsequent Final Fantasy's, But i think Video Games are at a level where Amano's art could be fully realised now and i would love to see a FF with him as lead.
Amano for sure. While I appreciate Nomura's more mainstream approach, I always thought Amano as a better artist overall. At least that's my opinion.
Here's some great artwork. It's always great seeing how he envisioned how the earlier Final Fantasy's would look beyond the sprites.
